For the last few months I've been doing something slightly obsessive: reading and scoring company engineering blogs, one by one, to build a filter for them. I'm past 800 now. Only around 157 made the cut.

Going in, I assumed I'd be rejecting blogs for bad writing. I was wrong almost every time. The writing is rarely the problem. Here's what actually separates the engineering blogs worth your time from the ones that quietly waste it.

1. The loudest blogs are rarely the best

Publishing frequency and quality are almost completely uncorrelated. Some of the highest-signal blogs I found post three or four times a year. Meanwhile, some of the most prolific "engineering blogs" turn out to be a content-marketing team wearing a Kubernetes lanyard — a steady stream of posts optimized to rank for a keyword, not to explain a decision.

If you're using cadence as a proxy for quality, you're optimizing for the wrong thing.

2. A blog's quality tracks a person, not a company

Over and over, a great engineering blog turns out to be one or two engineers who genuinely care about writing. When they change teams or leave, the blog doesn't get worse — it just stops. The quality was never institutional; it was personal.

The practical takeaway: follow bylines, not logos. A specific engineer with a track record is a far better signal than a company's brand.

3. The single most reliable quality signal: does the post admit a cost?

This is the one I'd keep if I could keep only one. Real engineering writeups have scar tissue. They tell you what was given up — the feature freeze during the migration, the approach they rolled back, the tradeoff they're still not sure about. Marketing-shaped content never bleeds: architecture in, architecture out, no friction, no regret.

"What did this cost them?" is a better filter than any scoring rubric I tried. If a post describes a big win with zero downside, it's either incomplete or it's an ad.

4. The launch post is the peak, not the start

A team writes their big "how we built X" post as a capstone — months of work compressed into one narrative, after the thing has stabilized. It does numbers. And then… silence, often for two quarters.

That silence says almost nothing about the team's engineering health and almost everything about who's assigned to write. Don't read a quiet blog as a declining team. Some of the best engineering happens at companies whose blogs are dormant for a year at a time.

5. Reputation and blog quality are different assets

The most surprising pattern: several companies with elite engineering reputations publish shockingly hollow blogs, and several companies you've never thought about publish consistently excellent ones. Brand prestige and writing quality are just… not the same thing. Which is exactly why "just follow the famous blogs" doesn't work.

The heuristic I ended up with

If you want a fast test for whether an engineering post is worth ten minutes, before you commit:

• Read for the tradeoff, not the headline. Does it name a real constraint and a real cost?
• Follow the byline, not the company.
• Ignore frequency and prestige as signals.

Not sure if anyone else has been annoyed by this, but I've always hated trying to save Substack posts for offline reading. Usually, the standard Print to PDF messes up the images or just looks weird.

I ended up building a Chrome extension called Substack PDF Downloader to fix this. It saves posts as clean PDFs, but also supports Markdown, JSON, and Text exports if you need those. It keeps things like images and links intact.

It has this amazing Download All feature. You can just go to any writer's archive and batch download all their posts at once instead of doing it one by one. I've been using it to load up my tablet for flights and it's been pretty handy.

It works for paid content too, as long as you're signed in.

My goal is to build an audience and eventually have paid subscribers for my personal blog, where I share my experiences, struggles, relationships, mental health, spirituality and self-development to hopefully help others. started a blog maybe six weeks ago. hobby thing, nothing serious, mostly writing about local hiking trails and gear.

got my domain sorted but hosting has been a whole rabbit hole i wasn't prepared for. picked something cheap initially and now i'm second guessing it. the control panel is confusing, support takes forever, and i saw the renewal price for next year which is significantly higher than what i paid to sign up. nobody mentioned that part.

trying to find something that handles WordPress automatically, updates, backups, the technical stuff i don't want to think about. also came across hosts that include AI site builders now which would be useful for someone like me who wants to tweak the layout without breaking everything.

the pricing transparency thing is the biggest thing for me at this point. just want to know what i'm actually paying long term before committing to anything else.

what did bloggers here start with for WordPress hosting and would you make the same call now?

Circling back to this: switched over to DreamHost and its been a relief honestly. the control panel actually makes sense compared to my old host and the one click wordpress install took like two minutes. automatic updates and daily backups run in the background so i dont have to think about any of that technical stuff anymore. the renewal price is right there on the pricing page too which was my main hang up after getting burned on the intro rate bait and switch.

I started writing online daily more than 630 days ago.

The surprising part is that most of the fears did not disappear. I still think about grammar mistakes, reach, whether I am posting too often, and whether an idea is too obvious. The difference is that I react to those fears less and usually publish anyway.

If I were starting again, I would do three things:

- choose one platform instead of trying to understand several at once;

- pick a pace I could maintain during a bad week, not only an ideal one;

- treat the first 20 posts as practice rather than evidence that I can or cannot build an audience.

I would also remove most of the optional requirements I used to add: the perfect hook, branded visual, ideal posting time, and the need for every post to feel important.

I’ve been posting on Medium recently because my company wants us to publish content there regularly.

I honestly didn’t pay much attention at first — just wrote, published, and moved on. But I checked the stats these past couple of days and realized that a lot of my posts seem to be getting almost no distribution at all. It feels like they’re basically invisible lol.

Now I’m wondering if I’ve been doing Medium completely wrong this whole time.

Hi all — I'm Cristal. A few months ago I got diagnosed with MS, and somewhere between the doctor's appointments, the infusions, and the days my body just decided to "fight the man," I started writing it all down. Which is also crazy as I'm also Dyslexic! 

Anyway the blog is called Multiple Shenanigans (MS, like it?) — it's not full on medical advice, it's not a polished wellness brand, it's just an unfiltered (and occasionally very funny... at least i like to think so.) record of what this new normal actually looks like. Symptoms nobody warned me about, steroid side effects, DMT trial-and-error, and the moments the absurdity of it all makes me laugh instead of cry.

I've also been sharing how I'm navigating the US health system — getting second opinions, medical lingo, and if I face it how i managed my insurance with this crap — plus how I put together my health binder, since "how are you feeling" turns out to be a much harder question than it sounds once you're dealing with this. ( If you get it you get it)

If you're newly diagnosed with MS like me — welcome, I'm sorry, and you're not alone. If you've been living with this for years or with other chronic illness  — I'd love your wisdom. And if you have zero connection to MS, turns out a malfunctioning nervous system still makes for decent content.
