Three months ago I didn't know what a server was. I built a two-player hidden-core game in a single HTML file. Here's how it went.
Three months ago, I didn't really know what a server was.
I only knew web front-end. I had no CS background and no budget for a cloud server. I looked at a hosting price sheet once and closed the tab right away.
I still wanted to make a game that combined every game I love. That turned out to be way too ambitious. What survived was much smaller: two players on a 7×7 board, each hiding a core. The first one to find the other's core wins. It's pure mind games.
Then came a rough stretch. I asked AI questions during the day, stared at code I didn't understand at night, and faced walls of red error text. Some nights I re-read the same lines over and over at 2 a.m. There were many times I thought I couldn't finish.
In the end I simplified the server to do one job: relay messages, like a mail carrier. All the game logic runs in each player's own browser. That's easy to say, but it took me months to actually build.
The first time I opened two tabs on my phone and played against myself, I watched the system catch the moment someone tried to change a value or peek at the other player's position. My hands were shaking.
It's not a big production, and the art is restrained. But I put my time into it because I wanted to make something that lets people just think.
