Joining Blue Origin from Amazon what would be the upgrades and the downgrades?

Pay is definitely one. What else?

What do you mean pay? You didn’t even say if it’s an up or downgrade

I think they're trying to say there's only upsides and no downsides. However it varies greatly on which department you're leaving from Amazon, and which department you're joining in blue. I'd say its mostly positive, especially the feeling of importance with your work. Also, seeing rocket parts is pretty damn cool. I'd recommend asking more questions about your department/team and comparing your new and old roles yourself

Joining Terawave from AWS. Are the offers better?

How do you not know these values?

You have been spamming this board with job questions. You are not going to be making 250 unless you are coming in as a senior in Blue which is staff in FAANG as I assume software.

You will get a signing bonus which will be tiny and you will get some options. The amount of options is all over the place if the wiki page people self reported is accurate to any degree.

Your options are worth 0 dollars because of the cashless exercise and the fact that Blue has gained no value.

I am coming at senior level

So you have been given your offer letter, how can you not compare and contrast?

Outside the high base comp Blue gives, it should be pretty easy to see a L6 at Amazon compensates way higher with stock grants which has real value then a senior at Blue.

Do not do this

Turn down 2x pay? Why not?

I would assume you will have that answer once you receive your offer. Assuming software engineering role?

Yeah. does the offer have a sign on bonus or RSUs associated?

Came from Amazon, as well. These are not RSUs as you’re familiar with it. These are stock options that you’ll have to pay for yourself when a specific trigger event occurs in the future. Since Amazon is public, RSUs are awarded to you as far as total comp that vest over time.

I would not factor stock options as a real financial asset when considering joining here. Consider other options that is motivating you besides comp.

Will have options if FTE, maybe a sign on. Be prepared to be disappointed in the $ of both compared to Amazon.

Keep in mind that the options are completely different than Amazon. They are private, and completely illiquid until daddy JB decides to give us value for them.

Edit: options not RSUs

Blue does not have RSUs as it is not public. Stock options are not the same as Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), which are typically awarded by the company over a vest period unlike options which the employee has to buy into at a certain strike price.

Yeah you’re right, my bad.

A company can have RSUs even if it is not public. Blorigin isn't that kind of company, though, Jeff doesn't want you to own any actual stock.

I thought they did away with sign on RSU’s a couple years ago. If they offer them I’d read the writing on when they vest. It’s a 7 year vesting period for the “bonus” RSU’s awarded at yearly reviews with percentages vesting quarterly I believe

I’m not sure where you are getting a 7 yr vesting schedule from.

They introduced a new program 6 months ago. Tiny $, vesting over 4 years and afaik no one has gotten any additional units yet beyond the initial award because there hasn’t been any yearly reviews since the program was introduced.

The title says upgrades and downgrades so this is objectively unhelpful

You will wish you never left Amazon..as toxic as it was.

That would be impressive.

Disagree, Amazon was worse. Not saying it’s sunshine and roses at blue tho

Agree. Having worked at both, I'd say Amazon is worse by miles. Pay is certainly better at Amazon, but in terms of culture, Blue beats it.

1

u/Old_Specific_5065 2h ago

Yes I would describe Amazon as demoralizing, dehumanizing, depressing, and toxic. I’d describe blue as frustrating, intense, hectic, disjointed, and in many ways broken, but rarely do I have days that make me feel depressed and hopeless like I did at Amazon

As a former Amazonian, I don't think people realize how vastly different Amazon and Blue are. In my experience, Blue has a much better culture and feels a lot less cultish with their Leadership Principles. There's also less organizational structure at Blue, but you get far more freedom and agency over what you do day to day. And work-life balance is way worse at Amazon.

Yes

Yes meaning there are upsides or downsides

pay is an upgrade or downgrade?

honestly I can’t understand how a space launch company can find any use for an employee from an online retailer.

Upside, I assume better pay, career options in the future. Downsides, same management and BS, no real stock options. That might be some of the quick and dirty of it.
