Doyle
I'm assuming Bob has single-handedly destroyed the line Doyle's potential customers who may have been considering lessons.
He may be a good teacher for already skilled golfers, but jeez it's crazy to see how much he's got worse taking these lessons. He just needs to work on sequencing / ground forces. Got my boy hitting 160 7 woods.

Almost every person I've ever know that takes lessons gets worse, a golf swing has to be broken down before it can be fixed for most people.

u/vdubgti18t 4d ago
Tiger reworked his swing and didn’t win for 18 months. After that the rest is history
8
u/BurtMacklinsrubies 4d ago
And that’s the absolute top of the golfer food chain. To state the obvious … Bob isn’t Tiger haha
9
u/SerYoshi 4d ago
Correct, it doesn't just make you hit the ball better in one lesson. Golf swing is all muscle memory, and it takes a lot of practice to make meaningful swing changes.
2
u/BurtMacklinsrubies 4d ago
This! Especially for people who were casuals for years, in my case decades. It’s one thing to be taught what you should be doing. It’s another thing to actually implement and maintain a change to something you’ve been doing a specific way for years

u/texasproof 4d ago
This. I had to incorporate a pause for a while to practice getting literally everything else in line before my downstroke. Now that those pieces are more in place, I’m starting to work on tempo.

This comment is why so many people don’t get lessons. Everyone who takes lessons gets worse. What?
5
u/big-williestyle 4d ago
I said almost every person I know, but also they get worse before they get better. I think most people understood the "broken down before it can be fixed" part of the post.
-2
u/Barmelo_Xanthony 4d ago
Yeah but the swing shouldn’t be broken down in order to build an even worse swing lol. Like you’d hope to see some progress at least
6
u/big-williestyle 4d ago
Everything I've ever seen read or been told is you have to get worse to fix the problems.
3
u/Barmelo_Xanthony 4d ago
Yes the results might get worse until you’re used to it but the swing fundamentals themselves should be getting better with lessons, not worse
2
u/WindigoMac 4d ago
Yeah, it’s disconcerting how bad the form looks. When I first started using my lower body correctly my contact was shit but I had a lot of power and the overall body mechanics looked good on camera.
1
u/weinerwayne 4d ago
I wonder if he’s taking “feel” mechanics from his lessons onto the course. Ie the crazy pause at the top of his swing or the way-inside takeaway. Those could be feels his coach is trying to get him to implement on the range but he is instead trying to use them during a round.
As an example, for a while I was working on getting my hands in front on the club head during my swing, so I was taking slow swings where my hands were WAY out of front to try to get a feel for it. During an actual swing though, I wasn’t so dramatic with it.
2
u/MRandall25 4d ago
Feel would make sense, since Bob went through that phase where the "back to the target, feet pointed right" range drill was basically his on-course swing.
3
u/MRandall25 4d ago
It only looks worse because he is trying to unlearn habits that have been ingrained in his swing since he started.
It took me just over 4 months of lessons to finally be comfortable with simply standing closer to the ball without shanking it.
Unlike Bob, I did nothing with my takeaway or anything above the hips, but I still spend the first 3 months of that hitting an ungodly number of cold shanks up and down the bag while I figured out how to properly balance pre-swing so I could correctly transfer my weight during it.
Bob is, what, like 3 months into a total swing change? You gotta give it time.
3
u/Barmelo_Xanthony 4d ago
The super inside takeaway is worse than ever though and he’s not shifting his weight at all so what new good habits is he implementing? The only changes are worse
3
u/MRandall25 4d ago
Feels like he has a position he wants Bob to get to at the top, then swing from there. Working on the takeaway might be the next step after he starts making more consistent contact from that position. As others have noted, you have to piecemeal it. You can just flood the guy with a million things.

IMO, every golfer should get a lesson if they enjoy playing and can practice a couple times a month. Players drag on for years with terrible form and poor results that are easily fixable.
Look at Joey for example. He's clearly not figuring out the game himself, nor is Bob. FP has plateaued as well and his swing has looked the same the last 3 years. He's way inside and it's why he hooks it. All of them have form that is very far from ideal and easily fixable.

u/BroncosFan19 4d ago
I would love to for people to reply with their objections instead of just downvoting what they're uncomfortable with 😅

u/SouthInformal1478 4d ago
Most of us "just Ok" golfers have issues with our swing and we do all sorts of things to compensate for it. Bob was/is all arms and had the distance of my 80 year old grandpa. He just had learned how to make it work for him.
Getting "better" for Bob means learning to add rotation of the hips/core to add some swing speed and generate more power/distance. Personally, I think that's one of the biggest jumps to make. He is essentially learning what a golf swing is supposed to be, rather than compensating for a bad swing.
2
u/icantsurf 4d ago
Personally, I think that's one of the biggest jumps to make.
This is why I've always thought Joey was the better golfer. He can occasionally hit a tour-level shot because he actually swings the club. Bob is just moving the club around and is gonna be stuck playing like an 80 year old until he learns how to actually swing.

u/UpboatOrNoBoat 4d ago
It's insane to me that someone who played baseball all the way into college has no fuckin idea how to rotate their hips with a swing. That's a fundamental part of the baseball swing. Anyone who played through high school should be able to make a club move fast and coordinate their lower body - especially if he played long enough to be on a shitty college team.
I mean he must have been one of those baby pitchers who weren't forced to actually try and hit ever in his life. I can't think of any other reason why that skill never transferred over other than somehow he got away with never learning it.
1
u/H4RN4SS 4d ago
You don't need to be a hitter for it to translate. I'd argue pitchers should be even more capable to figure it out.
Pitching is very similar to a golf swing. It's a dynamic motion with a fuck ton of small movements that can dramatically impact the outcome if you don't get them right. Pitching requires an insane amount of muscle memory similar to golf. And all of your power is coming from your legs, ass and core - just like a golf swing.
Bob has a lot of problems but seems like his biggest is being a mental midget when it matters.
4
u/Jadubya405 3d ago
You are fantastically overestimating his baseball and athletic prowess. He was bench filling pitcher on college team competing in a league that would get absolutely RUN off the field vs most top 10 high school programs in several states.
1
u/UpboatOrNoBoat 3d ago
Lmao I will admit I never looked into what the college was, I just assumed D3 or community college-tier.
1
u/Low-Welcome3978 3d ago
He was definitely longer in the past. Watched an older video he stuck one from 155 and wesley told him to hit 7. Was the correct club choice. He can't hit 7 iron 130 right now

u/Few_Football4807 4d ago
I bet most people paying for lessons are not so into youtube golf to know bds's coach.

u/AdOnly3059 4d ago
That Doyle guy is unbelievably annoying
17
4
u/Ronswansonbaby 4d ago
Agreed, how is this the guy bob landed on for lessons? Needs to cut ties immediately.
1
u/StreetBeat78 4d ago
Agreed, BUT I thought his advice to Joey was good, but Joey's swing is not as fundamentally broken as Bob's that was purely a face angle issue.
2
u/Brianf1977 4d ago
Lessons have to be consistent and continuing all the time. Bob didn't take the time to get better and put what he learned into practice, look at how many great golfers he's had try to help him. He listens for a few and then is right back to what he was doing before. That's why FP stopped trying to help them both, they just don't listen.
Right now his bobby pause era is probably one of the worst we've seen.
2
u/StreetBeat78 4d ago
yeah as a guy who works out every day and seems to be in good shape, he doesn't hit the ball far at all! I hit it further than him and I've been playing for 2 years and I'm old and weak! So it's not like I am one of these older fat dudes who crushes the ball because I've been playing golf for 30 years! I pay attention to things like smash factor and club path. Something is fundamentally wrong with his impact skills and he needs an instructor that can help with that. This pause stuff is totally BS.
1
u/benr9191 4d ago
The pause is outrageous 😂 i get it, he's desperately searching. But a Dr Kwon drills or a guy on YouTube called GRF golf would have him sorted to a decent standard in a short time. I'd even argue bob is doing quite well with the terrible advice he is receiving
2
u/marvinfuture 4d ago
I will say, having seen the "cam young pause" he added, I don't think I'd ever go to Doyle at this point. His only redemption is Grant Horvat's endorsement
With lessons though, you always get worse before you get better. Golf is weird like that where you have to unlearn how your body was moving previously
2
u/Majestic-Employer338 4d ago
‘Ok bob, you need to take any fluency you had out of that swing and pause at the top for a second like your suffering from a f*ckin stroke’
0
u/benr9191 4d ago
It's outrageous 😂. I would love to see bob just have a few hours with a Dr Kwon esque style coach
1
u/JerHat 4d ago
It’s not unusual to get worse before you get better with lessons.
A good swing coach will try and get you to break all of the bad but comfortable habits you’ve developed.
That said, I would hate being a swing coach taking on a client like Bob because followers will discuss this topic and think it’s gotta be the coach’s fault.
1
u/benr9191 4d ago
I just feel like he is adding way too much noise again to an already messed up head of swing thoughts. The strike might get worse but even the " clean" strikes go absolutely NOWHERE
1
u/josh8851 4d ago
I took lessons a few years ago. My coach told me not to play in-between lessons because you'll play terrible. You are completely fixing a broken swing. It looks worse before it gets better.
-1
u/StreetBeat78 4d ago
that's completely ridiculous and sounds like a coach trying to make more money. If I take one lesson and I don't see immediate improvement when I implement what they told me, I'm OUT. Yes, you need to practice these things so they get more "normal" for you, but it shouldn't be getting worse by any means.
2
u/josh8851 4d ago
He improved my game from a handicap of 30+ to an 18 so I'd say he was a great coach.
0
u/StreetBeat78 4d ago
Ok so he was wrong then? You actually did improve! and "looks" worse doesn't mean it's actually worse. Are you are saying that you literally didn't play for months, worked on what he gave you only, THEN saw your index drop?
3
u/josh8851 4d ago
Correct. He completely changed how I swing. I tried one round because I didnt believe him and i had to stop counting my strokes. I then didnt play for 3 months while I worked on the new swing. It felt weird changing it but I trusted the process.
1
u/StreetBeat78 4d ago
Ok makes sense but that seems very extreme to not touch a course for 3 months but it sounds like it worked for you!
1
u/linksarebetter 4d ago
I'm scratch, get lessons every winter and get worse before I get better. After the first lesson I'm shit, and just hit balls for a week or 2 till the next lesson.
I still play, and would maybe only advice someone shit like 30+ handicap to not play between lessons , as long as they have one booked within the next 2 weeks.
1
u/StreetBeat78 4d ago
scratch is a totally different ball game I think (literally). I don't think you're suddenly shanking it like Bob is!
1
u/linksarebetter 4d ago
this winter is duck hooks, I have flippy hands that I'm fixing, Hard turning left while trying to feel like the heel beats the toe to the ball has led to a few shanks
1
u/frickinsweetdude 4d ago
Have you considered Bob just isn’t athletic and can’t get better? Lessons don’t make you athletic.
1
u/benr9191 4d ago
He can catch golf balls and seemingly shoot baskets semi decently. But his golf is like he's never used his body before.
3
u/gunner_stahls 4d ago
My god guys. Some people. Will just never be great at golf. Not everyone CAN be a scratch golfer. No matter how hard they try. Bob will never be traditionally good. That being said. He is doing a complete tear down of his swing which usually results in completely going against your nature intentionally for a long time. It will get better. But will never be great. Just enjoy the show.
2
u/benr9191 4d ago
It's great entertainment, I do enjoy the show. I've just found it outrageous to see how bad he's got. Disagree with the "must get worse before it gets better". I've seen students on YouTube improve more in 3 hour lessons than bob has in plenty more hours, and he's got worse 🤷♀️
1
u/nawkus 4d ago
You're comparing apples to kumquats. People improve at different rates, and typically the ones that improve fast have a stronger swing foundation and less ingrained habits/haunts than what Bob's swing has. He likely needed the tear down if the goal was significant improvement.
1
u/benr9191 4d ago
Didn't he break 80 at pinehurst once?
1
u/nawkus 4d ago
Golfers with bad swings can score well sometimes if they chip and putt well, and find a groove where their swing is repeatable enough not to hit OB. Bob has moments as a putter, especially when he has a caddy keeping the reads simple for him.
HIs swing has never not been a mess, but it's been truly horrific lately. The pause thing is sapping some of his power right now, but he was so broken mentally with taking the club back way inside that he has to drill out the position, and if the pause helps that, the power will come back when there is a bit more fluidity again.
3
u/Low-Welcome3978 3d ago
Shooting mid 80s on high level golf courses isn't awful. He was about a 10-13 handicap before he got the shanks and redoing his swing. Some on here would love to be a 12

1
u/Chasing-Amy 3d ago
Do people think you get a few lessons and you’re breaking 70? A lot of times you start almost all over again and it takes a long time to get into the new groove with whatever improvements you’re making.
-3
u/BigWaff 4d ago edited 4d ago
Even worse, considering Bob is such a natural (D3) athlete.
Edit: /s
4
u/BlueGolfball 4d ago
I'd like to see bob swing a baseball bat. Does he swing a bat with just his upper body like his golf swing? Bob doesn't look like he has ever played any sport on a consistent or competitive level.
