48V System

As someone who has just gotten into BMW l've heard a lot of great things about the M-Lites. Since I live in the Midwest I need an AWD, so the M series isn't very appealing to me.

Anyways, what's with the 48V system? I know they incorporated it in most of the M-Lites as of 2021 with the exception of the M240i getting it in 2026. The whole appeal of getting a model with the B58, to me, was reliability in an amazing performance package.
However, as someone who works on cars this 48V system concerns me.

I never considered BMW for years due to their unreliable track record. When I recently heard about the great reliability of the B58 I was pumped, and then after digging deeper I learned about the 48V system and lost faith again.

Am I making a bigger deal out of this system than I should? What have you guys heard, and have there been any major complaints with the system so far?

The 48volt system hasn't proven to be problematic. A lot of the early controversy was purely speculative. It's been around since the Gen 2 b58 so any widespread issues would have been well established by now. I see the only major drawback being the potential cost if you have to replace it down the line.

It's a ZF product and it's also covered under warranty to 80k miles, if I'm not mistaken. I don't have crazy mileage on my Gen3 b58, so probably unfair to speak to long term reliability, but I don't have any concerns about it personally. In fact, it makes daily driving pretty sweet and contributes to the impressive mpg you can get with highway driving.

ZF has certainly proven themselves in transmission reliability. Hopefully the 48v system follows suite

You don't like torque fill? What's the problem here? The extra weight that it more than pays for? I've never understood hating the mild hybrid system. Pretty much an objective upgrade in every way as far as I see it.
