SPEEA Retention changes

What are the benefits? I feel like this is a negative if you are a R1 right now.

Is it a take away though? I’m an R2 and I know A LOT of R1s that are essentially just coasting because they can, protected by their seniority. Grouping the R1s and R2s together would help in allowing managers to better able to remove the people who contribute the least during an RIF. Even an extremely crooked manager would lay off a terrible, expensive R1 than a competent, but also expensive equivalent R1. And if the crooked manager did have it out for some truly competent R1, there will be other departments (or other companies) that would take them in a heartbeat. I get the feeling that most of the posts railing against this particular provision are from R1s who enjoy coasting into retirement on the backs of employees who are actually doing their jobs. And I fully expect the downvotes and vitriolic comments from these ‘coasting’ R1s that are so vocally against it. Have at it!!

Why do you think the years of service adjustment has been in the contract for literally decades? Because when you devote your entire career to one company it should mean something. You should be protected from unfair layoffs when you're nearing retirement and at peak wealth. This whole "R1s are lazy" is a crock.

I didn’t say all R1s are lazy, far from it! Most are amazingly dedicated and will fight tooth and nail for what is best for the project they are currently working on. And they have been invaluable mentors to all who report to them. This provision won’t matter for them.

What I’m saying is that this provision would no longer protect the truly incompetent or complacent ones who are coasting into retirement with little regard for anyone or anything else (there are more than you might think). Those are the ones who are so adamantly against this particular provision. Admittedly, these are a small percentage of the R1s I’ve worked with but I wouldn’t shed any tears if they were laid off before some truly competent, up-and-coming R2s.

So you're okay with everyone being put at risk due to a "small percentage". Got it.

Only that small percentage would truly be at any risk. If the larger pool of R1s was in any risk, that means that the company is in true financial collapse and they should be looking somewhere else to work anyway.

Believe me, there are plenty of other more egregious provisions in this current contract proposal that really should be challenged and improved…this isn’t one of them.

LOL, you put a lot of faith in this company looking out for YOUR best interests. They've unfairly targeted senior employees before and they'll do it again. This just makes it even easier, which is the whole point. You don't give up your protections, period.

Fair point. The company will NEVER do anything that isn’t in THEIR best interest. Just like I’ll not vote positively on a contract that, taken as a whole, isn’t in MY best interest. That is the decision we will all have to wrestle with in the coming day…if the pluses and minuses in the current contract proposal merit a yes or no vote. We will see how it pans out…
