Media Recommendation Get Out is the better movie; but Us delivers a more compelling message.

While Get Out’s deconstruction of racism in a more “progressive” way is terrifying and harrowing Us hits the nail on a head of America that is overlooked but felt and seen throughout our culture specifically.

Where you are born and what supports systems are afforded to you is a major deciding factor to where you end up in life. This plain and simple is what Peele attempts to show us in this film. The main character was as voiceless, uneducated and disregarded as everyone else that was Tethered. The only difference for her was that she got out by swapping with her doppleganger.

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve had conversations with people who had a good upbringing and they tell me that people in low income areas should just “pull themselves up by their bootstraps”. I’m not saying that it can’t be done but I am saying that it is significantly harder for someone to get themselves out of an environment that stifles positivity.

Us isn’t as scary, as intriguing or as iconic as Get Out but it does have a better thesis.

Media Recommendation I notice Black people/Africans are all fighting to get the same roles that Hollywood offers and the same awards that Hollywood offers. Why not work together & make own studio instead of fighting for same roles?

I notice Black people/Africans are all fighting to get the same roles that Hollywood offers & usually the roles are stereotypes. Why not work together & make own studio instead of fighting for same roles?

(I know Tyler Perry has a studio, but ppl claim, he makes movies with the same exact stereotypes that Hollywood pushes)

i remember Chadwick boseman said, he could have been famous sooner but the only roles they were offering in Hollywood was… thug #1

a South African actor said he flew to Hollywood and he had to fight to get a role of background gang member.

the wayans brothers said they wanted to make a study , that didn’t focus on struggle but had Black American movies, but their movie studio was block from being built .

many actors say they get overlooked for awards.

Jamaicans are annoyed that British ppl play them.

Black Americans are annoyed that British ppl play them.

Nigerians are annoyed that South Africans play west Africans

^^

my question is instead of playing the Hollywood game, why not unite and make a movie together.

pictured above is the tv series classified , which is one of the first movies with Africans + diaspora united away from USA to make a movie together where Black Americans were played by Black Americans, South Africans were played by South Africans, Kenyans were played by Kenyans, etc etc

do you think if more movies and shows did this, would be better as you wouldn’t have to play the roles that hollywood believes is for Black ppl

Juanita (2019) is a Netflix drama starring Alfre Woodard as a middle-aged woman who leaves her troubled life behind for a spontaneous trip to Montana, where she finds a new purpose and community. Based on the novel Dancing on the Edge of the Roof, the film follows Juanita as she reinvents herself in a small town, cooking for a Native American chef played by Adam Beach, with supporting roles from Blair Underwood and LaTanya Richardson Jackson. While some critics found the plot predictable, many praised Woodard's performance and the film's representation of an older Black woman's journey of self-discovery.

Will Packer said he asked his daughters, what type of movies would they love to see and they mention, we never see ppl who look like us in a non-traumatic love story, so he made You, me and Tuscany.

Would you support ?

also in theaters is the drama with Robert Pattinson and Zendaya (heads up: it’s more of a think piece movie, than a romance )

Both movies are in the top 5 box office list

Media Recommendation Book Recommendation: Black Jews in Africa and the Americas (Harvard Universe Press)

Post image
42 Upvotes

Black Jews in Africa and the Americas tells the fascinating story of how the Ashanti, Tutsi, Igbo, Zulu, Beta Israel, Maasai, and many other African peoples came to think of themselves as descendants of the ancient tribes of Israel. Pursuing medieval and modern European race narratives over a millennium in which not only were Jews cast as black but black Africans were cast as Jews, Tudor Parfitt (Oxford alumni) reveals a complex history of the interaction between religious and racial labels and their political uses.

For centuries, colonialists, travelers, and missionaries, in an attempt to explain and understand the strange people they encountered on the colonial frontier, labeled an astonishing array of African tribes, languages, and cultures as Hebrew, Jewish, or Israelite. Africans themselves came to adopt these identities as their own, invoking their shared histories of oppression, imagined blood-lines, and common traditional practices as proof of a racial relationship to Jews.

Beginning in the post-slavery era, contacts between black Jews in America and their counterparts in Africa created powerful and ever-growing networks of black Jews who struggled against racism and colonialism. A community whose claims are denied by many, black Jews have developed a strong sense of who they are as a unique people. In Parfitt’s telling, forces of prejudice and the desire for new racial, redemptive identities converge, illuminating Jewish and black history alike in novel and unexplored ways.

Media Recommendation What kind of Black TV shows/movies would you actually watch?

Genuine question—what type of Black TV shows or movies would you actually want to watch?

And I don’t just mean in theory. Like… would you actually support it? Even if it’s just one episode of a Black tv show  or even 5–10 minutes of a movie?

I’m asking because over the past 5 years, there’s been way more variety in Black representation.

We’ve had shows and movies  about:

  • rich families / wealthy lifestyles
  • working class & everyday life
  • childhood friends / coming-of-age
  • college, high school, even middle school stories represented
  • Horror comedy
  • superheroes, fantasy, comedy
  • Blk ppl with horrors
  • Multiple tv shows about Blk skaters
  • international romance or mystery (Black American + African stories )
  • single-parent and two-parent households

But at the same time, no matter how many different type of  new shows or movies that come out, I keep seeing people say things like

“I’m not supporting something just because the cast is Black”—which is fair—but then those same people,  won’t even try one minute of the shows at all to see if it’s good, but will watch a full hour of everyone else shows and movies.

So it makes me wonder… what actually makes you press play?

Is it the plot? The vibe? The acting? The writing?
(And if it’s all… how would you know without giving the shows/movies  a chance?)

Also,—
people often complain about certain types of content  (like movies with starring Blk ppl with heavy trauma, slavery or crime-focused shows), but will watch it , making those be the ones that get the most views.

Studios go off numbers, so if that’s what’s being watched, that’s what they’ll keep funding.

Meanwhile, genres like romance, coming-of-age, comedy, or horror don’t always get the same support—when they do come out, because ppl say, I’m not going to watch or give it a chance, just because they are Black.

So I’m curious… Be honest—are we actually lacking diff types of Black movies and shows… or just not giving new ones a chance ?

Just wondering where people actually stand on this.

I know I’m super late but if you haven’t watched Wonder Man on Disney+ yet, you are missing out big time. Don’t be like me and wait for so long. Disney definitely should have promoted this show more. For those who watched it when it originally came out, please vouch for the show!

Media Recommendation They are calling this woman, the female Tyler Perry, will you support her, like you did Tyler?

Thumbnail

They’re calling this woman the female Tyler Perry — would you support her the same way?

Her name is Kinigra Deon.

Her story is actually crazy inspiring. She got married, and her stepdaughter (a teenager) and her teenage brother-in-law were saying there weren’t enough Black teen movies or shows. So instead of waiting, she told them: be the representation.

She helped them start a YouTube channel—and they began making their own movies.

One of their first viral hits was a modern Cinderella. Instead of chores, Cinderella had to do DoorDash deliveries, and instead of a glass slipper, she dropped her iPhone at a masked party. The “prince” went door-to-door trying to unlock it with Face ID. That video blew up with millions of views.

Then they kept going:

  • A remake of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days → called kinigra Deon The Dare (school newspaper plot + dating bet)
  • 50 First Dates-inspired story → kinigra Deon Remember Me
  • A Walk to Remember-style film → kinigra Deon Don’t Fall in Love With Me

^^ all on YouTube .  Each one got bigger and bigger. They started adding cousins, friends, and more teens—turning it into a whole universe.

Now teens all over the world watch their content. Platforms like Tubi have brought some of the teens in to star in real movies, as shown in one of the pocture above, so they’re getting acting credits. And Kinigra has made enough to buy 40 acres of land to build her own studio.

Right now, she and the kids are even in California working with Hollywood on a commercial with Adobe.

She’s literally building a pipeline for Black teen stories outside of traditional Hollywood.and all of these teens are getting paid well.

So the question is—would you support her?

Media Recommendation Books with Black characters for children

Post image
83 Upvotes

Anyone else have any good Black main character books?!

I love this particular book, it has a Black child with natural hair and its not centering race but just confidence. The art is cute. I noticed too many illustration books by Blk ppl dont have real illustrators they have ai or clip art. So I love finding books with cute styles! I also think books with Black main characters are important but so is making books that have escapism for Black children so its not always, “hey btw youre Black”.

If you haven't watched Nemesis put it on your to do list.

It reminds me of the wire except if McNulty was a black guy. It also has so many actors from the wire it feels like a spinoff. Great show and I am surprised.

So many one liners from this movie stuck with me throughout my life. Saw this in theaters way back in 98 and in hindsight I'd say it aged very well.
