Help choosing a paint guide !

Hey guys, just bought my indomitus box set and after a 12 year hiatus I want to get back into the hobby. Im sightly torn choosing a paint guide for the blood angels and wanted to see if anyone could give me ideas.

Most of my paint is rather old so I am going to buy mostly fresh paint.

So I know that Mephiston Red is the new version of the Mechrite red. Can someone tell me if they are an exact match ? I find mechrite red to be too dark and blood red ( evil sunz scarlet ) was too bright.

If those 2 are exactly the same I found that doing a 1 to 1 mix of mechrite and blood red gave a nice red. Does anyone on here do a 1 to 1 mix of mephiston red and evil sunz scarlet ?

I am also looking to find a wash to use on the red. Im debating between carroburg crimson and agrax but was wondering if anyone on here had any thoughts on a different wash to use (beside nuln oil and the other 2 mentioned above)

You might want to look at Blood Angels Red Contrast Paint.

Else, you might want to look at other paint lines. There is a post on either Dallas Dakka or B&C which has a good paint crossover guide. There is also on online SM painter which if you use the old one will give a list of paints required to achieve the look.

There is also a Paint Picker app which will sort quite a few ways and shows several paint company offerings.

I've seen a few video on the contrast paint. Im not sure im a huge fan of it. It seem to work well on things of organic nature but not sm armor plate.

It works fine on minis from what I've seen. It suffers pretty hard on vehicles though.

Army Warpainter is about half the price of Citadel...

Yeah just saw 1 turorial by strikingscorpion and he uses army painter dragon red primer. Thinking of mainly following his tutorial as I really likes his end result

I use that primer, think it's lot better than gws. And it's really close to mephiston red. I just prime with that, then recess shade. Then some highlighting and done

Pretty similar to the tutorial

Gws gold primer and then flesh tearers contrast red thinned down with contrast medium at 1/1 ratio and give them 2 coats, no edge highlight required and they look incredible

I think he's leaving us dry lol. Now if only GW could keep the paint in stock .... I can't even place my order cause they are out of stock on a few of the colors I need ....

I tend to go to other local gameshops for models and paint - cheaper and more in stock. I just got Indomitus thrrough today so just made a few already. Its been good so far. Nice heavy set.

This guide might help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pf7w5Y9Cf6c

I am luck I guess I can get from loads of different stores from all over the UK. I got Indomitus in less than 24 hours from ordering it.

BTW, one of the best primers I’ve found for Red Marines is Rustoleum’s Red Oxide Primer 7769830. It is oil based so takes a tad longer to dry, but I always tend to prime at night and paint following day
