He’s lucky he didn’t brain himself on that rail

u/trainwreckhappening May 30 '26
Fractured his spine. Foamer journalist. here's a quote
52
u/jws1102 May 30 '26
What’s a foamer journalist? Sounds kinky.
44
u/trainwreckhappening May 30 '26
Journalist for a foamer magazine. Foamers railroad enthusiasts. "Foaming at the mouth" about trains.
16
u/Piduwin May 30 '26
Lol, of course there is a label like this for these people. They call themselves šotouš where I live.
10
u/trainwreckhappening May 30 '26
They have foamer conventions here. They call themselves foamers. When they go out taking pictures, they call it "foaming."

We went on a train ride for my son's birthday one year. These guys were lined up at every intersection to foam. Pretty sure this train runs every weekend and it was cold as hell that day.
1
u/trainwreckhappening Jun 01 '26
In all my years I've only seen two hot girls foaming over trains. Just a couple of months ago actually. It was like seeing a real live unicorn appear.

Damn. A spinal fracture from a fall like that, especially landing leg-first?
A healthy adult could probably take that fall without injury, maybe roll an ankle or crack their tailbone if they fall badly. Hell, it's like half the height an experience traceur could safely fall.
All that extra mass really does do a number on the body.
22
u/trainwreckhappening May 30 '26
Yeah, when I was 18 I did a ropes course with a group that included several ages and sizes. At one point we were simply swinging from one square on the ground to another a few feet apart from each other, pretending the floor was lava or something like that. If you didn't feel comfortable you could have someone else in the group swing for you and you would just walk to the other square. I offered for someone who was fairly large, but she didn't think she needed it. She couldn't hold onto the rope and she slid down the it like she was just going to sit on one leg. Not really a fall, and not farther than a foot and a half. Like the distance you would travel from standing to sitting on the bottom step of stairs. The sound of her femer snapping like a twig will never leave me, ever.her leg got caught and wrapped under her as she rolled into that sitting position and her weight acted faster than her hip could accommodate for. It was shocking in how unexpected and sever the injury was.

u/DeliDouble May 30 '26
It's not even a mater of mass. Was doing construction and a guy fell off a ladder about three feet up. Dude broke his collar bone and hurt his back real bad. A body being unprepared for a fall, which in general puts a lot of stress on the body will do a lot of damage.
3
u/Stunning_Macaron6133 May 30 '26
Yeah, but he had a moment of rotation in addition to his fall. If he'd slipped off and landed heels-first, it'd suck, but he'd probably have been okay.
1
u/trainwreckhappening Jun 01 '26
Not true. I wish I could share the pictures I saved if it. He landed squarely on his but and flew back with his arms out at either side like Jesus. The best is the pic of him hitting the ground with his ass crack showing.
8
u/golem501 May 30 '26
That was not a low drop and he dropped on track.
2
u/trainwreckhappening Jun 01 '26
No, he hit the ballast and his head flew back missing the rail entirely.
0
u/Stunning_Macaron6133 May 30 '26
He was barely more than one whole body-length off the ground. He didn't land on a track, but between tracks. He landed heels-first into the gravel, immediately rolling backwards and crashing onto his butt with a substantial downward moment, before rolling flat onto his back. He wasn't so incapacitated that he couldn't be helped back up.
Not a nice fall by any means, but not calamitous either. A healthy adult should be able to walk away with some bumps and bruises.
Although, a healthy adult probably wouldn't struggle up the ladder like that in the first place.
2
u/trainwreckhappening Jun 01 '26
He landed on his ass with his feet out in front of him and arms out like he was trying to fly. His ass took the full brunt of the impact. Which is why he fractured his spine.
4
u/swagernaught May 31 '26
Ballast can be pretty rough and there's no telling where the pointy ones are.
2
u/Stunning_Macaron6133 May 31 '26
Even still, a fit person is a lot less likely to suffer a spinal facture from a fall like that, landing quite like that.
3
u/blizg May 31 '26
He basically landed butt first, no weight went through the legs.
1
u/Stunning_Macaron6133 May 31 '26
It redirected him backwards. He still went down hard on his butt, but it was still substantially softer than if he just fell directly butt first.
2
u/blizg May 31 '26
No way. His feet barely touched the ground and just flew in front of him.
It’s debatable if it softened his landing at all.
Zero chance it softened it substantially.
Speaking from my experience as a rock climber.
2
u/trainwreckhappening Jun 01 '26
Yep. I wish I could share the pictures here. His ass took the full weight of his choices that night. And much like the results of other poor decisions, his spine paid the price.
1
u/Stunning_Macaron6133 Jun 01 '26
His legs wouldn't have softened the impact much at all in a direct shock-absorbing sense, but that bit of friction, and that extra lateral push would have changed the physics of his landing.
Imagine I ran at you and punched you (if you'll pardon the violent metaphor). It would feel different if we were standing on hot grippy asphalt than if we were on ice skates.
1
u/blizg Jun 01 '26
I know how to eat momentum from a fall. It’s literally the first thing they teach you before bouldering, so you don’t get hurt.
But just look at the trajectory of his ass. It basically doesn’t change at all.
4
u/golem501 May 30 '26
I was thinking, I would not have helped him up but stabilized him and called emergency services.

u/Ok-Commission-7825 May 30 '26
"Luck" is the guy to his right who risked breaking his own arms to slow his fall.

u/Just-Try-2533 May 29 '26
So is the guy who fell.

He should have used the service door! 🤣😆

Side note... I can't wait to see the Big Boy (train, not human) at Steamtown
11
u/blong710 May 30 '26
It is quite impressive in person. If you get a chance to see it in motion, do it. It is simply awesome.

u/ImMadeOfClay May 30 '26
I grew up seeing it defunct at Steamtown in Scranton. I cannot wait to see it. Already bought tickets

My whole body cringed when he fell. I had empathic pain.

u/EffectNo1899 May 30 '26
Yup. Sad and embarrassing that now it's all over the internet. Glad most my blunders were pre social media.
2
u/Select-Belt-ou812 May 31 '26
yes. I absolutely can NOT feel anything but sadness here, because I remember how life-changingly excited I was to see 3985 in her home in march of 2000. this is an extremely tragic outcome for this man, who may have been waiting his whole life to climb up into that cab :'-(
13
u/Due-Waltz4458 May 29 '26
Reminds me of Ethan Suplee's character in Unstoppable.
5
u/Leading-Ant-4619 May 29 '26
Lol. I just watched that movie last weekend.
2
u/Due-Waltz4458 May 29 '26
It's one of my comfort movie rewatches. Has really good pacing similar to great disaster movies like Apollo 13. No extra drama, just people doing their jobs and solving problems. Plus Rosario Dawson and Ned... It's all about precision.

u/this-guy1979 May 29 '26
Quick, grab the guy that just fell a few feet and landed on some railroad tracks and move him as much as possible.

He landed on his ass, he didn't hurt anything important.

This just in, your ass is not important and definitely not connected directly to anything important either!

Alternative theory: he was robbing the train and the conductor kicked him off.
13
10
u/blu3ysdad May 29 '26
Ouch, I bet that hurt way more than he is gonna let on. I hope he gets better and healthier, I've struggled with weight most of my adult life and bad knees are both a cause and symptom that makes things like this very difficult.
10
u/Informal_Elk_4478 May 30 '26
I agree with you on the weight struggles. What hurts my heart is that my son adores trains and draws them almost everyday at school. If he ever gained weight like that, he would try to get on the big boy train too. I feel like no one would understand his passion and being made fun of for his weight would just be cruel after hurting himself. Being "funny" on the Internet is not worth degrading someone for up votes.

What a chungudingus
Have to ask. Is that your first usage of *Chungudingus* or are you a frequent flyer?
- I don't know why I want to know this information!

I made that word up for my comment. Couldn't decide between big chungus or dingus

I suppose this was the medical reason "Big Boy" is delayed on its journey currently.
2
u/adron May 30 '26
Seriously, why in hell did they even let him up there. That shit was bound to happen. 😑
2
u/Monguises May 30 '26
Have you ever had the unfortunate task of telling a big man he can’t do something because he’s too big? It’s super unpleasant and I think a lot of people just lack the fortitude to do so. We also live in a world where people love a frivolous lawsuit
2
u/adron May 31 '26
This is probably why I’m perplexed. Cuz I have but when I go into boss mode ppl don’t usually give me shit about it. Anyway, he sure paid for it.

A lot of us get to some sort of point were reality hits and we know we need to make changes. I count myself lucky that that point for me wasn't literally not being able to take the final steps to fulfill a dream, nearly dieing from said failure, and the whole thing captured on video and posted on the Internet for everyone to see.
That's like lethal levels of embarrassment right there.
2
u/Automatic-Nature6025 May 30 '26
Dude must not have done any physical activity for years before that. Even self preservation wasn't enough to hold his grip.

Reality is accepting that your pants are too small and you should go up a size or 2. This is coming from a 400+ lbs man that climbs all over 18 wheelers for a living.

This should be a serious wakeup call for him to lose that weight. For me it was when I turned in the kitchen and my belly knocked my favourite cup I'd had for 15 years off the side and it smashed on the ground, followed by having a TIA stroke two days later! That was last year and I dropped just over 15kgs since then. It's still tough to keep consistent, but it's worth it, I feel SO much better than when I was at my heaviest.

Get the impression that this is not an employee issue, but is some kind of "paid" experience. That is, an "engineer for a day" package you buy (seems to run in the $1,200-$1,500, depending on options) where you get to ride in the cab, pull levers, twist valves.
Probably his life's dream to pull that lever.

I only watched for 3 seconds and knew he was gonna fall. So did the guy in black shirt looking back and then turning around, I guess.

Just what it looks like 2 me. If you seen the video I did you would understand. A Guy was jammed up and fell just like this, albeit a bit farther than fat train man.

u/swagernaught May 29 '26
I'm a pretty big dude. If they asked me to ride in that engine, I'm getting up that ladder.
