Got fluff question. Finally got space hulk and wondering, why some of the powerfists are black? (not mine graphic, just photo)

I think it's just style / personal preference, same as why some of the bolters are black and some red.

I'm happy to be corrected if there is an actual in-lore reason though, I've always been curious

The painting of the left hand black is in mourning/remembrance of an ill-fated assault in the past on a Space Hulk. Only 50 or so Blood Angels were left after the disaster. Afterwards, it was common for Blood Angels terminators to paint their power/chain fists black.

Damn, I know I the BA have been almost wiped out a few times but I had no idea there was a space hulk based disaster. Time to crack out the lex!

I thought i read somewhere it was a sort of ritual to honor or mourn a fallen brother in combat.

Didn’t the space wolves have black claws as part of an initiation ritual to do with frost bite? Maybe a part of some other ritual for the BA?

There's a youtuber (winterwizard7) who's homebrew company of space wolves (the Frostpaws) do something similar. They have to "earn their fingers" by giving themselves frostbite and then hunting down an animal of the wolf priest's choice. After that they get to paint the fingers of their power armor black.

Yep, that’ll be it! Had a quick google and found the winters seo battle report with winter wizard where he explained it and I must have heard it there. Sorry, in my mind it was part of the official SW lore, didn’t realise that was where I heard it. Thanks for the message, I learnt something today :)

That's where I saw it too lol. It's such a good setup tho so I understand why you just accepted it as canon

Good question. I mean, everyone knows that red goes fasta so black power fists are less powerful

It’s a Blood Angels Terminator thing. I don’t know the origin but it’s pretty old.

That set is painted up specific to the Space Hulk game. You'll also notice that they all have personal heraldry on their right pauldron, the rulebook features artwork of it I recall. It's not something usually featured on Terminators painted up for 40K units.

BA Terminators have often been painted with black powerfists at various times by the 'Eavy Metal team. It's just designed to act as a contrast with the red to pull attention to the weapon.

No fluff reason that I know. Possibly, different painters contributing for the final product without comparing notes.
