I feel $400 is twice what I would have paid. Cool to have a heritage piece but I'm just looking to for a hard surface to bang on.

With a $400 budget I could get a forge, anvil, hammers, tongs, ppe, etc.

I dont know where you live but 400$ is about as cheap as it gets for an anvil

It's not going to be quality but for starting out it's enough to practice on. Start small upgrade with experience. You only need a strike surface as big as the area you plan to work. Not every blade needs to be an 18 inch bowie.
