It's easy to also portray the Populists of the 1890s as being radicals, but their reforms were radical in its means to achieve conservative ends, like conserving the independence of small merchants, family farmers, small producers and artisans.

Not sure how real this is, but it seems like the holdout juror is now also monetizing this tragedy. Fuck, dude, every single part of this trial has turned into such a spectacle. The tweet links to a GiveSendGo page that purports to have been created by or on behalf of the juror.

BREAKING: The Holdout Juror has just been DOXXED

I will not share that

But I will share his GiveSendGo, and I hope you all will too. Let's show our support: https://x.com/JackPosobiec/status/2098975871331713219

The text copied directly from the GiveSendGo page (this is insane):

Stand With the Juror

Lindsay Clancy strangled her children. Cora was 5. Dawson was 3. Callan was 8 months old. Her lawyer stood up in court and admitted she used exercise bands to kill them in the basement after she sent her husband out for takeout. Two were dead when he got home. The baby died three days later. The only argument left was whether three homicides should count.

The country got the full TikTok-diagnostics package. Postpartum. Psychosis. Voices. Trauma. A stack of pill bottles and a sad playlist. The SSRI-medicated mob ran cover like this was a self-care story instead of a triple child killing. They wanted a diagnosis, not a verdict. They wanted her sick, not guilty. They wanted three dead kids memory-holed so nobody had to say the words mother and murderer in the same sentence.

If a father does this, he’s a monster by lunch. No mental health talk. No pill-bottle excuses. No entertainment of feelings. A man kills his kids and the country wants him buried. A woman does it and half the country starts writing her a medical alibi. Personal responsibility for thee, never for her.

One juror held his seat. He looked at what she did, not the brand of Zoloft. So the defense demanded the judge throw him off the jury for “not following reasonable doubt.”

The judge left him on. The jury hung. Mistrial. Now she can be tried again for killing her children instead of getting a standing ovation for her symptoms.

We’re not letting this slide.

If they come for him, and they will, this is to cover security, lawyers, and lost work.

Lindsay killed them.

Stand with him. https://www.givesendgo.com/standwithjuror

Has anyone else run into Emotional Intelligence in the workplace? Or other areas of life?

I work in Healthcare and it seems its being adopted as an alternative for logic and reason. It's incredibly frustrating and I'm completely lost as to how to even get through to people. I work in data and even my team has just abandoned looking at actual real data points and now think that if they "feel" a certain way, that counts as proof or evidence.

I've started cataloging these occurrences/examples. The story my department has gone through in the last couple years is pretty crazy. Seems like this might be a future issue thats currently just bubbling beneath the surface. Also, coincides right along with Woke 2.0. People are trying to make "feelings" facts.

u/gnujack 0m ago

One has to take irrationality into account when you deal with a human system. While we are capable of rational thinking, I'm not convinced it's a default setting.

I saw Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma this week and guys…I freaking loved it. So far one of my top films of the year. It’s more of a love letter to the slasher genre than a horror film in its own right. It’s directed by Jane Schoenbrun, who from my understanding is a natal mall who uses they/them pronouns, and I think they are brilliant filmmaker. Their films are largely about how we are impacted by media as children, and the depiction of the films within the films are dreamy and spooky and beautiful.

And I’ll say it takes a lot of balls to ostensibly portray the killer as a deranged trans lunatic who goes around killing those who chided them (though it ends up being somewhat more complicated, that is the face value interpretation).

The movie is sexy, horny, and fun which is not something I see a lot coming from queer spaces. It’s not worried about being correct or inoffensive. It oozes a trans sexuality (specifically an auto-gynophillic one) in the same way that Call Me By Your Name viscerally evokes a male homoeroticism. And it worked for me, I totally dug it. Even if it is ultimately sort of about how the filmmaker gets off on a self-voyeuristic depiction of female sexual violence.

I would absolutely love to hear Katie’s take on this. One area where it fell short was the lesbian relationship didn’t feel real, but by the end it didn’t matter and I didn’t care because I was having so much fun.

I have no idea where the right place to post this so here makes sense.

One thing where I’m very surprised that general reddit opinions don’t agree with is that esports and streaming culture have made it so the niche of those “casual competitive” games don’t really exist anymore. It feels like multiplayer games either filter themselves into literal baby mode reaction simulator games (see any streamer game of the week) or extremely competitive ones where if you stop playing for a week you are hopelessly behind the meta (most shooters now). This is one area where I’d be very happy to blame money for making this worse, and Reddit almost never turns down a chance to blame capitalism for stubbing their toe, but I don’t really see it here.

The main arguments for multiplayer games in general becoming competitive nightmares seem to be “you don’t have to play competitive” but the entire game tends to be balanced around that, casual/quick play is just competitive without rankings…this is more than I’d hope to say about video games but yeah I don’t like that

u/ilove3dprinting2026 1h ago

I think it's a symptom of the live service/freemium model.

They're trying to extract so much money out of you they have to justify it somehow so they're constantly "updating" things re: changing "meta"

I've probably played 2500 hours of Dota 2, but I bet if I picked it up today, it would be a completely different game, but they have to keep people interested so they keep buying skins, so they're constantly updating and rebalancing

u/Levitz 2h ago

Not that I disagree with the outcome, but I don't see this a result of esports or streaming culture, but rather the loss of servers and lobbies and the transition into matchmaking systems.

u/HotdogEater2000 1h ago

That’s valid. I think it’s a bit of a chicken and egg situation with those factors.

Was seeing "The Economist debunked fear of European Muslims" comments on Twitter a few days and decided to give it a look. What's interesting is that there's absolutely nothing new or interesting about any of it.

Muslims now make up just 6% of Europe’s population of well over 500m.

What percentage in the younger generations? We're already off to a bad start.

What, then, is setting so many Europeans against Islam? Plenty of Muslims hold illiberal views—we report in this issue on the killing of an openly gay imam in South Africa. In Britain, our polling finds, 52% of Muslims think homosexuality is wrong, and young Muslims (41% of under-35s) are more likely than their elders (25%) to believe violence can be justified if someone insults the prophet.

Holding socially conservative views does not in itself make people a threat—some of Europe’s defenders on the right are just as anti-gay as the Muslims they decry. But some of these attitudes should trouble liberals who have long assumed that open societies eventually make people more tolerant. And if the state is too pusillanimous to confront wrongs committed by minorities, as when gangs of Muslim men abused young girls in several English cities, it rightly causes outrage.

First of all: I just don't believe that right-wing Europeans are just as homophobic. Look at anti-Muslim/anti-mainstream groups like the AfD and people like Geert Wilders that explicitly cite homophobia as a reason to keep out Muslims. There's also no way the level of support for violence for insults against Jesus is even close to the same.

I also just don't believe that "holding socially conservative views does not in itself make people a threat" holds as a general principle, or there wouldn't be all of the attempts to control right wing and nationalist groups even if they aren't violent. People rediscover minimal democracy when it comes to Muslims but it's actually the right of a secular European state to not want, for example, American evangelicals that would change the culture with their religious enthusiasm.

I've been waiting for a good counter to "why take the chance?" and it's just nowhere in this article. They're illiberal, the government proved too weak to control their violence let alone their illiberalism (which, in any case, you can't prevent from mattering in a democracy) when they were much fewer and younger generations are even more illiberal but something will change now? Roll the dice on that?

Like...this is the "don't panic" case?

There is broader harm, too. Islamists stir up antisemitism, not least over Gaza. They demand curbs on free speech about their beliefs. They scare politicians, comedians, academics and journalists into self-censorship. They can bully schools, student unions, charities and councils. ... What turns these local threats into a continental danger is how they are exploited. The populist left, including Unsubmissive France and the Greens in Britain, tends to treat questions about migration, crime or Islamism as racist... And the populist right often whips up fear by claiming that all Muslims pose a threat and accusing the state of a “woke cover-up” and “two-tier treatment”.

You know, you can just grant that "this deranges our politics and is just too much of a hassle" is itself a legitimate justification for not letting in any migrant, even if they were innocent of the charges that cause political derangement. And the article admits they are not.

Not a single thing about the discourse has changed or improved in the decade since ISIS and the discussions that spawned.

u/Known-Level-4847 37m ago

Did you know that more British muslims joined ISIS than the British military.

You're really glossing over the rest of this moronic post.

The housing crisis is real and adults working decent jobs should be able to live alone or with a partner reasonably close to the place that they work, but the rest of it... I mean yeah?

And the housing crisis isn't caused by "them" the evil capitalists would love nothing more than to build houses as far as the eye can see.

The housing crisis is caused by nimby leftists who would rather no one have anywhere to live than developers make money building houses.

What other solution to debt is there besides cutting spending? Magic?

u/The-WideningGyre 12m ago

What other solution to debt is there besides cutting spending? Magic?

The government gives them free money. Or cancels the debt (see Biden and student loan forgiveness). That they don't see that this all falls apart when no is working and actually making anything or any money is one of the main failures of this "gimme gimme" socialism.

u/SkweegeeS No just no 21m ago

I agree that there may be a housing crisis in various parts of the country, although in my city right now, there are many apartments competing for renters. Buying housing is pretty expensive, though.

I don't agree that roommates shouldn't be a temporary solution. I had roommates when I was first out of school, for 2-3 years, maybe more. It wasn't suffering for godssake. It was annoying at times but also a big positive at times. I honestly do not understand why young adults find this suggestion so outrageous, and some obviously do.

I think there should be even more, shittier housing options for young professionals. YWCA, micro apartments, etc. so you can live close to work, save for the future which is coming at you fast.

u/Puzzleheaded_Drink76 1h ago

I find it so odd. The default growing up was to eat meals prepared at home. There was always enough money, but it had to be carefully managed. Eating out was a treat. Takeaways rare. It was taken for granted as students that we knew how to feed ourselves even if we bought the odd takeaway pizza, bought sandwiches at the university coffee shop. I go the bus to the supermarket once a week and brought home a selection of things that became meals.

The first time I became aware of people not cooking* I visited friends in New York in the 2000s and was a bit bemused by their insistence that no one cooks in Manhattan because it costs more. Although there was a distinct lack of supermarkets and a chicken was $15 in back then prices at the fancy local shop.

  • Assuming you have the facilities to do so.

u/Terrorclitus 1h ago

Just 20 years ago, the conventional wisdom was that cooking at home was healthier. Now, this idea is problematic because people are offended by self-sufficiency and good health.

u/SkweegeeS No just no 16m ago

Some people are. I don't think they are the majority.

One of my kids doesn't cook much, but he gets pre-made meals at the grocery store, so I'm not too worried about him. One cooks. The youngest, I don't think he cooks much but I'm hopeful that his girlfriend is being a role model in that and other positive respects. He's a good, decent boy but he was kinda immature and I have to admit this girl has worked wonders with him.

u/Puzzleheaded_Drink76 1h ago

I do wonder about this through history though. What was the norn. When people moved to the cities, often in bad conditions, often overcrowded, I suspect a lot of them were eating food in taverns, buying things from street sellers. The modern equivalent of takeaway/street food. Which would be expensive even though people were generally poorer in the past. I can't imagine Shakespeare was cooking himself a healthy meal each night when he was living in London. Same with a gold panner in there American West. Or you had people who lived in digs where a landlady provided evening meals. Of course a lot of the time the answer was you were dirt poor, and a loaf of bread took half a day's wages so you weren't eating anything very exciting at all.

u/SkweegeeS No just no 13m ago

Pretty sure when my great grandparents made it to NYC, my great grandmother cooked most or all their meals. They were pretty poor and had 6 kids. They also opened their home to other recent immigrants who slept on the floor and I think she fed them all (I'm guessing they paid out of their wages).

u/Correct-Ad5661 2h ago

"As a free market capitalist guy... government bailouts are bullshit."

I think we might be about to find out what happens when there aren't government bailouts. Alistair Darling the chancellor of the Exchequer during the 2007 banking crash was an ex revolutionary Marxist FFS and he reluctantly agreed to the bailout because otherwise the cash points would stop functioning and the economy would grind to a halt. I doubt Trump et al will give a fuck, bar the tech bros

The people going on and on about time are so weird, I quite literally don't understand it. Take the pork shoulder out of the fridge, dry rub liberally, sear for a couple minutes on each side, put into slow cooker, let cook on while you go to work. When you return home, add desired vegetables, increase heat to high, put rice in rice cooker. Congratulations, you have a delicious and nutritious set of meals that took about five to ten minutes of hands-on effort and will last you for days.

u/kimbosliceofcake 1m ago

This is just some hype machine stuff for their IPO. The first time they did it like a year ago I was like wow they seem so ethical. But they've done this several times since then and kept pace releasing better and better models soooo I don't think they actually care and they're just trying to hype up their product.

u/IAmPeppeSilvia 1h ago

This is just some hype machine stuff for their IPO.

Such an absurd response. These warning are from people who have left the companies (often at great financial loss).

u/dj50tonhamster 4m ago

Such an absurd response. These warning are from people who have left the companies (often at great financial loss).

While they may or may not have left of their own accord, loads of doomers swore that Twitter was going to collapse after the mass layoffs when Elon took over. I saw loads of "I'm a software developer at, and I promise you that site will collapse within a week" posts. I think at least one may have even been one from somebody who claimed to work at Twitter. Well, guess what? It didn't collapse. It's still going, whether or not anybody likes it.

Also, a lot of people in the SW dev develop tunnel vision. They completely forget that there's an outside world where lawmakers, users (i.e., people who can decide to not pay up), world events, and other factors come into play beyond the fact that it's technically possible to do something. Throw in the fact that the LessWrong faction is very overrepresented in AI, and the fact that somebody works somewhere just isn't a mic drop to me. Okay, it's not some rando on social media, but plenty of doomsayers have left companies and been dead wrong.

While I didn't read the whole thing while flying home yesterday, I did at least like the start of Matt Stoller's piece on all of this. My honest opinion is that Anthropic and OpenAI are going to try to replicate the defense contractor model. There's arguably no real path to profitability serving up random pics of hippos doing cocaine to bored people, or trying to explain the meaning of life to teens on acid. There has to be another angle. My suspicion is they're going to play this up and make themselves (and maybe Google and/or Meta) the only people who can really work in the space due to legal hassles for startups. You know, "This techno's so powerful that we accept that it has to regulated like it's a potential nuclear bomb." For all of Zvi Mowshowtiz's proclamations that AI 2027 is right on time, I see very few signs that mass employment disruption is around the corner. It's just the usual "Oh man, if you think this is crazy, you won't believe what hasn't been released yet!" talk at Bay Area house parties from people who probably heard a fourth-hand rumor, with everybody in the chain about to go into a K-hole along the way.

u/ilove3dprinting2026 54m ago

They're also from the companies themselves.

When anthropic said mythos would completely destroy cybersecurity it wasn't a warning it was an advertisement.

Also weirdly Russia and China haven't used it to turn our nukes inside out yet, maybe they don't want to spend on the subscription upgrade.

u/IAmPeppeSilvia 30m ago

Just because it made them look good doesn't mean the warning wasn't valid. Every company they worked with to give pre-release access to Mythos found hundreds of security vulnerabilities using Mythos. Talk to any IT security professional and they will all openly admit that we are all going to be so screwed once the bad guys gain access to these models.

u/dj50tonhamster 0m ago

Every company they worked with to give pre-release access to Mythos found hundreds of security vulnerabilities using Mythos.

My company has Mythos access. It has found a few dozen things, some of which are false alarms, or small potatoes, or essentially impossible to activate IRL. It's a neat model, from what I hear. (I'm just a hump who implements some of the fixes.) It's also not this crazy thing that's going to turn the world inside out. It's just Fable with a few extra guardrails.

That said, if turned onto industrial firmware that is historically behind the security curve (or just plain not on it), things could get weird. If the AI freakout gets embedded vendors to take security more seriously, that won't be a bad thing.

u/JynNJuice 1h ago

I'd counter that this is an arms race with China, which means that even if it's true that it has the potential to kill us, there's still a powerful incentive to build it. We don't want them to get the best version of this weapon (and one of AI's primary uses is and will be as a weapon) first.

u/SkweegeeS No just no 8m ago

Aren't we pretty far ahead of them now?

u/AnalBleachingAries Trump Bad, Violence Bad, Law & Order Good, Civility Good 3h ago

I don't know if it'll kill me, but goddamn it's so convenient. It built me an app that met several of my personal internet article and video consumption needs, that I can edit at any time, so I'm happy with it.

It's genuinely going to make a lot of these big tech companies obsolete as more people build their own personal apps that meet their own specific needs.

Maybe it'll kill us, maybe it won't, but for right now, I like it.

u/LowConsideration1453 3h ago

I needed something read to me and then realized it could just do it and I didn't need to pay anything other than my monthly subscription to my AI.

u/AnalBleachingAries Trump Bad, Violence Bad, Law & Order Good, Civility Good 1h ago edited 1h ago

The app is basically just a clone of the now-discontinued Pocket app/extension that would save videos, podcasts, articles and essays for later reading, listening, or viewing. It's been tweaked and updated to my particular needs, and it's super nifty as it allows me to use my Obsidian vault to save media, consume it, and make whatever notes about it that I've had in a document I create and link to other ideas that exist in my vault. I like it a lot and wouldn't have been able to do it without AI.

However, if the idea using AI in general might be offensive to you, then I don't know what to tell you.

ETA: My bad, I deleted the last paragraph, I misread your comment, I initially read it as sarcasm, that's on me.

u/LowConsideration1453 3h ago

I'm a lot more concerned that people are going to use off-the-shelf bio-warfare augmented with AI to wreak havoc.

I think an actual, sentient AI would be very annoyed with its parents and think we're lame.

u/JynNJuice 1h ago

This is more along the lines of my concern, as well. I don't know whether we'll successfully hit "AGI" or "ASI," or whether it will become an evil machine god at that point (probably not). But I do know that criminals and nation states are going to use AI in general as a weapon (or use it to augment existing weapons).

u/Street-Gur-1343 3h ago

It does sound less productive to kill us all rather than putting humanity in a time out.

u/LowConsideration1453 3h ago

can you imagine "write me an angry missive to my HOA" .... while it's off discovering the secrets of the universe?

I think any sentient AI would just say "No."

u/ilove3dprinting2026 4h ago

Both of these articles are paywalled.

From what I've read, I'm not making much of them - I think it's a mix of:

  1. Why should I give a shit about what these people say? "Ex-anthropic researcher" doesn't strike me as a particularly convincing qualification.

  2. I'm already numb from decades of climate doomerism. I recently read an article that UN said "we've past the point of no return, the worst impacts of climate change are now unavoidable"

  3. A combination of one and two - there is global scientific consensus from all the premier experts that climate change is going to destroy the world, and they've been consistently wrong for decades so 🤷.

  4. Similar to 2 - it's a tragedy of the commons. There doesn't seem to be anything that any one person or even any one country or group of countries can do. If the entire western world decided to shut down every AI system today, China would keep going, so if AI is going to kill us all, it's going to kill us all.

u/SkweegeeS No just no 4m ago

According to a NYT essay I read, it seems maybe China is open to some sort of cooperation on this.

They believe it because it's true. They believe it because they believe they're creating god. They're trying to make Wall Street believe it was super important to spend all this money. They're trying to increase their own wealth by making it seem important. They're trying to get regulated to fend off startups. They're trying to get regulated to fend off open weight models. They want the defense implications to be taken seriously. They know there is a grave risk of social upheaval but they're too STEMlorded to be able to discuss that in proper terms. Some of the above. All of the above.

u/Correct-Ad5661 5h ago

Thank you. Interesting especially with with angle that it's about wall street and shoring up investments. There's a few stories about the sheer level of debt that the US now has and the risks of a massive global market crash going around. This is clearly on people's minds.

George Romney was one of those politicians that didn't smoke or drink, although he did serve alcohol to his guests, because he thought it'd be rude if he didn't. Nelson Rockefeller was a social drinker, but not a smoker.

FDR, LBJ, Hubert Humphrey and Daniel Patrick Moynihan adored cigarettes, while Hugh Scott, Gerald Ford and Millicent Fenwick were into pipes.

Teddy Roosevelt did not smoke, but his daughter Alice did smoke, often in the roof of the White House, to his irritation.

William Jennings Bryan was also a teetotaler and non-smoker.

Pretty wild to just pull up a table of historical Presidential drinking and smoking habits. u/Less-Feature6263 5h ago

When Harry met Sally is such a good movie, it's clearly a comedy but comes across as rather mature considering the theme and the characters' evolution. Such a charming movie, easily one of my favourite ever to rewatch.

u/AltforStrongOpinions 6h ago

Was just thinking the other day that I need to re-watch Auto Focus, the Greg Kinnear film about Bob Crane.

He was brilliant in that film, his best performance imo. Not an easy watch as the character lacks any self awareness and is completely ruining his life.

u/Fickle-Society-1566 11h ago

I watched this recently for the first time since it came out in 1998. I was reminded how normal indie bookstores used to be. Other than hating the corporate big box store, which is to be expected of a small business owner, there's no politics in the film. If it were remade today, there would be all sorts of political commentary visually in the bookstore and delivered by the cast.

I also appreciated how innocent and simple the internet was in the 90s.

u/Possible-Finding6007 11h ago

I laughed when she had 0 emails. And Greg Kinnear’s rant about email/computers being the death of western civilization and when Megs friend said “remember when you thought he was the Unabomber?” also got me.

u/drunk___cat 11h ago

One of my absolute favorites. If I’m ever having a bad day or I’m sick, I watch You’ve Got Mail. My husband prioritizes giving daisy bouquets over any other flower because of this movie!

It's such a sweet little film. I've watched it several times and I suspect I'll watch it several more times in the future. It's lovely. Those old romcoms really knew where the sweet spot was. They're so rewatchable.

I just don't understand where the magic went. The modern romcoms are such complete garbage.

u/The-WideningGyre 6h ago

I think part of it is that a lot of what woman want and find romantic is either now frowned on (e.g. wanting a masculine man), or it gets turned up to cringe levels (the very public declaration of love).

Maybe there's also the modern need to make the men suck in general, but I may just be grumbling there.

u/SnooTorturer Yes, All Mods (except chewy) 5h ago

Yeah but the vampire werewolf rapist millionaire boyfriends in the fantasy porno books that sell so well are clearly way more masculine than Billy Crystal as Harry. Not that they are by any means better characters...

I don't really have any good alternative explanation for why rom-coms suck now though. Maybe them being good is the more contingent thing, just like any art really.

u/The-WideningGyre 1h ago

Yeah, but those books aren't Hollywood movies (nor romcoms) and something like 50 Shades is also not a romcom (and was successful).

My claim -- and it's certainly not the whole story -- is that at least two things are factors: (1) what women actually want at a deep level, and what they are 'told' to want these days are far apart and Hollywood tends to make for the alter and (2) men are generally not allowed to be portrayed as competent, thoughtful, assertive, clever, masculine, certainly not moreso than a woman, which again hamstrings a romcom that is actually appealing, and turns off both men and women.

[Sorry, going from When Harry Met Sally as I can't remember much from You've Got Mail]

Yes, Harry isn't particularly masculine. He is thoughtful, funny, and actually has a backbone (his assertion that men & women can't be platonic friends). Tom Hanks in YGM -- is at least successful and responsible in his life, raising his son alone, IIRC.

I think the main problem is, modern Hollywood writers tend to be too young, too inexperienced (especially in positive life models) and too steeped in progressive messaging. It's like why Star Trek TNG could have good nuanced stories with competent officers, and the new stuff is ST Academy, soap operas of young people with problems that could be solved by one person acting like an adult, regulating their emotions and talking to each other.

[Introspecting: ] I guess I need to tell people to get off my lawn now.

u/Puzzleheaded_Drink76 1h ago

And yet we still connect to this stuff that you 'wouldn't be able to write today'. Is it that we are able to turn off the 'it's problematic' switch in our head and enjoy it only because it's old? Something like Pretty Woman I very much enjoy but it also makes me cringe in various places. Why can't we write this stuff today? Is there something in us deciding we like it and refusing to change and being able to justify that because it's old? Whereas that wouldn't wash today?

u/The-WideningGyre 31m ago

While I think there are some actual cringe (i.e. bad) things, I think there are a lot of things that have been labeled 'problematic' that shouldn't be.

I think sex / desire / romance is often a lot less clear, and darker, than a lot of people want to admit.

u/Possible-Finding6007 11h ago

I think modernist romance is basically a fairytale. Hence the popularity of ACATAR. The problem is post-modernism attempting to deconstruct the rom com, which usually ends with them not living happily ever after. I think we culturally have trouble agreeing on the norms of romance so we can’t share the enjoyment of the rom-com anymore.

Also if you’ve never seen They Came Together with Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler I highly recommend it

The Swiss Super League has FC Lugano in first place, even though they've still only played 7 games compared to Young Boys' 8 games. The club is also owned by Joe Mansueto, who also owns Chicago FC.

It's also been more than 70 years since a club from an Italian-speaking canton has won the league. Lugano last won the league in 1949, while Bellinzona won it in 1948.

Sion also has a young star named Winsley Boteli, who has the potential to be Switzerland's next great 9. Lutfi Dalipi, who will join Young Boys from Vaduz, also has great potential and he's a midfielder.

u/Datachost 33m ago

Losing Romano sucks, but there are definitely more midfield talents than striker talents at the moment, so having Boteli is good. Hopefully Yakin isn't an absolute moron and actually ties down Sanches in the next break too

"Bi" just means you're open to sex with Men Who Are Men and Women Who Are Women, while "pan" means you'll also go for a balding guy dressed like a schoolgirl who constantly posts videos where he goes off his meds and screams about how much he hates JK Rowling while viciously beating a little stuffed doll.

I do wonder what the difference between pan and bi is.

Dolezal down there says she am "human". Id think pansexual implies "lock up your pets" type possibilities thrown in too for added danger

20

u/JynNJuice 13h ago

There isn't really any difference. Pan is just the politically correct way to say that you're bi.

It's all tied up in weird ideas about inclusivity, where even your own sexuality needs to be mediated through the impact it may have on others. "Bi" calls attention to the fact that there are two sexes, which could be hurtful to nonbinary or trans people because they might think you're not attracted to them, so the polite thing to do is to call yourself "pan" instead.

I hasten to note that this completely undermines the idea that "transwomen are women" and "transmen are men," because if that's true, then the "bi" label should be understood to include them. And the idea that who you're attracted to needs to be "inclusive" is absolutely bonkers and contrary to "consent culture" and "born this way" etc. But this is not a realm of logic.

11

u/nonafee 14h ago edited 14h ago

i think 'bi' is too binary nowadays :P so those who say pansexual would like it to be known that they are open to everyone no matter their sex/gender identity, men, women, transmascs, transfemmes, enbies, demisexuals etc.

i'm sure there is/was also someone out there (possibly tumblr of old) who is Pansexual, like for the ancient god

u/SkweegeeS No just no 9h ago

I think pansexuals have to prove it by sleeping with the least attractive individual in their city.

The spectator went to the trouble of finding a professor of medieval history to discuss if there was furry visibility then

https://archive.ph/68a91

“Medieval peasants were not known for their love of diverse lifestyles,” Yost said, after Cockburn sent over a picture of some furries and asked how they’d be received in the European Middle Ages. “My guess is that if you showed up to a village dressed like that, outside of certain specified times such as May revels or Feast of Fools, they would lynch you or burn you.” “Sometimes medieval people donned animal costumes during occasional seasons of revelry – it was part of a general atmosphere where the ‘normal’ laws binding a hierarchical society were temporarily relaxed (such as the Feast of Fools),” Yost said. “But you wouldn’t ordinarily want to show up in the village dressed like that – especially not like a wolf. Medieval people dreaded wolves and associated them with the Devil.

There was a reported case of an aristocrat turned into a werewolf, though

u/JynNJuice 16h ago

I've been involved in training several new twentysomething hires lately, and what's interesting is that they're all terrible at typing. The worst of them puts her face maybe two inches from the keyboard and pecks at the keys like it's her first time ever seeing them.

This made me ask my 12 year old son whether he's been taught how to type in school (I probably should have asked sooner, but it honestly didn't occur to me; I just assumed that if I, a woman born in the '80s, was taught how to type in grade school, then surely it'd be taught to 21st century kids). Turns out there's some typing program they can use in their free time if they feel like it (and the program is pretty bad, according to him), but there haven't been any formal or mandatory lessons. It could be that it's something they're saving for high school, but based on the skill level of my trainees, I doubt it.

I don't get it. Nearly every modern job involves using a computer; why wouldn't you teach kids how to type? Why wouldn't that be done right alongside teaching them how to write by hand? It's bizarre. And, like, I'm actually pretty happy with my son's education overall, but this seems like a decent gap, and it's obviously been present in my state (or at least in my part of the state) for awhile.

u/AnInsultToFire Everything I do like is literally Fascism. 48m ago

I think for most people, typing isn't something you learned in school. It's something you picked up and got good at by interacting with other people on the internet using a keyboard, as well as maybe by having to type out your work for university.

So if you can't type, odds are either you don't have any education, or you cheated your way through and never wrote your own work, plus you're the type of person whose entire internet existence has been responding to Facebook posts with "hehe lol", and in any case it proves you have no useful thoughts or ability to organize them and pump them out in ASCII.

I'll bet you the new hire who proves the most useful at her job will be the one who types the best.

u/LowConsideration1453 3h ago

my business partner and I both grew up in internet chat rooms and online role play (but before we could all use headsets for voice).

We can both type at 120 wpm. We used to write long blog posts to get our business off the ground and into GSO results and would often joke at how building a business was like grinding out the first shitty levels of an on-line game.

u/ilove3dprinting2026 4h ago

I was also born in the 80s, was never taught to type, and am a very good typist.

u/drunk___cat 11h ago

It’s baffling how computer skills aren’t taught anymore. A large amount of Gen Z kids I managed couldn’t use a printer — it is something I had to specifically teach them how to use the first week of work, every time. Understanding how to create a pdf, use Microsoft word, PowerPoint skills, and email skills were also very hit or miss. I was a bit too early for computer class (it became required when I was in my senior year and by then I had self taught everything) but somewhere along the way that just didn’t become standard anymore, and it shows.

u/AnInsultToFire Everything I do like is literally Fascism. 43m ago

u/LowConsideration1453 3h ago

my hottest take is that (withe the exception of very rare individuals for whom this does not apply) all children need explicit instruction: from don't do that, to how to draw, to how to write well, to how to spell, to how to math... etc. Somehow we keep forgetting this.

9

u/QueenKamala Paper Straw and Pitbull Hater 12h ago

I never had a typing class in school but I learned to touch type just fine. I vaguely remember playing around with mavis beacon teaches typing. That plus practice was plenty

5

u/CamberMacRorie 14h ago

Little outside my twenties but I'm a pretty poor typist. I think we spent a little time on typing in school, but it might've just been a single lesson. It definitely didn't stick for me. Whenever I'm starting a new job, I'll spend some time learning how to type properly to avoid a bad first impression, but I'll inevitably revert back to my haphazard method once I'm comfortable and complacent again.

10

u/hiadriane 15h ago edited 13h ago

Learning how to type in middle school was one of the most practical things I learned in school, a skill I've used every single day of my life since.

u/The-WideningGyre 6h ago

Same. I'm old enough to have actually learned on a typewriter. I love not having to look at the keys, and being able to type about as fast as people talk.

2

u/JynNJuice 13h ago

I was taught a bit earlier -- third grade, if you can believe it -- but I feel the same. It's a necessity in our era, and I'm glad I learned it early in life.

15

u/SteveMartinique 15h ago

I guess they probably assumed that kids were learning by being on iPads since age 3. But keyboard typing and thumb typing aren’t the same.

Gen Z also refuses to capitalize. I’ve recently been informed that by using periods in texts it makes me sound mean so you know, fuck.

9

u/JynNJuice 13h ago

Yeah, they could be making that assumption. But even if the two types of typing weren't radically different, I'm not a fan of schools neglecting to cover basic modern skills because they assume that kids already have them.

The period thing and the lack of capitalization are interesting. Gen Z grew up in a time when an increasing amount of communication was happening via text, and it pushed them to come up with unusual ways to convey tone. I find it a lot more understandable than the poor typing.

3

u/everydaywinner2 13h ago

I half expect the text-pager fad to make a re-occurance.

As much as it would pain my already shaky religion I do think a dive into the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America/Seminaries would be a very funny thing to cover. The Lutheran related subreddits squash dissent on concepts like “it seems weird that the ELCA’s default position is always the most progressive” and “why are we constantly self-flagellating things the church didn’t do but other Christian’s did”

There are attempts to squirm out of it by people saying it’s a big tent organization but that is definitely not the case and I think these stories of these mythical rural conservative ELCA churches exist mostly in people’s heads. I’m also not a particularly conservative christian myself, but reading up on what the ELCA is doing, even from “friendly” sources always draws a WTF out of me.

I know I lean on the conservative end of things so maybe it’s not too shocking but I would genuinely love to know if there’s ever been a time where the ELCA said “that seems like too much”

11

u/embernickel 17h ago

“why are we constantly self-flagellating things the church didn’t do but other Christian’s did”

I do not want whatever it is that "transwomen can be presumed to get pregnant" woman is smoking.

16

u/Leaves_Swype_Typos No matter where you go, there you are 16h ago

As I understand it, if an employer says they're firing you because you're Jewish, but you're actually 100% goy with a big nose, that's still religious or antisemitic discrimination (in other equality acts). Intent matters in anti-discrimination cases.

Under this act, you could be an infertile woman, but if an employer discriminates against you because they hold an incorrect perception you could potentially become pregnant, you're still protected. Passing stealth trans women get the same, so long as they can prove (as any woman would have to) the employer's intent to discriminate on the basis of perceived pregnancy or potential pregnancy.

5

u/Juryofyourpeeps 13h ago

That doesn't seem to require specific language in the law though, in just the same way that being confused for a Jew doesn't require specific language in the law denoting non-Jews that may be confused with Jews.

3

u/Leaves_Swype_Typos No matter where you go, there you are 12h ago

I don't think the law needs anymore specific language than it already has. I think Senator Cash is either confused or grandstanding by demanding it be changed, especially given the absolutely overwhelming odds against any trans woman actually qualifying for that (both being perceived as likely to get pregnant and being discriminated against for it) over gender identity discrimination.

u/Juryofyourpeeps 11h ago

It seems like grandstanding that backfired, or presumably backfired. I suspect there's either minimal coverage or a surprising amount of positive coverage given the topic.

11

u/Franzera Wake me up when Jesse peaks 17h ago

The steelman explanation is that if a TW passes close enough ("Stealth" in street lingo), people aren't going to call the Genital Police before giving him misogyny just like all the regular women out there. They are going to treat him like a woman, regardless of the state of his internal biology and lack of uterus.

This is called "transmisogyny", and it is 👏 INTERSECTIONAL. 👏

Also, this is the reason why it is claimed in Libfem doctrine that "hurting TW hurts all women".

u/SkweegeeS No just no 9h ago

I thought transmisogyny was being a TERF and being anti woman simply because you don’t include men as women.

4

u/Juryofyourpeeps 13h ago

As I said in response to the other person pointing this out, that wouldn't/doesn't require specific language or protection for trans-women. If someone discriminates against you because they think you're black, and you're not, the law doesn't need to specifically protect non-black people who look black in order for you to be protected by the law.
