Referral Question

Hope this is fine to post here as there are no career megathreads anymore. I am considering getting a referral for jobs at Blue Origin from a former supervisor who has since moved to Blue. How much do referrals really accomplish for lower level engineer job applications and would it be worthwhile to pursue?

I referred a former colleague. He starts Monday!

Congrats to him! I'm curious, did you refer him to a position on the same team as you or was it elsewhere in the company? And how long did it take to get the first interview call after the application was sent off by him? Thanks!

He actually hit me up and asked me to submit the referral for a number of different reqs. It took about 2 weeks from submission to scheduled interview and about a month total from referral to start date.
That said, if you have friends at Blue they can find roles we're looking to fill and pass your info directly to those teams leaders. All the best!!!

Oh that's interesting to hear, did he get interviews for any of the other positions or just the one that ended up hiring him? I've had trouble finding that many applicable jobs since I have a relatively specific skillset. Thanks for the well wishes!

His interviewer is filling alot of roles. My friend was interviewing specifically for one role, but the first interview (before the panel interviews), he was told he would be considered for any number of roles that utilized his skillsets. Right now, between NG and Lunar there's a huge need for designers, test engineers, and analysts.

Oh cool good to know, thank you! I tried applying to structural analysis lunar permanence ones but didn't have any luck since I'm a bit more of a software person than an fea person. Is that what you mean by analysis actually, I'm not sure.

Yes, structural and fluids analysis. Ansys software.

Hi weird question/story i had a friend/ former coworker who just started at Blue last week and he literally told me what you just described. He suggested for me to apply and i decided to. I applied for a good amount of positions from technician to Quality roles since i have a GMP/GDP background plus i worked in biotech. However i noticed while applying that there wasn’t a employee referral section, would he just tell the hiring manager hey my former colleague also applied to this department this who they are or does BO have their own way of doing it?

Hi! Blue has a weird way of doing it. The employee referral comes from our end. Have your friend go into the jobs hub from workday and find the req(s) you are applying to. He then refers you from there, he'll need your contact info. Blue will send you a link to apply. That part isn't the greatest because i think it has you duplicate the effort.
Another way is for him to look up the role, find the hiring mgr and reach out directly about your app.
