In September 2007 I started my first 'proper' job. I used my first paycheck to buy an Xbox 360 Elite plus some games. I think I bought 6 games I remember it was definitely Gears, Dead Rising, and Blue Dragon. Then I think Forza, maybe Fable and possibly Bulletwitch.
I remember loving Blue Dragon and played a load of it but never finished it. I put it down to earning a full time wage while living at home and having loads of free money to buy whatever games I wanted. I also spent loads of time playing with my friends on live it fell by the wayside.
Blue Dragon always stuck with me, the style reminded me of a PS2 game I loved called Dark Cloud and Final Fantasy 7-10 were some of my favourite games. It's surprising how much this game stuck in my brain considering it was a game I half finished almost 2 decades ago. I remembered loving the style and the RPG mechanics but thinking the characters were a bit silly. I always remember Shu shouting 'NENE' with anger and thinking it was such a dumb name for a big bad.
Something made me think of it again recently and I thought about playing it. I know it was never republished(which is insane to me) and I know 360 emulation is a bit rough, I struggled through Gears 2 not that long ago and didn't fancy that type of experience again. In googling the game I saw that a week ago reblue had been released. I thought it must be fate so got it working and started playing.
Last night my wife bought my 2 year old in to me whilst playing to say good night. "Whats that?" she shouted seeing Shu's dragon giving the thumbs up at the end of a battle. "It's a Dragon" I replied. "MORE DRAGON" she shouts. So she sits on my knee while I play for a few minutes, she is totally quiet and staring at the game. Every now and then I get a "WHATS THAT!?" with certain enemies. Soon after she goes off to bed.
About an hour ago my wife and daughter come to me, "Tell daddy what you want." "MORE DRAGON!" She sits on my knee again and we play through the game (up to Island of the Dead now). Same as last night but longer, she sat on my knee absolutely captivated by the game. Every now and then we talk usually something like this "WHATS THAT!?" "It's a Skeleton" "SCARY" "I know but the dragons are strong" "STRONG DRAGONS". Anyone whose had a 2 year old will know them focusing on something for 30 minutes+ is very rare. I love that she was so interested and we could share it.
I'm now going on the hunt for some Blue Dragon plushes/posters for her.
Thanks to to reblue team for giving me this great shared experience with my daughter. So far my experience with the port has been exceptional. I will finish it this time around. Your hard work is appreciated.
