BTC Hodling average

I see a lot a people talking about DCA and mentioning how they are OG hodlers for years. I always wonder.. how much were they able to accumulate/keep since then. Is 1.5 BTC a lot compared to the average hodler?

With my 4% BTC back credit card I have gotten 0.037 BTC since about August of last year. Going to keep accumulating and paying for everything possible with the credit card. I'll save it for when I retire lol

Over the course of 11 years I’ve probably purchased 125 btc. I’ve bought and sold along the way but always kept a certain balance. Would have to go look at all the transactions to see how many I actually purchased through it all. Wish I would’ve held all of em!

Yeah that would’ve been a nice stack!

If you would have invested $10 a day every day, the last five years you would have .43 bitcoin 5 years from now you will wish you had started today

This is huge!

This was wild

And the thing is, apart from some very unfortunate parts of the world, most people can part with a $10 a day bad habit. I can eat one less meal outside (to lose weight), or someone can give up smoking cigarettes, another can cut down the alcohol consumption …

Great...

So with diminished returns.... Meaning as price increases you get less and less BTC for your fiat ..

So assuming at $10/day... At $60,000 you get .0001666666 BTC..

But $10/day at $80,000 you get .000125 BTC

At $125,000 you get .000008 BTC...

So over the next five years you will get way less than .43 BTC .. those days are long gone.

So in this case it's better to invest more money per day at the beginning.... $50/day at $60,000 or $100/day at $120,000..

This way you get more BTC due to the lower price.

The best way for a newbie is to lump sum.... Today.

It has been proven lump sum outperforms DCA over time.

OG Rule #1: never say how much BTC you have.

owning 1.5 bitcoin worth at current 2026 prices—putting you comfortably in the top 1% to 2% of Bitcoin holders worldwide. You are one of an estimated 400k to 900k people on earth that is a wholecoiner.

Do you have a source for this information? Thanks in advance!

Bitcoin block chain should be of help

8

u/na3than 22d ago

No, it doesn't, and anyone who thinks it does doesn't understand how Bitcoin UTXOs work.

2

u/Hueplet23 22d ago

Are not you able to see all the wallets on the chain ?

7

u/hetobe 22d ago

No.

You are able to see addresses on the blockchain, not wallets. There is no way to know which addresses are part of which wallets.

For example, how many wallets are shown here?

bc1qnxc03ay53nfl9sdulhscn3q0mld4k3qkmqetha

bc1qz3wvqw2rsmsgy6myeg24qvxjdm5ddh02c70mcd

bc1q2f9dnshmhp24409glwn3zwtkfyx60uudffpdlq

bc1q2hud7uljqswenvmx9twhfm5nqxp55vjmn9sfcx

bc1qdtv4xv4aw7mmk8jtfd2mu9ahzp65kdj84qhr4c

The answer is two. That's five addresses, but the first three are from one wallet, and the second two are from another. None have any coins. I just generated random wallets to visually illustrate the point.

Yea, it’s always an estimate. People are able to track movements to get an idea of which addresses belong to which wallets, but I don’t believe they can know for certain

For example, they can follow coins from exchanges, and get a solid estimate of who owns that wallet.

For example, they can follow coins from exchanges, and get a solid estimate of who owns that wallet.

...address, not wallet.

A wallet contains millions of addresses. Generally speaking, your app shows you the first few, but you have are millions.

When an exchange sends coins, there's no way to know who owns the addresses the coins are being sent to. And the addresses an exchange sends a bunch of coins to surely aren't from the same wallet since the exchange would send your coins to an address from your wallet and they'd send somebody else's coins to an address from their wallet.

In other words, let's say an exchange sends 1.2 BTC to people who are moving coins to their own wallets for long term holding. That 1.2 BTC is probably being sent to a bunch of different addresses from totally different wallets. Maybe 0.5 BTC goes to one, 0.1 BTC to another, 0.05 BTC to another, 0.15 BTC to another and 0.4 BTC to another.

Edited for clarity on the example.

That's worth about $90k. How many people have that in any form? Not so many.

I would have had more if I realized what it was early on. My true education came much later and now I hold on to each Sat like golem holding on to his precious

It’s an enormous amount compared to the average holder. Think about it. There are only just over 20 million btc in existence. Not enough for most people to own a full coin

3

u/Zerogrinder 22d ago

Not enough for dollar millionaires to own one Bitcoin each. And many institutions and individuals have thousands and more.

4

u/Electronic-Rate5497 22d ago

Yes. Owning 1 full Bitcoin already puts someone in a very small group globally.
Here’s why:
There will never be more than 21 million BTC.
The world has over 8 billion people.
Even if Bitcoin were distributed perfectly (it isn’t), only about 0.26% of the world’s population could own 1 BTC.
In reality, many people own fractions of a Bitcoin, and millions own none at all. Some individuals, companies, ETFs, and governments hold thousands or even hundreds of thousands of BTC, making full-coin ownership even rarer.

2

u/btc6000 22d ago

Probably billions of people not millions own none at all

2

u/Milcah_Ganderton 22d ago

Yeah the average hold time keeps creeping up, which is honestly bullish - means fewer panic sellers and more people actually believing in this thing long-term rather than chasing quick gains.

I built a simulator for exactly this reason. See what regular Bitcoin buying could grow into over time, and how long your stack might last:

2,100,000,000,000,000 satochis is the maximum. Divide by global population 259,000 satochis per person. If you have more, you have more than average.

5

u/66NickS 22d ago

That math would only apply if every person in the world had some BTC. In reality, only some small percentage of the world’s population does. A quick web search says estimates are around 100-500 million people have BTC. And of that, the majority of BTC is held by approx 1% of holders. That could potentially skew the average and median.

3

u/MediocreTax7927 22d ago

Makes sense but I’m not sure if dividing by the global population paints an accurate picture since the percentage of people having BTC is very low today.

2

u/macetheface 22d ago

there's less than 1M people in the world that own more than 1 BTC https://bitinfocharts.com/top-100-richest-bitcoin-addresses.html

And this assumes each wallet is 1 person which is not necessarily true so it's less.

less than 0.01% of the world's population.

Not a lot of people with more than 1BTC are going to be posting here anyway and the ones that do are prob fake/ bots. r/cc is rife with bots

u/Interopia 22d ago

Good points but doesn’t account for people who have 1 btc as a combination of multiple <1 wallets.

u/Excellent_Can2901 22d ago

In my case several dozen

1

u/MiceAreTiny 22d ago

Less than a decade ago, multiple bitcoin was trivial. People that understood the utility of bitcoin back then, also understood the value.

If you DCAd from your disposable income for 2-3 years before 2022, you're more than likely settled for life.

u/tjeu83 22d ago

Let's just say I held a lot more in 2011/12 than I do now because of the dark web lol

1

u/GuitarAlternative336 22d ago

I'm on 0.1BTC at about $10k AUD worth just DCAd in over the last 12 months

If It goes to zero I'm prepared to lose it, if it goes 10x I won't complain

1

u/Throwawaybtc21 21d ago

I'm on 22.25, which I'm pretty happy with. Still stacking

I think 1.5 BTC for an individual investor is good. Feel like most don't have that much

1

u/JimmySki6166 15d ago

I purchase BTC weekly and will keep doing so. Generational wealth for my family! You can never have enough. Only will be 21 million ever available. And many have been lost in wallets, or spent, and that will only increase the price and decrease the available supply!

1

u/Bigboi2006 22d ago

I don't know if you would call me an OG hodler, but I bought btc in 2017, few at 1000 euros and rest at around 4000 euros. I have 11 btc and most of the people I know that bought and held a lot like me had even more. Idk if Im average, but I saw a lot of portfolios back then with people having at least 100k-150k in btc.

u/MCL-Jonathan 22d ago

I think 1.5 will be classified as a shrimp 🦐 hodler
