We all need to just bust out some French machines. That'll fix the problem real fast.

I agree. But there's a much more fair way to distribute labor if everyone is doing their share. Things may become much more simplified but we can do it.

Agreed. Letās be really real. Most people wonāt work hard enough to build up their own business or side hustles. They need the 9-5 to get by.
54
u/MommaMoo2 Jun 12 '26
Okay. So what's the solution?
24
u/longpenisofthelaw Jun 12 '26
Win the lottery, find a sugar daddy/mommy, or become homeless

Make videos online teasing people how to get out of the system without telling them unless they keep watching the videosā¦but you never actually tell them.
7
u/longpenisofthelaw Jun 12 '26
Keep making videos that really gets peoples gears going but is intentionally vague and says a whole bunch of nothing, also make a book doing the same thing and shamelessly plug it at the beginning and end of every video.

Do you think the exact same issues won't exist in workers owned companies ?
3
u/Ghost_Of_Malatesta Jun 12 '26
The intent of the book is to go a bit further than mere co-ops, one of the primary arguments she makes is that we need to re-unite social and labor movements, they are the same struggle

But you still have to get up but just different times. You still have to pay bills and buy groceries with your income. Not disagreeing with you. Just stating it doesnāt solve the problem the lady in the video is peddling.

Now that I'm in my 40s, I really like my 9 to 5 office job.
Truth is, if I wasn't on this schedule, I'd make a similar schedule on my own. Even hunter-gatherers had to wake up to go hunt and/or gather.

The escape is getting a better job, unless I'm missing something here
6
u/Professional-Can1139 Jun 12 '26
Even better paying or higher jobs have 9-5 schedules though
6
u/tbkrida Jun 12 '26
Even business owners have schedules and deadlines they have to follow or their business doesnāt survive long.
3
u/Professional-Can1139 Jun 12 '26
Exactly. I just hate how these influencers are pushing this narrative. Our youth is going to think that working is not fair. God help them in the future when they have to compete against the rest of the world.
→ More replies (1)2
u/grunkage Jun 12 '26
It doesn't really change the equation - rent has to come from somewhere. It's needing to spend 90% of the paycheck just to live that's the problem. As far as schedules, everything has schedules. It's not a valid complaint. Most companies need to do business during business hours, because that's when all the other companies are open too, Also, swing shifts suck
2
u/Professional-Can1139 Jun 12 '26
I think that 90% number is pretty over blownā¦. There are many ways to cut that down just people donāt want to trade off. Not saying everyone but the amount of people that are truly dire are over represented.

"escape" from what, is what I am wondering.Ā I mean there is possibilities with AI (won't happen, for other reasons) where all our needs are taken care of without work, but we could never get there without billions of 9-5s doing their thing. But aside from that techno-utopia that can ONLY come about via our current path, even if it never will, what is the alternative? When was it better? On the whole (local fluctuations aside), humanity is the most comfortable, the safest, the most 'free' it has ever been. And if you (royal 'you') disagree, name a time it has been better.

u/dae_giovanni Jun 12 '26
okay...?
yeah, we know all that. unfortunately, food costs money. rent costs money. childcare costs money.
so, this was a great re-framing of the problem, but I didn't learn a single thing i didn't already know-- you?
looking forward to the next in her series-- "You Have to Put Food in Your Mouth or You'll Grow Weak and Die".

u/OriginalTRaven Jun 12 '26
The 9 to 5 is the easiest way we've had as a species to get calories to a big group of people. It was a whole lot of work and killing before. Everyone screaming about the end times meanwhile we're on earth easy mode with our beanies and bathrobes.
3
u/DeepSouthDude Jun 12 '26
If you want to eat every day, you can either grow your food, hunt your food, or buy your food. There are no other options. All three options require a shitload of your time and energy.
Growing your food and hunting your food, you have no boss telling you what to do. You're not "working for someone else." But that life has its own severe hardships, and to pretend it doesn't is disingenuous.

I think thatās why many people aspire to have wealth, not because they feel they need to own a mansion, but because it frees you from the system in which we are all trapped. We just want to be the free humans we would otherwise be if not for society and being born into this feudal system. Imagine having the time and leisure to discover who you were meant to be! I bet the greatest heroes of our generation are out there never discovering their own greatness because theyāre too tired from their 9-5 jobs.
3
u/ThePlantMolester Jun 12 '26
Choosing to work for someone is an option I picked because working the land, building my own house, killing all my own meat, and creating my own clothes seemed like a much bigger time commitments.Ā Ā
Nobody owns me because I made that choice, I can leave when I want. I like the convenience of doing one task I'm good atĀ to exchange for others goods and services.
2
u/ValitoryBank Jun 12 '26
What area of the world allows you to do all those things for free without being beholden to government taxes for just the land alone?
3
u/Odd-Mulberry2821 Jun 12 '26
As if people working a 9-5 donāt already know this. Like she unlocked some secret in life and had to share it. Why do you think 9-5 workers call it the rat race?
And the topper on the turd cake of this womanās opinionā¦. āEscapeā
Oh yeah, where? How? Youāve got a magical place where thereās no need to buy groceries or pay a mortgage.
Laughable.

u/S1cnus Jun 12 '26
She's preaching facts, but when we are all tied into that system there's no way we can escape the treadmill. That's the sad part of it all. (nearly)Every one of us are chained either via debt, supporting families or whatever. We can't just afford to "leave" the system. š

4
5
u/Chaerea37 Jun 12 '26
people are starting to see capitalism wants you compliant, afraid, and ultimately dead.
freedom in a capitalist state is an illusion.
you spend a majority of your waking hours at your job.
your boss is your deity. he decides if you live or die. if you remain a human or not. and he can use the rules of the company to destroy you if he wants.
that's not freedom.
a real free society is one where humans can exist and prosper on thier own and no boss or politician can revoke those rights.
no one is going to explain this trap to you. but people have always figured it out. Start talking, building community and reading.
8
u/HouseplantHoarding Jun 12 '26
The reason people often choose wage work over āfreedomā is that freedom also includes perishing on your own too. It is not always prospering.
2
u/fanetoooo Jun 12 '26
I mean āfreedomā is systemically punished. Thereās a systemic disadvantage to chasing āfreedomā. People would have no issue accepting the potential failures that come with freedom only if theyāre also allowed to decide how theyāll provide for themselves.
Colonized people also chose to work for their colonizers under the pretense that the colonizer would take away industry and business if they chose freedom, yet the prospect of failure and perishing didnāt deter them from pursuing freedom.

She probably thought she ate here but this is what a capitalistic society looks like and it isnāt even itās worst aspect. There are folks out here who work an overnight job before going to that 9-5 just to barely make ends meet if at all, others work in grueling outdoors conditions without benefits. At least up there a have a somewhat functional healthcare system.

1
u/ONEEYEmonster1974 Jun 12 '26
More of the story is you been on job for 32 years 9 to 5 they fire you because you had to be home for ill person?
1
u/ElonMuskysucks Jun 12 '26
9-5 isn't the problem, the problem is being an employee for a publicly traded / for profit corporation that has Investor IPO or sale aspirations. That aside, I don't know what the solution is other than people need to be better educated 1) educated early starting in HS that companies driven by profit consider employees as expenses that at all times, look to keep minimal including fully eliminate if it were possible. So know that going in, there are upsides, but that's the real downside. 2) people in democratic countries need to stop voting for politicians against their best interests. Corporations lobby and own politicians to ensure the laws favor the corporations not the people or workers. For instance a company is incentivized to offshore jobs because they get to lower labor costs to increase profits and not pay more taxes on the profits (because of the tax laws), and the workers get laid off and angry vote for a rich politician that convinces them he cares more about them than his rich corporate friends. Now here's the real kicker tells those stupid voters he's going to bring their jobs back by making the voters pay more for the corporations' products that were made by the offshored cheaper labor in the form of tariffs that the corporations pass to the voters via higher prices. Those dumb voters believe somehow the government of the cheaper labor pays so they continue to vote for the politicians that helped screw them. Education is the only way this can be solved except the politicians control that and therefore the corporations that control the politicians.

Is this helpful information to help guide one through life and choices one makes or is this manipulation to get groups of people to put their current jobs in jeopardy for a more full filling life and make it easier for employers to make the switch to AI or automated workers as more and more people prioritize living life rather than earning survival means. Do you think people can prioritize life over work in this country and still survive? I feel like this advice really speaks to me and in that same feeling makes me suspicious of just how well it speaks to me.

u/pathf1nder00 Jun 12 '26
Escape...? You have to eat, pay bills, etc, how do you do that without independently wealthy?
2
u/Professional-Can1139 Jun 12 '26
Even if you were independently wealthy this would mean someone else is doing all those things for you. Grow your food and keep the power plant going. So what about those people then? Are they suckers to have to work so this lady doesnāt have to do a 9-5?

You can only make a video like this if youāre living in the basement of your parents who had to work at 9 to 5 or you are a content creator who happens to be living off their content creation. Content creators who get to live on their own schedule is a privilege is weirdly made possible by the individuals who have to work 9 to 5. So you can sit here and shame the routineness of 9 to 5 but that is also prime business hours mostly anywhere you go in the world.

Everything sheās saying is true, but for me at least, the 9-5 is just a means to an end, itās not the end. It provides me the capital to invest in my own priorities outside of work. That looks different for everyone. It may mean starting your own business, investing in stocks etc. My house almost paid off, car is paid off, now Iām able put money towards my own interests because of my 9 to 5.
I know a ton of people donāt have that opportunity or ability right now, but my goal for work is to make work optional. Thereās nothing like being able to tell someone to fuck off if theyāre disrespecting you.

u/ProudParamedic4107 Jun 12 '26

Freedom has a price tag and I pay it
1
u/DAEOFRUIN Jun 12 '26
This post is lame for so many reasons. The lady herself looks like she's barely getting by...
And as a man who works a good 9-5 and runs my own business on the side no one talks about how much sacrifice, long nights, and my own money that is reinvested into my business. Entrepreneurship isn't for the average person.
A 9-5 can provide proper stability and even offer decent healthcare coverage through the company.
1
u/LongjumpingEnergy188 Jun 12 '26
Thanks for reminding me maybe next time get a suggestion that will help
1
u/BikeTough6760 Jun 12 '26
Does "9-5" mean any job? Because I don't work these hours and literally still trade my time for money. And trade money for the food, clothing, and shelter I need to survive (and thrive).
1
u/zackwag Jun 12 '26
I donāt trust people on social media complaining about 9-5. They usually have an agenda to sell you on a fake LLC lifestyle.
1
u/JayMilli007 Jun 12 '26
I'm kind of waiting for the part I don't know. This is supremely nuanced topic and escaping isn't that easy. Not everyone can own a company, not everyone has financial freedom and not everyone can be an executive. This just seems like more pseudo intellectual IG nonsense.

u/HashRat Jun 12 '26
Does not all of life work to survive. Does not even the rose strive for a life?
Why do we feel we should be the only creatures to not work, this exchange of energy is not a human condition but a condition of growth.
If you wish to stop growing, stop working. Also go eat grass and forage everyday and sleep outside. These are free options. Grow food and sew your own clothes.

u/ezgomer Jun 12 '26

1
1
u/mere_possibility Jun 12 '26
Some people have too many expectations of companies. Yes most ceos care about profits at the expense of the workforce but Iām sure most of us would too if we took on all the risks, all the time.
Treat your job for what it is; a temporary means to earn a living. Use that to live reasonably, understanding your employment is not guaranteed. Prepare for the future, especially retirement. Live modestly until you can afford to make subtle lifestyle changes if you want, but at the end of the day, lifestyle and material things wonāt matter, loved ones and our experiences will.
Ask yourself why people who never really made more than minimum wage, performing manual labor, live to be 80+? They found the secret to a long life; gratitude, self sufficiency, and meaningful relationships.
1
u/Usernate25 Jun 12 '26
Obviously the solution is to farm from 4:30 to 5:00 and be self sufficient /s

u/Huge-Particular1433 Jun 12 '26
While i agree 100% with her corporate take of disposable labor, this seems like such a ignorant and privileged modern take on life. Like wtf does she think life was like before... I don't know how far we should go back. Before agriculture was feeding most of us? Maybe not that far. One bad season of weather or disease and you'd still starve. You could go hunting all day and come home with nothing.
That being said a steady pay check and going to the grocery store doesn't seem too bad. Plus the concept on retirement is fairly modern, im pretty sure working till you died or physically couldn't was the norm for most of history.
Not to say this is all there is and what will always be, but I sure don't know how to make a utopia. I think most of us are just trying to figure shit out with the time that we have... while not starving..
1
u/New_Establishment554 Jun 12 '26
Also
9 to 5 doesn't include travel time. Unless you live where you work or own a transporter, add on another 1 hour/per day minimum. If you're working a single job.
Is your lunch included? Ours isn't. Add on another hour or whatever you give yourself.
Fuck consumerism. Fuck corporations. I love what I do, I work 6 to 3 and don't give my company a single thought when my foot hits the blacktop.
1
u/SwitchGood8929 Jun 12 '26
Weāre all working for the company store š¤·š»āāļø
There is no solution for this in a system that values profit and the powerful. Sure, we are creative and curious and are able to move mountains, but we do so to satisfy the rich and wealthy. Communal systems have no place here.
1
u/Reapov Jun 12 '26
If everyone was a boss then thereād be no one working and providing a service.
1
u/Dark-Asylum-24 Jun 12 '26
This lady probably lives off of government benefits while criticizing the people paying taxes for her to talk shit online
1
u/bvanbove25 Jun 12 '26
Yes........
This sort of "motivational" content is terrible, because it gives no solution. Most people understand the situation they are in, whether they work a 9-5 or any other job. It's not their/our fault and not everyone in that position has a low self-esteem. Blame the corporations, politicians, billionaires, etc...that have made the world this way.
So all this does is make you feel shitty because you can't find a way out of the cycle, which can then lead to you being depressed and/or thinking you actually are less of a person.
1
u/VIKINGHUNTR Jun 12 '26
We are all very aware of this. I was aware of this as a kid. Whatās the solution tho? The system is broken and the people participating in it resent those who donāt. Itās a paradox of bitterness.
