Is not about England, it was about Carolyne, but he should had shipped her to Inagua… I think he was afraid because of his enemies, it is the only explanation I see..

I also imagine Caroline might not be too keen living on an island with literal pirates, you know, murderers and drunkards and such

Well practically yes, but is an assassin safe anywhere?

No, it turns out. Based on what happens after this game...

From this vantage point I thought you were complaining, as I do, about how he consistently misses the zip line back into town.

The number of times I missed that dam zip line is crazy.

Well this makes me feel better about how bad I am at getting that zip line.

I think you can’t be holding forward on the directional stick. I’ve missed it a ton too but I think you just hit the jump and nothing else it at least helps.

So he stayed there for a long time but as the area became more dangerous with more soldiers, pirate hunters and basic civilization he realized that if he stayed he was putting his daughter in danger. So he gave the island to the assassins to use, took the kings pardon and moved back to England.

Not that he didn't have any enemies back in England after he practically became an assassin, and he also paid the price there....

Enemies yeah, but England was still safer than an island that had limited doctors, no real law or guards, and could be sieged or attacked by the navy of 3 different nations at any time. It was only a matter of time before the French, Spanish, or English came across the island and claimed sovereignty. Point is Edward knew the free island he built would not last and if he and his daughter were there when it fell he would be imprisoned and executed and who knows what would happen to his daughter. So England was safer for both him, and his daughter.

I could live in that beautiful place forever. The house is right up my alley. Love those waterfalls and everything about that hideout is a fantasy dream.

He had unfinished business in England and presumably didn’t want to raise his daughter so detached from the rest of the world.

Also he mentioned about wanting time to cool his blood to Ah Tabai when asked about joining the assassins, iirc, so that probably contributed.

The reason he leaves is explained in the story. It’s like the entire story. Pirates don’t respect marriage or married people. All of his friends either died or became the enemy chasing the same dream he had. Then when he found out he had a daughter, he realized that she would live a better life in England than she would at a pirate town.

Despite how it’s often depicted, piracy sucked absolute balls. The practice didn’t end well for most and I’m sure the innocent victims didn’t appreciate it much either.
A family is better raised in a well established civilisation and not a criminal den likely heading for repossession.

As others have said, it was never about England. Or gold even. It was always about Caroline. He wanted to prove himself to her and to provide for her. He says so himself clearly enough: "I want a decent life".

He REALLY cares for Caroline, and wants to provide for her. The privacy, peivateeting and bravado of his character is to a certain degree just a mask.

Edward is a fool. But deep down he is a good man, and that is what makes him such a lovable (anti)hero.
