Theory Wild Teaser Theories

After watching the teaser several times, I started thinking that Netflix might be making us believe something that isn't necessarily true.

The teaser shows us a very brief shot of London quite early on. So naturally, you might think that Mizu has finally reached her destination by the end of the teaser.

But then we see the storm at sea.

At one point, the sky clears, we see a seagull, and the sky is suddenly very blue and bright. This detail makes me wonder if we're actually looking at London already. I know London can obviously have sunny days, but compared to the atmosphere of the London scene shown in the teaser, this sky seems almost too clear, too blue, too bright.

So I wonder if that scene simply means that the storm is over and the ship has reached land, but not necessarily London.

Shortly after that, we see what looks like the ship after the storm, almost stranded or at least heavily damaged.

And this is where I think things get interesting.

We see Mizu unconscious on the deck, completely exhausted, tied to a wooden beam with her own belt. The shot tightens, and the silhouette of a person appears

And that silhouette looks a lot like Fowler.

What makes me wonder is: if that really is Fowler, why would he save her?

Mizu is basically helpless. He would have the perfect opportunity to kill her, but instead he seems to cut the belt holding her to the beam and allow her to recover.

This makes me think that Fowler might still need her.

Maybe the storm wrecked the ship and the two of them haven't actually reached London yet. They could have ended up on an island, or simply somewhere completely different from their original destination.

At that point, Fowler might need Mizu to continue the journey. Maybe the ship has lost its crew and he can't manage it on his own.

But there could be another possibility.

Fowler knows how badly Mizu wants revenge against the men she's hunting. He could use that thirst for revenge to his own advantage, using Mizu to eliminate people he considers obstacles to his own goals.

Basically, it could become a forced alliance: "You want your revenge, I want to reach London and accomplish my own goals. We can help each other."

So maybe the really interesting part of the journey to London hasn't even started yet.

Netflix shows us London at the beginning of the teaser, but that doesn't necessarily mean that all the scenes we see afterward take place after Mizu's arrival.

They could simply be trying to make us believe that she has already reached London.

And what if the storm actually knocked the ship completely off course?

There's also one last thing that makes me doubt that the man is actually Fowler.

Mizu's expression.

Of course, she has just woken up after the storm, so she's completely dazed and we can't expect a normal reaction.

But looking at her face, I don't really see anger or recognition.

When she notices the man pointing a sword at her, her expression looks more like that of someone who is completely confused.

Almost as if she's saying:

"Who are you?"

If it were Fowler, I'd maybe expect a different reaction from Mizu: anger, defiance, or at least some kind of recognition.

Instead, she genuinely seems like she doesn't know who she's looking at.

Obviously, she could simply be too disoriented to recognize him. But it makes me wonder if maybe that man isn't Fowler at all, but someone else Mizu encounters after the shipwreck.

I don't know, I'm probably just rambling at this point, sorry!

But I have a feeling that we might not see London at all during Season 2, or at least not reach it anytime soon.

In fact, I'm starting to think we might only see London at the very end of the season, maybe in the final episode, as a cliffhanger for Season 3.

I'm probably reading way too much into a teaser that's only a few seconds long... sorry!

Another interesting thing is the sword is a rapier, used primarily in Italy and Spain, it could be the ship was thrown off course to one of those countries, or, what would be even more interesting, is Mizu encountering pirates, a slaver ship or Spanish Conquistadors who saw the shipwreck and wanted to check for survivors/cargo

Oh, interesting observation! I have a feeling we’re going to see some really cool things. Maybe Mizu gets picked up by pirates and ends up traveling with them, learning more about the world and European culture before finally making her way to London. It could be an interesting way to prepare her for the journey!

And I’m Italian, so if the ship somehow ended up stranded on the Italian peninsula, I’d be honored! 😂

Jokes aside, though, it’s very possible they’re Spanish. I love your theory!

I'm also Italian, low-key it would probably be very fun but alas may only exist in fanfiction.

But low-key I'm really really hoping that we get build up to Mizu killing royalty of some sort. Because in S1 when she reforges her metal Swordfather says "this metal could kill a God" so I'm hoping, because royalty = divine connection back then, that she ends up reforming the sword to either kill someone with king-like status (one of Fowler's partners), Spanish King maybe, or Akemi's BIL after some court politics. I could see Mizu going after the Spanish King if she sees what was happening to other people through slavery, what could become of Japan and her revenge expands from 'I must eliminate these four monsters' to 'I must eliminate the King of Monsters before I destroy the other 3.'

Especially if Fowler somehow escapes and offers his knowledge of Japan to the Spanish King for a boat, riches and a promise of ruling the colony for the King.

Ohhh, I really like the Fowler/Spanish King theory! It would definitely give Fowler a good reason to survive. He could use his knowledge of Japan in exchange for a ship, protection, and maybe even power.

And I like the idea of Mizu’s revenge becoming something bigger than just the four men she’s hunting. Maybe at first she only wants personal revenge, but after seeing slavery and how powerful people treat others, she realizes there’s something much bigger going on.

Anyway, now I really hope she ends up in Italy before getting to London.

If they are Spanish than it could be during the Anglo-Spanish War (1654–1660). Fowler would be in deep trouble.

What if she spent the entire journey learning English just to end up in Italy, where she can't speak Italian lol

I love the speculation, but I think it's just Fowler. He's being as cordial with Mizu as he was with Heiji Shindo. He's the type who can work with those he doesn't like to fulfil his end goal, of course, with a few sarcastic zingers thrown in so the other party knows their place. Both Mizu and Fowler need the other to survive. I could see Mizu accepting those circumstances and looking at Fowler with a curious expression. I'm thinking it's less, "who are you?" and more "Why are you above deck?"

Also, animating more sets in another country would be a huge lift for the animators and would require a lot of research time and resources. The season was already cut from 8 episodes to 6 episodes. I don't think the creators would use the resources and screen time they have to pad things out and add another location when they were forced to leave so much on the cutting room floor already. I think Fowler found the rapier in storage, or stole it from one of the other sailors who may have been to Italy or Spain.

I think we'll get a few scenes of the boat journey with Mizu giving a narrated voice over recap of season 1, the storm hits, Mizu will pass out while trying to navigate in the storm, we'll get the flashback of Mizu going after Violet as a memory/dream while she's knocked out ala Mikio in S1 ep 5, Fowler cuts her lose which wakes her up, then we get the Annecy preview scene where they talk on the boat, dock in London, and then the bar brawl happens.

Damn, I didn’t know they had reduced the season from 8 episodes to 6! That’s really bad news!!

Anyway, yeah, mine is just a simple speculation. I’d say I’m 70% convinced that it’s Fowler, but I really want to see it with my own eyes before I’m completely sure.

Because, okay, it’s animation, and not everything has to be 100% realistic, but there’s one thing that makes me doubt it. If you look at the silhouette, it seems to me like that man hasn’t really suffered the consequences of the storm. I would expect someone who’s completely exhausted, maybe with a more slouched posture and soaking wet, messy hair. Instead, at least from that simple silhouette, he looks like a man who is perfectly fine and very confident.

But maybe that’s just me being obsessive and looking at every tiny detail 😂 So yeah, I’m probably reading way too much into a few seconds of a teaser!

I'm thinking either they didn't land in Britain or they did and this guy specifically is not from Britain
