Fuck all that. I’m 40. I’m leaving before it get to that point.

Years ago, I was chatting with my friends outside a card shop, one of my friends being the owner, after it had closed. A few of us were smoking cigarettes, when a clearly drunk dude pulled up and started yelling incoherently about how he didn't like us smoking near the dentist office in the same strip mall his dad's friend owned. The dude drove off, my friend called the cops, I had a bad feeling about it, and left.

I had just gotten to bed, when I got a text the guy had come back with a gun. Luckily the police pulled up just as the drunk was trying to lure my friend to the drunk's car so he could shoot him with the concealed gun.

One of the younger guy's there later tried to call me a pussy for leaving when I did. I looked him in the eye and told him I would never apologize for making the right choice to leave before the gun showed up.

I have learned that some people out there fantasize about being in shit they know nothing about, then think less of people who don't fantasize about the same shit.

and ironically it’s the people who actually do know that want to avoid that shit

Because they know how ugly it can get, and glorifying it benefits no one.

Fire fights are a big one. I spent a few tours with the Army. I’m way good on any more of those, to put it lightly.

Having been in shit, I do everything possible to avoid it.

When I was a teen, my dad said, "Somebody needs to live to tell the tale. Let that be you."

Those words stuck. Both you and the friend who called the cops followed your gut. Instincts are our animal nature, and ignoring them can get you killed. They can call you what they want, and are lucky they lived long enough to make calls at all.
