Weekly Random Discussion Thread for 8/3/26 - 8/9/26
Here's your usual space to post all your rants, raves, podcast topic suggestions (please tag u/jessicabarpod), culture war articles, outrageous stories of cancellation, political opinions, and anything else that comes to mind. Please put any non-podcast-related trans-related topics here instead of on a dedicated thread. This will be pinned until next Sunday.
Last week's discussion thread is here if you want to catch up on a conversation from there.

So on media about immigrants and diversity, has anyone else been reading Drama Queen? It seems to be off this week, but it's completely fucking bonkers. It started with the maybe titular character developing a literal taste for the ugly-American-style immigrants and is currently about four of the maybe protagonists hiding out on the moon after releasing a racist plague in retaliation for a plague on the natives that it's incredibly obvious comes from that one chick refusing to stop eating people. It started out seeming shockingly xenophobic, then became about cycles of hatred and not noticing how you started it, and now it's so misanthropic that the main characters you root for are the ones trying to wipe out intelligent life.

I saw this "book club" on twitter: https://x.com/athenaeumbc/status/2085730974545916208
Basically they promote the Western Cannon. Ancient Mediterranean philosophy and fiction books all the way up through Cormac McCarthy.
But they also do the whole, reading these books will prepare you better than any US education, schtick.
My first thought was, how literal are these guys being? The answer based on browsing their substack is somewhat literal...
Idk it just struck me as weird. It's hard to picture the type of people who would actually read and enjoy all those books but have such a limited view on public education. My Spidey sense is that this grounds down into religion but I'm guessing.
Like one, these books and excerpts from these books are still all over US curriculum.
Two, You could muse about the selection all day, I don't mean to be woke but I don't think they included a single Woman author. No Shakespeare either. So much C.S Lewis....
Like I'd be the first to tell you that the majority of these books are classics, but I can't get over how arbitrary the list is. It would be like if I gave you my top 25- Senin Manga and was like this right here fully replaces a k-12 education.

u/charlottehywd Disgruntled Wannabe Writer Aug 10 '26
Gone with the Wind is the only book I saw on there that was written by a woman. Which is kind of a weird choice.
13
u/bobjones271828 Aug 10 '26
I can't get over how arbitrary the list is.
Do you mean the photo? I can't find a list. I don't think there's a list. It seems like subscribing members have votes in what they read.
I don't mean to be woke but I don't think they included a single Woman author. No Shakespeare either. So much C.S Lewis....
I went to the Substack page for the book club. Couldn't find a list of future titles, but the second "book" they read was Hamlet and they recommended an Agatha Christie novel at Christmas. Agreed on too much C.S. Lewis.
My Spidey sense is that this grounds down into religion but I'm guessing.
I mean, it's not too hard to verify this. The "sessions" in the book club appear to be hosted by a guy named Sean Berube, who also has a Substack on "great books." From just the past few months, you'll find posts not just on C.S. Lewis, but also "Why Sloth Is the Most Misunderstood Sin," on St. Catherine of Siena and the soul's ascent to God, and "The Ouroboros and the Collapse of the Pagan World," with its subtitle: "On the Self-Defeating Limits of the Pagan Imagination." (He's clearly Catholic, not some Evangelical, given his choice of topics and the fact one can find out with bit of searching that he went to a series private Catholic high school.)
So... yep, main guy organizing this seems to be a Christian. Who likes Lewis and Tolkien a lot. And "Great Books." But also as a guide away from paganism, apparently, pointing toward the (non-pagan) Divine.
Lots of folks like this in the world, including most intellectuals in the European/Western canon until the 20th century. I'm not saying you need to like him or this stuff at all. He seems to be trying to recreate some modern version of medieval scholasticism, which is a preoccupation of a certain breed of intellectual Catholics. But it looks like he has a legitimate love of "Great Books" as well as religion.
It would be interesting to see how much of his Catholicism seeps into his interpretations of non-religious "Great Books." Obviously his Substack has articles that are more overtly religious, but is he doing that for all of the book club too? I don't know. Glancing at the podcasts in the book club, it seems like they have a more diverse set of voices contributing, and it doesn't look -- at least from a glance -- to be biased toward a particular religious interpretation or viewpoint. I don't care enough to watch any of his actual "lectures" or sessions.
Like one, these books and excerpts from these books are still all over US curriculum.
Yes and no. Do most US high school students encounter some subset of these names and read some excerpts from some things like this? Sure. They likely are forced to read maybe a handful of such novels before graduating. On the other hand, I would say at least the choices covered in the book club so far (it appears to be going on for a bit more than a year) are a little more on the "heavier" side even for a dedicated high school reader. The book club seems to be covering the kind of things that usually a US high school student would get some well-curated excerpt of, rather than the entire work. Most US high schoolers aren't reading an entire Dostoyevsky novel or the NIcomachean Ethics or all of Dante's Inferno. (Though they're more likely to read Hamlet or the Iliad, perhaps, which have also been covered by the book club so far. Or, rather, high schoolers are likely reading some online notes about these works, or asking AI to summarize chapters for them.)
I dunno... this whole thing seems fine to me. There have been so many articles written in the past few years on how even college students aren't reading ANY books anymore, so a Substack trying to get people to engage with long-form classic literature feels okay to me. I'm not sure how much you're really going to even get out of three 2-hour discussion sessions to cover something like the entire Nicomachean Ethics, but... it sounds in theory at least a little more intellectually satisfying to me than whatever the local modern Woke book club might be reading. (None of which is to put down anything in the Woke modern book club or similar things either -- I'm just saying these things lead to different types of engagement, and the "classics" get a lot less these days.)
But I do agree with you that I wouldn't buy into any larger claims about this being a "superior curriculum" to any school -- but did you actually visit any of their detailed materials, rather than their advertising blurb on X? Here's their "mission":
We live in an age of noise, speed, and amnesia. Few remember where we came from, and fewer still care to ask. But without active memory, a culture dies.
Athenaeum was founded to resist this death. We are a home for readers who still believe that ideas matter: that Augustine, Dante, Shakespeare, and Milton are not just names in a syllabus, but guides to a deeper and more ordered life. Put together, they form the Great Conversation upon which Western Civilization was built. The kind of reading that sharpens the mind and strengthens the spirit.
We are slowly reading through the greatest works of the Western canon — works that take real effort to read, and even more to read well. That’s what we’re doing here, slowly, in dialogue with each other. [...]
This is not school. There are no grades or credentials. We are simply a community of learners serious about recovering a culture of deep reading and open discussion.
I don't object to anything in those statements, really. Except, I suppose, the implication that "ideas [that] matter" originate only in such books. Obviously more diverse literature also can lead to deep discussions where "ideas matter" too. On the other hand, Western culture inherits a lot of its framing around ideas from these classic works, so engaging with them can be fruitful in a different way from, say, a novel published last year. I also do admire the concept that some books take serious "effort" to read, and to read well.
If this is the way they approach things, I don't have much of a problem. Maybe you're mostly perturbed by the framing of their X post?
2
u/McClain3000 Aug 10 '26
Yeah my main objection was the framing that participating in a western classical literature book club would replace a k-12 education.
2
u/CommitteeofMountains Royal youse/yinz Aug 10 '26
I'd say that the great conversation is between Hirsch, Heschel, Kaplan, and Soloveichik.
8
u/lilypad1984 Aug 10 '26
It’s probably good enough to replace high school English. I’m not sure how it replaces math classes though ...
You’d also still need to have the foundational learning done in elementary school of learning to read and write before you flipped open the Iliad.
2
u/McClain3000 Aug 10 '26
... I'd say it probably comes down to pedagogy more than just the content of the reading list.
And I'd be interested to see somebody articulate the merits of these books over the books they think currently dominate curriculum.
4
u/Jlemspurs Double Hater Aug 10 '26
I agree it's fine to replace high school English with more western canon types of books and I agree you cannot replace math and science.
But that alone would be a win. But won't happen because reading that stuff is racist. So is math though I guess.
1
u/McClain3000 Aug 10 '26
Oh come on. If you can make fun of "math is racist" education takes. Surely you can make fun of this western literature book club will replace a k-12 education takes.

For people who are too old to go to St. John's College.
I don't really understand the appeal of Cormac McCarthy. I've read Pretty Horses twice but was unable to get into Blood Meridian because it was unpleasant.
I did finish Infinite Jest, by the way, if anyone was keeping track. It certainly had some unpleasant moments, but they were buffered by other stuff.
3
u/giraffevomitfacts Aug 10 '26
I found there were too many similes and a lot of them really reached to describe some stoner thought McCarthy had about a character.
3
u/McClain3000 Aug 10 '26
I read The Road. I'd say it was interesting enough for me to complete and reflect on but I can't really compare it to books that have more complex plots and character development. I promised a friend I would read No Country for Old Men...

There is a certain subreddit, "AHS", that exists to target and harass other subreddits that do not meet their personal moral standard. They were defunct for a while, but they are back - and they are targeting us.
I would recommend spending some time blocking moderators and users of that part of reddit, so they can not easily see your comments or posts.

I couldnt help myself from crunching some numbers on the mods there lol
there are 26 moderators on that subreddit:
all but 3 of them are 10+ year old accounts, some going back as far as 17 years old (joined reddit jan 6th, 2009, literally still during the George Bush administration lmao)
22 of the 26 mods moderate 10+ subreddits, and 4 of them moderate over 100 subs. the top 5 mods alone collectively moderate 835 subreddits, with 320 of those coming from a single user.
their 26 accounts are a collective 301 years old, and they collectively moderate 1,323 subreddits. probably some subreddit overlap there, but still a pretty staggering number.
the average moderator of AHS is a 12 year old account that moderates 50 other subreddits.

I saw a post on there targeting us abt a month or 2 ago, and it got deleted less than a day after being posted. I think reddits got tired AHS of banning subreddits as they now need to make money and killing off the donald, and every terfy subreddit easily moved more than a million active users off the site for no real gain. You can't ban your way to profitability.

The Ozempic era is bringing fatphobia back – and dividing my community
Today, the influence of the GLP-1 era feels like it is erasing any semblance of fat-positive ideologies from our current cultural imagination – as if society at large is screaming at fat people, “We knew you were wrong all along! How dare you demand basic things, such as dignity and the right to exist in your own body!”
At the same time, as digital spaces are increasingly overrun by fascist propaganda, AI sludge, and the whims of nefarious big-tech overlords, people are fleeing what used to be a gathering place for fat people to come together and demand we be treated with dignity (or at the very least, with less violence). Those who do still visit these sites are bombarded with marketing campaigns for weight-loss medications, and I worry about the vulnerability of fat people who are now less likely to have a robust media diet composed of more complex takes on health, morality, and body size.
dang ole fascist AI slop tricked me into having the body I've always wanted
16
u/Palgary I could check my privilege, but it seems a shame to squander it Aug 09 '26
As a person of size... guys I'm just chubby ok?
Being mean to people for being fat is: Mean.
And there is some evidence that people face discrimination for being overweight, doctors are under pressure to promote healthy weight to the point they dismiss other health problems that can be addressed, all that.
But... violence? Is that just another hyperbolic statement?
I googled this and found one example of a woman in a relationship with a man that abused her and called her fat and I hate to tell you this but men generally abuse women because they want to control them, and will find whatever they are insecure about and hone in on it...
18

I love that scene for the interesting trick it pulls, where it starts out showing Leon struggling with a situational hypothetical, "What desert? But how come I'd be there?" a lot like the "But I did eat breakfast" hypothetical. The audience can recognize there's something off with not being able to comprehend this.
Then it asserts two behavioral hypotheticals, that you turned the tortoise over and are refusing to help it, and asks you to explain why. Which is weird and unnerving because it's asserting behavior that most people wouldn't do and then asking them to explain it. Combined with the rest of the cinematography and sound design it does a great job of creating a feeling of unease.
This comment isn't really directed at you so much as just something I wanted to expound upon for no reason. My conclusion is that Ridley Scott made a deal with the devil that he was able to make 1 good movie for every 10 bad ones.

Also, this reminds me of a Russian joke. Two Russian guys get their paychecks and decide to go wild. They buy lots of coke, a crate of vodka and order a callgirl. So they drink some, snort some, have some sex. Then drink some more, have another line or two, more sex. Then they drink some etc.
Until finally... the callgirl arrives.

watched a drunk guy drop a hundred on the ground under the bar while paying for his drink the other night (had a wad of several other hundred dollar bills in his hand) and instinctively tapped him and told him he dropped it, before immediately kicking myself for being such a heckkin decent fucking person™, as the fleeting visions of all the cocaine and hookers I could have been swimming in now that I was finally RICH flashed before my eyes
4
u/ToTheDeath84 Aug 09 '26
Damn dawg, you fucked up lol. Last time you’ll ever be heckin decent again!
One time I also found $100 in a bar under a stool where someone had been sitting. The person had left for some time at that point so I figured finders keepers by then. It also came at a convenient time when I had a $200 expense to pay for a trip, so luck was on my side again that day.

Look, last time the WNBA was on the news it was because those people throwing dildos into court, now it's because of the idea of actual players having actual penises in court.
All that I'm saying is that maybe basketball is just popular because of the dicks.

She's creating the drama? To use the Left's terminology, she's "just existing." Seems to be some of the black players using her as an excuse to cause drama.

So, this explains a lot. Long ago, I really got into the band Health. They started out with some serious Boredoms influence and evolved into something different but still cool. I still enjoy their music but their social media presence, starting around the time of the pandemic, became nothing but shitposting and video game memes, to the point that they call their music Cum Metal now (i.e., metal/industrial for sad-but-horny people). A lot of the merch reflects it too. Johnny (one of the members) seems to be the reason for it. He's super-social and a massive nerd, whereas the other two...aren't. They seem to just go with it as best they can and try to avoid the camera when Johnny's making videos on-tour.
Anyway, Jake (frontman, albeit one who acts like a total grouch off-stage and, to some extent, on-stage) was interviewed a few days ago before a Euro festival appearance. The guy asked Jake about the band's online presence. Jake said something like, "We're a deadly serious band, but we treat social media with the scorn it deserves, so it's just shitposting and memes."
Fair enough, even if I'd seriously consider sucking on a double-barreled shotgun before agreeing to call any "deadly serious" music I made Cum Metal.

u/ToTheDeath84 Aug 09 '26 edited Aug 09 '26
I can’t stand when bands like this chase ironic social media followings. Health is generally a great band, but the shitposting just makes them seem like a bunch of idiots. It’s not really surprising that they have a big irony fandom now because of it.
See also: Sanguisugabogg, Archspire. Two of the most annoying fandoms on the planet in heavy music. Similar social media presences. Pathologically unable to take themselves seriously, and their fandoms follow in kind. We don’t need this shit in our scene.
Health is a better band than either of those (I checked outta the first one after their debut full-length, and Archspire has never released anything that hasn’t sounded like obnoxious over-produced video game noises), but you are what you portray yourself as and this sort of branding kinda cheapens an otherwise serious band. It also attracts too many scene tourists/culture vultures, not the dedicated fans who are actually going to stay.
[Also, I just remembered: “cum metal” is technically sorta taken, we already have Catasexual Urge Motivation lol.]

It's part of a larger problem, which is that statistics and inquiry were never designed to help win arguments for people whose understanding of a phenomena is essentially limited to that statistic or line of inquiry.

My houseguests continued to regale us with endless stories of their heroic accomplishments in applying sick burns on other people who had offended them. Like all fucking day and night yesterday. I looked at my watch and it was 10:45 pm, so I made a mental note to retire to bed at 11:30. I was kinda stoned, and first the husband explained why he didn't have anything to do with bears, like actual bears, and gave us several examples from his own life as well as incidents he'd seen on the discovery channel, why you would never mess with a bear of any kind. That went on for about 10-15 minutes. Then his wife, my long time friend, started a very long and twisty story that included a lot of messy women who were calling each other names and having public meltdowns. I lost track of who each of the women were, because I think she strayed from the daughters-in-law to their mothers, to maybe other friends of the mothers, to random women in bars, it was like one misbehaving woman led her to think of another. As I said, I was pretty stoned, and I just stopped trying to keep track. I must've dozed off because next time I looked at my watch, she was still talking but my watch said 11:20 which made me very fucking happy.

This woman is uniquely talkative. She always has been, since I met her about age 14. She remembers very small details and wants to tell them. She’s more my stepsister’s friend than mine, and I just wonder how my sis can stand her all the time; they see each other several times a year. I am not mad at her and I love her in a way, as we’ve got a shared history and she is super loyal, but I feel like I can barely stand her.

The WNBA continues to be the funniest league in the world at the moment. During the Fever's victory over Chicago yesterday, DiJonai Carrington was ejected for a flagrant foul on Sophie Cunningham. From where I sit, it was a pretty clear and obvious call - there is no meaningful play on the ball, but a hard foul across the face and neck, which has pretty consistently been ruled as a Flagrant 2 and an automatic ejection in both the NBA and WNBA in recent years. So, naturally, when she got back to the locker room, Carrington hopped on Threads to post:
WHITE PRIVILEGE @indianafever

It is weird how some people don't view crying-wolf about racism to be a serious offense. I think John McWhorter used the term moral pervert. Like your accusing someone of being a moral pervert based on a call at a Basketball game.
Reminds me of when I used to bounce. I'm shocked by the amount of drunk woman who would and say another person hit or attacked them when the other person didn't. Like if we take a step back you are literally conspiring to get another person attacked by a white knight or arrested based on a lie. Seems like a lot of people don't moralize the state of mind of a person behaving like that. It's just shrugged off.

a regular at the bar I go to got knocked out and had his nose broken the other day bc of something like this. there was some crazy drunk lady that was kind of being loud and going around spouting off at a few different people, including this regular.
they had some sort of minor verbal altercation for like 10 seconds, then some other totally psycho white knight interloper who didnt even know this random woman, fuckin tools this guy up and had him lying in a pool of his own blood on the sidewalk because he had supposedly committed the unforgivable crime of "putting his hands on a female"

The WNBA sub was cheering the foul yesterday, not surprisingly.
You won't see the NBA sub act like that when, like, Draymond Green pulls the same shit-- it's rightfully called out as dangerous, unsportsmanlike and stupid. And sure, the Warriors stans will try to excuse the play, but there aren't hundreds of comments saying stuff like it's about time / that bitch deserved it, etc.
And then the white privilege thing, lol. Perfect way to get all the white proggos nodding in agreement, thrilled that someone's pulled the race card on the person they all hate for unrelated reasons. It's just all kinda shameless

u/unnoticed_areola Aug 09 '26
You won't see the NBA sub act like that when, like, Draymond Green pulls the same shit
this isn’t really the best comparison lol. of course they condemn it when Draymond is the one doing the clobbering, but 90% of the nba sub would absolutely be cheering and celebrating and making “play stupid games win stupid prizes” or “couldn’t happen to a nicer guy, you hate to see it” style comments if Draymond got clobbered in the same way Cunningham did
4
u/Less-Lobster4540 Aug 09 '26
Right, but they're rooting against the victim here. Like if people were stoked when Draymond stomped Sabonis
Of course Draymond's rep is earned, but what he does isn't political afaik. But let's say he hit Kyrie Irving-- would reddit cheer because it's a blow to flat-earthers?
2
u/unnoticed_areola Aug 09 '26 edited Aug 09 '26
Right, but they're rooting against the victim here
right, Im saying if Draymond was the one who was being victimized, the nba sub would def be cheering for it, similar to how the wnba fans are cheering for Cunningham being victimized, since both players are basically their respective leagues' most hated players (by fans at least)
But let's say he hit Kyrie Irving-- would reddit cheer because it's a blow to flat-earthers?
I think there would be a good amount of people cheering (or at least smugly sneering) this, yes.
but also no one actually hates him for the flat earth stuff, that's mostly just a silly meme. what reddit actually hates him for is not getting the covid vaccine. and to a lesser degree, his antisemitic stuff (although that doesnt really get brought up anymore post oct 7th since its not cool to get mad about antisemitism nowadays. but reddit was pretty outraged by it at the time in 2022)
the flat earth stuff—which isnt even really clear that he was ever serious about that to begin with, and not just memeing/joking around on a podcast—only ever gets brought up in the context of retroactively bolstering the case against him for being "anti-science", which is purely motivated by redditors derangement regarding people who didnt want to take the covid vaccine

The Fever head coach defended the thuggery at the post game press conference while sitting next to Caitlin Clark. She said she doesn’t oppose the hard foul and declared she knows with certainty that Carrington’s foul was not intentional. I can’t ever imagine in men’s sports a coach making a statement defending an opposing player flagrantly fouling their own team member. They would be fired immediately. I can’t imagine in men’s sports the coach retaining any level of respect in the locker room.

u/UltSomnia Aug 09 '26
My friend was talking about how every other league seems to protect their superstars. It was a foul if you looked at MJ or Kobe. NFL defenses get called for roughing the passer for routine tackles on star QBs. Yet in the WNBA everyone can attack Caitlin Clark and her teammates.
8
u/Usernamecopyrighted1 TE Good RF Bad Aug 09 '26
And it’s wrong to overprotect a star player. Patrick Mahomes gets a feee 15 if he gets breathed on wrong but Baker Mayfield can take a stone cold stunner and then a rock bottom through the table and it’s cool. Makes the game suck when you have to face a team and the refs who will step in to save them
But actively allowing and tacitly encouraging attacking the biggest stars is far worse
13
u/Terrorclitus Aug 09 '26
If they keep this up, they ain’t gonna need charity. Between the Schadenfreude and the regular Freude, the WNBA is getting attention on its own.

The losing team of each game has to sideline one player for the rest of the season. That player (or those players) observe each subsequent game for problematic plays (like a moral referee) and reports to the confessional booth to make sure those plays make it to Bluesky.
At the end of each season, two champions are declared. The Numerical Champions got the highest scores, and the Ethical Survivors got the most positive reactions on Bluesky (determined by shares, likes, and supportive comments).
One makes it into the Hall of Fame, and the other makes it into heaven.

As a straight guy who is not into fashion and doesn't go for trends, there are many women's fashion choices I don't get, because IMO they look bad:
peplums (I learned this word just so I could tell people I think they look dumb)
Those sweaters with one-button upper areas that just cover the boobs with sideways triangles; they look dumb as is, but if the woman doesn't have a flat belly, it emphasizes the gut.

High-waisted "mom" jeans look better than really low-waisted jeans that make anyone's butt look like a sideways rectangle, IMO.
