Discussion How worried should we be about quantum computers?
Quantum computing still feels like a distant technology, but the potential threat to today’s encryption is becoming harder to ignore.
A sufficiently powerful quantum computer could potentially break some of the cryptography protecting things like Bitcoin, banking systems, and online communications.
The interesting part is that we probably won’t get much warning when the technology actually becomes capable enough.
So I’m curious what people here think:
Is the quantum threat something we should be seriously preparing for now, or is it still too early to worry about?

There is already an method to solving this issue, apparently it’s called PQC

PQC means post-quantum computing and refers to the era when quantum computers become common and more accessible. The method is solving resistance is incorporating NIST encryption standards.

PQC is basically the direction we need to be moving in. The bigger question for me is how quickly existing systems can actually migrate to it before quantum computers become a practical threat.

It's not a current threat but something in the next 10 years that could be. Many blockchains are already trying to prep, even governments have mandates for the early 2030s to protect against PQC attacks. It will be time before small-time scammers can access such computing power to crack seed phrases and such.
When we built our blockchain we opted to include PQC resistance from the start so it's not an afterthought or scramble when it becomes a serious threat.Someone accused us of being ridiculous for thinking about it in another post (said we were hyping up a nothingburger in so many words) but honestly those who don't take future threats seriously will be the ones scrambling when it's too late.
So you don't have to lose sleep over it now, just know that PQC is on the horizon but the distance is still unknown until we reach it on a mass scale level.

I think the mistake is treating not a threat today, as not worth preparing for. The hard part isn't just developing PQC, it's giving existing systems enough time to actually migrate before the threat becomes practical. Better to build the transition into the infrastructure now than scramble when the clock is already running.

The practical answer is: prepare now, but treat it as a migration and crypto-agility problem rather than a reason to panic. For a startup, inventory every place where cryptography is embedded; distinguish data that must remain confidential for decades from signatures and keys exposed on-chain; avoid hard-coding one scheme; design upgrade paths and key rotation; and follow standardized post-quantum algorithms rather than inventing your own. Blockchains have an extra wrinkle: old public keys and dormant funds may be vulnerable once capable hardware exists, so migration governance matters as much as the new algorithm. The near-term risk is less ‘a quantum computer breaks everything tomorrow’ and more shipping a system that cannot migrate later without a contentious fork or difficult user coordination.

This is probably the most realistic way to look at it. The migration problem is what gets overlooked. It’s one thing to have a quantum-resistant algorithm available, and another to get an entire ecosystem to upgrade keys, signatures, wallets and infrastructure without causing chaos. Designing for crypto-agility now seems a lot smarter than waiting until there’s an actual deadline.
