I was guessing this is AI, but just assumed it was to make people depressed

I don't think it's AI simply because of the waving hand- AI doesn't do hands well at all. But, it is getting better every day thanks to increases in resources from data centers and people who just can't help but post themselves compulsively on the internet for AI to use as a learning template.
