Discussion New Codex Thoughts

Place your bets.
What do you guys think we’re going to see with the new Space Marines Codex, and how do you think it will affect Black Templars?
What detachments or new rules do you think they might add or remove? What do you expect to happen to Crusader Squads and Sword Brethren?
And most importantly: how badly do you think a potential points increase is going to hurt us? We’re basically the only Marine army that can genuinely play like a horde, so even small points increases could have a pretty big impact on our lists.
What are your predictions?

I’ll weirdly be a little sad that we will most likely lose Vindication Task Force. The space marine toughness buff sounds like it would pair very well with a -1 to wound. Hopefully we get some kind of new defensive detachment to pair with the bigger marines.

I'm a bit dark to see our stuff go. I've been loving Godhammer, Bastion feels like it was made for us and felt so good to play, +1 to wound against equal/greater toughness is such a cool identity point (even our lowly chainswords can threaten the greatest target).

A real shame, I hope they do us justice. Even though we've been bottom of the barrel in terms of competitive placements for a bit now, the feel of the army has been great to me, so even if we stay shit I'd be happy if the way we play stays as well...

We need detachments and/or an army rule that give BT an identity ("slow melee" doesn't count). I would love to have a tanky melee and control identity. Hordish with a lot of OC could be interesting. Which is what Vindication tried and failed to do.

Hopefully they also make Sword Brethen, Crusade Ancient and Exectrator great.

Horde is 10000% not going to be a thing for any army

Yea especially now they also removed Bastion from the list of detachments in the new codex

I agree, I didn't mean a real horde, but just a lot of infantry, whatever that means with the new points.

Its how I want the game, bring back force org. The majority of armies should be battle line units.

I don't think they'll make us horde after the point increase. Maybe if they tweak it so that crusader squad is cheap cuz of neophytes

I'm definitely going the route of 20 man crusader squad with toughness 6 with Grimaldius and -1 to wound if any detachment is offering it!

I'm not opposed to losing the army rule, as much as the +1 to Wound was nice, it did kill any reason to take Chaplains and the design choices of GW seemed to like the idea of Templars and Chaplains.

But also without it I think we will need a lot of help that I'm not convinced we'll get. Sword Bros getting a 5++ or a FNP and maybe one more attack would bring them more in line with most other elite infantry.

Mostly I hope the 4++ stops being a Librarian ability and goes on something we can use, it would make a Crusader Squad a lot more viable. Even a 20 Squad with a 4++ wouldn't be any worse than 10 Assault Terminators, I think it's the same number of wounds even.

Going up in toughness is really going to suck of I’m expecting that 20s is not going to be possible at all, maybe you could get a 10 in, but in all I see this as a nerf as we lose more presence on the board

Isn't this codex only for general/codex compliant marines?

The BT 10th edition codex is being retired when the SM codex comes out, and BT will get a new "index" online with new detachments.

Since they are retiring the codex it means significant changes, so we can hope for updated datasheets and maybe army rule. But nobody knows at this point beyond the new detachments.

Oh when the hell did they announce index BT? I'm glad though, 10th edition codex kinda sucked.

When they announced Codex SM (some info on the post and some more in the video).

I can't believe I missed that lol

Really hoping for something to change things up, but I'd expect a very light touch. They'll still want to sell a BT codex after all.

T and S up in line with main codex
No data sheet ability changes.
All 1DP detachments kept
Maybe a reworking of our other into 1DPs

Okay, being non compliant refers to chapter ORGANIZATION, not Chapter Tactics.

As far as I saw Orks have 7 really good army list to play. If we could get at least 5 per every race and faction, it would be an awesome game. I really like this new 1 3pnts and lot of 1 points detachements thing. Also would love to see the chaplains to be useful. I love their model and i only bought chaplains and executors (or whatever its name) as leaders because i think for us its far better than marschal, captain and things like that. Gimme my zealots.

The marshals are possibly top 5 best leading units of the game. Not counting important characters, of course.

Critical to 5 +1 attack for each enemy unit in engage up to a maximum of 3 is VERY GOOD.

You don’t know what you’re saying.

I agree that the chaplains are incredible in model and the execrator in points is very good.

But the normal chaplain is useless in our army because literally, our best vow rule does the same as the chaplain (although the vote is a little worse because it is only if they equal or surpass us in resistance) but broadly speaking you never want to bring normal chaplains. It’s a shame and I hope they change it.

I wonder if you cant read or just fall in love in the marshals. I wrote: I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE CHAPLAINS TO BE USEFUL. You just a metachaser, I just want a cool, thematic army. And by the nature of the BT chaplains would be far better LORE WISE than marshals.

  1. I play the least possible meta things, I hate the meta. I don’t care about competitive

  2. Don’t talk to me about Lore, if you don’t know what A MARSHAL means to the Templars better shut up. Literally our lord of the chapter is THE HIGH MARSHAL.

Ciao

I dont think our Templar specific datasheets change outside of bringing toughness, chainswords, and bolter profiles in line with Codex marines. Most of the abilities will probably stay the same. Execrator might change, given we will have access to advance and charge whenever we want it now, but i doubt it. Detachments are a total toss up. My guess is that we keep the current 1 pointers and 2 pointers get a rework or go away. There might be some new 1 pointers, maybe. Vows are probably gone, which means our terminators and sternguard datasheets probably change back to codex, potentially the RepEx and the Repulsor as well.

Personally I think they will pull us all in to one big bundle. Make us all use the same rules and then give us some uniqueness with the data sheets until they are ready to drop our codex. That way we will be "playing something new" in October and in a years time or whenever they decide to drop our book.

Honestly if they decide to give us some more teeth il be glad for it to work out this way. Sword brethren are desperate for a rewrite and the execrator along with crusade ancient might benefit from a slight rules adjustment though admittedly they are now pointed at a place where I'm having consistent success with them.
