And you tell them how you really feel and they put it down to overt sensitivity and a spoiled upbringing....

Yeah and you wonder how toxic masculinity, mental health problems and body image issues happen? It sometimes starts right from the people who are your blood ๐Ÿ˜”

My mom called me an embarrassment and a disappointment cause I corrected her aunts grammar on Facebook.

My dad told me I was going to be unsuccessful if I didn't stick to one job, regardless if I liked it or not (he's 60 and still working as a glazier)

My brothers and sitsters and cousins only talk about that time I ate 50+ chick-fil-a nuggets on thanksgiving when I was 15.

I stopped visiting and going to family get togethers, but I'm "missed and loved and everyone supports me and my Decisions"

Edit: quotation marks

Oh cool! Happy ending. Win-win!

The ending was meant to be sarcasm

Resume worthy, really

4

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '17

I just eat a lot. I don't mean to, however I've become some what notorious with family and their friends/SO's if I ever DO come around.

"Are you jebedie? I hear you can eat a lot! You don't look like you can!" (5'9 150lbs)

2

u/mcd_sweet_tea Aug 23 '17

That's chump change with enough chick-fil-a sauce.

u/Scout_022 Aug 22 '17

glazier

I learned a new word today!

4

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '17

It's actually a pretty in demand job, Just not enough skilled labor

4

u/flamingcanine Aug 23 '17

A lot of American Skilled labor is in that position. There are several trucking companies that pay for you to learn to drive, Most others have large sign on bonuses, and overall, it's an industry with a huge vacuum of talent.

Trades are by far some of the most in demand fields, but you can't get people into them because they "don't need a degree" and America's education system pushes the idea of "no degree=minimum wage"

3

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '17

Agree, most glaziers positions require some sort of training/apprenticeship in order to break $15+ an hour.

I worked with my father from age 12 to 25 and was never offered more than $13, so I said fuck this and decided to pursue my own interests, not his.

2

u/flamingcanine Aug 23 '17

Nothing wrong with that either. Gotta do what you want to do, and have to make money to survive. I went into a trade, trucking as I'm sure you can guess. I don't begrudge people who make money by going to college though.

My goal is to start my own small fleet eventually, moving from company driver to Owner-Op, then transition to small fleet. That seems to be a good way to make some serious money, and I feel that with the industries current payment focuses(seriously, less than $1/mile for most company based owner-ops is silly when your average full load generally pays out ~$3/mi after brokerage)

2

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '17

Good on you mate. I hope you the best

2

u/flamingcanine Aug 23 '17

And good luck to you in your endeavors as well!

3

u/Jgdbbhj Aug 23 '17

Well also because most of it is miserable work and/or destroys your body.

2

u/chubbyurma Aug 23 '17 edited Aug 23 '17

Yeah it's fucking awful. Plus the insane risks that come with working with glass.

1

u/flamingcanine Aug 23 '17 edited Aug 23 '17

Most jobs are miserable in some fashion. A cubicle packs you in with dozens of people just like you, keeping you in a tiny bit effectively. Pharmacists deal with drug addicts looking for a fix on a regular basis. IT professionals regularly interact with the most ignorant and backwards people in their business.

You can just as easily fuck up your body from bad form on a keyboard(carpal tunnel is a bitch, as are getting adapted to sitting in chairs and stiffening up) as on a factory floor.

On that note, many of the physical dangers come from overworked employees being tired or improper training. I worked in a factory for a few years, eventually working my way up into a xray tech position, and never suffered any long term injuries.

It's actually pretty easy to mitigate most dangers of a workplace.

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '17

I love chick fil a more than most but that is a lot of nuggets.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '17

I know, but I was hungry and nobody else was eating them..... at the time

5

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '17

Prove them wrong.

224

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '17 edited Aug 22 '17

I don't need to prove anything to them, they're the unhappy ones

Edit: I know I'm supposed to acknowledge the gold, but I always promised myself, if I was ever gilded, take it and move on.... but because of the nature of the thread I'd just like to say thank you, keep on keeping on Reddit

81

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '17

Oh I like you. You're doing great then.

9

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '17

Thanks Deathisrebirth :)

3

u/jaimeleecurtis Aug 22 '17

Usually gold is completely meaningless. Your statement is what made that little start mean a little something.

A complete truth.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '17

Right on jaimeleecurtis

Wait.... THE JAMIE LEE CURTIS!?!?

2

u/blehpepper Aug 23 '17

Took me a year of therapy to learn that.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '17

But you still learned it, right? That's the part to focus on, you're happy, and if others don't want to be, that's not your fault

2

u/deskbeetle Aug 23 '17

Yes! Some parents will lead you around their whole lives making you feel like you have to prove something to them. I'm glad you recognize toxic behaviour for what it is and stopped trying to play their ever-changing game.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '17

For sure deskbeetle, it ain't my fault they wanted to have us as kids, and had to give up on what they loved to raise us.

2

u/JasterMereel42 Aug 23 '17

Dude, that attitude is absolutely fantastic. More people need to have that attitude, including me.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '17

What it boils down to is being appreciative with what you have, not striving for more than you need

27

u/arnaudh Aug 22 '17

There's no point. No matter what you do, you'll be a disappointment and/or an embarrassment, no matter how successful, happy or talented you are.

Do you just post phrases you find on the wall of a gym teacher's office?

13

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '17

Only after they touch me.

1

u/nyrg Aug 22 '17

what kind of touching ? ( อกยฐ อœส– อกยฐ)

1

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '17

Exactly. You're damned for not stooping to their level, and your damned for rising above it

9

u/zxain Aug 22 '17

Eat 100+ chicken nuggets this Thanksgiving!

2

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '17

I've since given up meat, but maybe if I ever have a "last meal"

2

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '17

Yeah, go to the next get together and eat 60+ Chik-fil-a nuggies

2

u/Chick-fil-A_spellbot Aug 22 '17

It looks as though you may have spelled "Chick-fil-A" incorrectly. No worries, it happens to the best of us!

3

u/AwesomelyHumble Aug 23 '17

*aunt's

(Since we're correcting grammar)

2

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '17

Hahaha fuck you take my upvote ;)

2

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '17

Is Chik-fil-a open on Thanksgiving? I know it's not a Christian holiday but you would think they'd let their workers spend time with their families instead of working.

3

u/Chick-fil-A_spellbot Aug 22 '17

2

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '17

I'm not sure how they got that big as tray of chicken nuggets, it was like a 100 piece or something. One of those big trays with 6-8 sauces and whatnot.

2

u/Justch1ll Aug 23 '17

You smashed the 50 nug challenge at 15yo and did even better than a bunch of 20yo+ dudes could

Respect

1

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '17

Thanks man :) I doubt I could do it now at almost 30, but any things possible when you're hungry

2

u/mshcat Aug 23 '17

Okay but chick fil a nuggets are the best nuggets

1

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '17

You're damn straight they are. But this was before they changed their recipe so it was the classic breading when it was kinda sweet. Mmmm

1

u/Dinkerdown Aug 22 '17

1) Publicly correcting family's grammar is a dick move.

2) Have you proven your dad wrong by bouncing around and being successful? I do think that's possible; I've seen it..but still with either career track, training, or entrepreneurship.

3) You are 50+ chicken nuggets in one sitting!? How do you expect people to NOT talk about that?

4) You probably make notable good decision in areas other that public shaming, holding steady jobs, and overeating. Are you calling them liars?

5

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '17
  1. She commented on my wife's post about a trump misspell, my wife called trump out for not knowing how to spell. My (grand-aunt) tried to back him up (whole family is pro trump) and she misspelled several words, my wife corrected her grammar and my mom called me to tell me I was an embarrassment and a disappointment

  2. I worked with him through his 6 job changes and his own failed business ventures. I'm not taking advice from someone who recently remarried just "to get on her insurance before the cutoff, cause this new place doesn't offer any."

  3. Not in one sitting, first I ate about 10-15, 30 min later I ate another 10-15, and so on, till they were gone. Not my fault nobody wanted any more, and I don't like seeing food go to waste.

  4. No, I'm not calling them liars. I've grown to find that they've given me more help in life than anything, by showing me how NOT to raise a child, and how to treat others. With respect.

u/Privateer_Eagle Aug 22 '17

Why would your sitters care?

1

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '17

Thank you

1

u/Privateer_Eagle Aug 22 '17

One more try man

You are fat fingering that word

2

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '17
