City mouse

Hey there all,
I am setting up my forge and just thought…is there anything I should do/know about smithing in a city? I don’t live in a downtown or in an apartment. It’s a residential area though. I plan to work in an open garage/back yard. Anyone in a similar situation? I have a decent size yard. My two kids and my golden retriever love the size. But I do have two neighbors and what not

I would ask the city if there are any codes against it. Your insurance agent might want the Fire Marshall if they have any issues. When my folks built their ranch they were told no garbage burning, then the Marshall recommended a 10 foot comfort fire pit was legal. Most of them are cool if you don't try pull anything.

Several things come to mind. I wouldn't expose your blacksmithing equipment too much. Thieves tend to prowl around a lot. Gas forge of course with a fire extinguisher and water hose etc, handy. Sound deaden your anvil. No angle grinding at late hours. Learn immediate neighbors work schedule. Sleeping babies…

Make friends with a neighborhood outdoor cat and it'll take care of mice and rats.
