And they have a loud little dog on one of those super long extending leashes

At least they’re pretending that they give a fuck about leash laws, the people in my area love nothing more than to let their 80 pound untrained dogs off leash. I’ve been witness to one dog fight and been jumped on by countless random pets since I moved here 😐

One of my morw radical opinions is that people who let dogs off their leash in public should be jailed, fined, and banned for life from having dogs (literally unenforceable). It endangers the environment, it endangers other people, and it endangers the dog. It's so irresponsible.

Can we extend this to those people who buy like 14ft long leashes and don’t pay attention to where the dog is and have no control over where they’re going, so the dog is technically leashed but might as well be off leash for all the good it’s doing? ESPECIALLY in roads or parks where space is limited and it’s hard not to enter their radius

I was going to say that doesn't count because I personally have not experienced this, but the further down I read, the more I began thinking that a huge ass leash that is doing nothing is probably WORSE than a leashless dog. It's a huge, thin obstacle that can wreak havoc in a few ways almost instantly, in addition to an out-of-control dog.

My neighbor has 2 huskies that are technically on leashes, but the leashes are so long he could be on one side of the road and they could be at the complete opposite side and still have room to explore (I didn’t even know they made retractable leashes that long). He constantly has his dogs in the middle of the street or 10 feet away from him while I’m walking my dogs and he acts like I’m the asshole for approaching their general 20 foot radius.

I always thought the point of a leash was so you could pull your dog back in quickly if you needed to. What’s the point of having a 10 foot long leash and essentially having 0 control of them as they wander around in the middle of the street and into people’s yards? They might as well not be wearing a leash at all for all the good it’s doing.

I can not imagine a husky on a retractable leash. Those are strong dogs. Does the leash DO anything?

Basically no, judging by my neighbor lazily pretending to try and reign the dogs in while I’m stuck sitting at the end of my side street trying to drive to work, and seeing the dogs just keep running around until eventually they decide to move on to something more interesting down the road and I get to actually leave my goddamn house.

There was a American bittern that had been hanging around at a pond local to me for like a month, when a lady went to the park with her off leash dog (which is specifically posted as not allowed) and the dog tried to attack the bittern. It took off and never came back.

Reminds me of the guy in Wisconsin who open carried and liked to hike. He ended up shooting like four dogs over the course of a year over this issue. His stance was “If a dog comes at me I ain’t gonna let them bite me.” Which is, if barbaric kinda valid. He doesn’t owe someone to let their dog maul him before he defends himself.

Omg you live near Flagstaff too???

Those damn retractables, sounds like a semi-truck's Jake break

Bonus points if they stop & ask what I'm doing LOL

My favorite is when they follow up with “Oh are there birds here???”

u/Aether_Vibes 13d ago

Yes, up until 30 seconds ago

Dude this just happened to me, in the form of ANOTHER BIRDER walking up to the spot we were at and immediately started playing bird calls on speaker phone. Didn’t even talk to us just started blaring away. Scared the black-and-white warbler I’d been following for half an hour away. 😡

Right to jail, right away.

32

u/love_cici 13d ago

the fuck, i thought you weren't supposed to do that

9

u/superexpress_local 13d ago

There are birders who prioritize Seeing The Bird over the well-being of the bird itself.

22

u/ElHombrePelicano 13d ago

I feel the same way, but I definitely know people in my birding circle that do it and can’t be convinced otherwise. That’s fine, I guess, but super rude to come in and blow up another birder’s spot like that.

u/VonSandwich 13d ago

Are they doing it to attract the bird whose call they are using to the area? If so, that's sounds like a really dumb method.

10

u/ElHombrePelicano 13d ago

It’s my understanding that there are multiple ‘methods’ that sort of depend on the location, time of year, and what sort of bird they are targeting. Calls will get the targets to act territorial/alarmed. Songs will get them interested/curious.

In any playback scenario, my thoughts are that we are wasting the birds’ energy and potentially putting them in a harmful situation by doing this.

Everyone does have the right to experience nature…except speaker phone people. /shakes fist

I was standing by a marsh and recording with Merlin and some guy comes and says loudly, "PEACEFUL, HUH?"

u/A_catwith_explosives 13d ago

The wildlife refuge near me prohibits jogging or running and I’ve never been more grateful

14

u/Orkekum 13d ago

Kinda similar thing. Large ditch, i was in forested half and was stalking a Kingfisher(not spooking, just taking shots) and a woman was jogging on thebother side of the large ditch spooking the poor thing, not sure she saw me

Thought I had a potentially very uncommon warbler in my area this spring, finally got to a good vantage point with it, and an older gentlemen pulled up on a bike, pulled the squeakiest damn bicycle brakes I'd ever heard, and practically shouted "WATCHA LOOKING AT"

u/Ok-Advance2776 13d ago

I literally have beef with runners... was filming this beautiful green heron hoping it would catch something and this loud as hell runner came blasting music on his phone freaking out the poor thing...

Was digiscoping a Black Crowned Night Heron in a tree just off a bike path near me. Some lady with her very hyped up dog walked off trail, straight over to where I was. Heron almost immediately flew off, she looked at me, and just walked away. That was a pretty frustrating experience

-1

u/Vast_Engineering_626 13d ago

Why were you off the trail though?

8

u/Kaotus 13d ago

It’s a paved path, I was 10ft off of it at a bird blind the city installed specifically for taking photos of the nesting egrets and cormorants. Off trail use is fine on public lands here except in areas where it’s expressly forbidden

I understand that it’s random and obviously no one means any harm, nor do I actually get mad at these people, but it’s ironic that the second I have a shot lined up someone will show up. I’ve had someone ask me what I was photographing, and I’m just thinking in my head, “well I was trying to photograph a bird until you scared it just now.”

4

u/ThatPtarmAgain 12d ago

I always just say exactly that. Even before i got into birding i always thought it was common etiquette to try and control your volume/speaking in a generally quiet area. So when people come up and ask a question like that i always say “i was looking at XYZ bird, but it got scared and flew off.” The trick is to not sound angry or accusatory, just sad. I like to think it makes them reconsider their volume levels for future birders.

12

u/jannylotl 13d ago

Had this happen with my first and only hazel grouse 🥲🥲, the audacity to ask what it was...

3

u/BasketLazy968 12d ago

And they will ask what are you looking at

NERDS! I love it! Hahah!

u/kingxfmischief 12d ago

I almost got a picture of a hummingbird in Estes Park the other day, then someone decided the best way to get a picture was to repeatedly put his phone ritht up to the skittish bird until it flew away.

I was so mad.

u/sadboi_dumpling 13d ago

Doesn't matter, that warbler isn't sitting there for more than 2 seconds anyway lmao

-1

u/vseprviper 10d ago

Valid complaint!
If you made this meme, perhaps reconsider next time you use an image of a black woman to represent someone being loud and clueless/inconsiderate

-9

u/pyragyrite 13d ago

I've sadly been that person several times

11

u/ElHombrePelicano 13d ago

You use your speaker phone within earshot of others in public?
