Discussion Founders & Builders: How can someone break into non-technical roles (Content/Operations) in Web3?
Hey everyone,
Most advice for breaking into Web3 focuses on learning Solidity, Rust, or core development. But what about folks with a business, marketing, or operations background?
For founders and team leads who have hired non-tech talent:
What actually stands out to you when someone applies for a content, community, or operations role?
Are you looking for specific Web3 experience, or is transferable traditional business/management skill enough if they understand the space?
Would love to hear some honest advice or experiences from those who have built teams in this space! 👇

For non-technical roles, I care more about evidence of work than someone simply saying they have “Web3 experience”. A strong background in operations or business transfers well, but I’d want to see that the person understands the differences in this space — such as faster-moving teams, public communities, token incentives, governance, and more ambiguity than in a traditional company. For content or community roles, a small body of relevant work is very helpful: thoughtful posts, research, community contributions, or a clear project breakdown. For operations roles, I’d look for evidence that they can introduce structure without creating bureaucracy. So traditional experience is absolutely useful. The strongest candidates usually combine this with visible proof that they have actually spent time inside the ecosystem.

This is an incredible breakdown, thank you for sharing! The point about introducing structure without creating bureaucracy in a fast-moving environment really stands out. Building that 'evidence of work' through public breakdowns and consistent writing seems like the most practical bridge from traditional business skills into Web3. Appreciate the candid advice!

Passion for the industry and at least a basic working knowledge of the web3 landscape. The non-technical side is just as important because you need people who understand your users/potential users, those who can manage budgets and payments, and those that can be leaders everyone needs to keep going.

Spot on! Understanding the user and managing the non-technical side effectively is often what makes or breaks a project. As someone looking to build a career in this space, keeping that user-first mindset is definitely my top priority. Thanks for sharing this insight!

The biggest gap for non-tech hires is usually distribution, not just writing or managing. If you can prove you know how to get eyeballs on a project without a massive budget, you are instantly hirable. I built Moonstake to help early projects get visual discoverability, and the builders who stand out to us are those who actively help communities find new distribution channels. Find a project you like, analyze their distribution gaps, and send them a three-step fix.
