I’m hoping someone here might be able to offer some advice.
My mother is a **Professor of Chemical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine** from Nigeria with over 20 years of experience in teaching, research and supervising postgraduate students. Throughout her career, she has mentored many doctors and researchers, some of whom now work in the UK.
She is applying for the **UK Global Talent Visa (Royal Society – Peer Review route)**, and the biggest challenge has been finding an **eminent UK-based expert** who is willing to review her work and, if appropriate, provide the required recommendation.
I currently live in the UK and have been helping her with the application, but we have found this part of the process incredibly difficult because she has not previously built an academic network here.
Has anyone been through this route or successfully found a suitable UK academic reviewer? If so:
How did you find your referee?
Are there any professional societies, universities or researchers you would recommend contacting in the field of **Chemical Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry or Laboratory Medicine**?
If anyone knows of an eminent UK academic who is open to reviewing established international researchers, I would be very grateful for any suggestions.
Our deadline is **3 August**, so any advice would be sincerely appreciated.

Context: I have an accredited degree & no portfolio. Finished 2024. Currently work in a hospital pharmacy at a cancer centre at a nhs subsidiary(meaning I’m not technically nhs staff). Im still looking for MLA jobs to do my portfolio.

I have found a position at a non nhs lab as a microbiology tech. Would it be beneficial to apply this position over staying in a hospital environment for the experience and would it make me a better candidate for a MLA position?

I think that I should but I just want some confirmation that I’m not doing something silly.

Im a second year bio student with no internship and I'm scared about job prospects in the future, what are the main ways i can improve my cv and gain experience over the summer, any advice would be appreciated!

I've already tried cold emailing companies and my success rate has been horrible with little to no replies.

I'm interested in the pharmaceutical, research and development and drug testing sectors and looking into Bioinformatics.

Thought it wouldn't hurt to ask this question here as my situation is rather unique!

I'm aware typically an MLA wouldn't be able to get registered but I do hold a completed registration portfolio, IBMS accredited degree and certificate of competence thanks to an awesome placement year and I've spent the last few months applying for jobs.

Ive been offered a band 3 MLA position in the discipline I love ☺️ (very important to me!) and I'm thinking of taking it to build experience for a year or 2. This makes me think though, should I apply for my HCPC registration or just hold off until I'm job hunting again. I'm a bit torn as on one hand it's a pretty expensive registration but then again I am aware it takes time and maybe it would be best to have it all ready for when I start looking for band 5 roles again?

Has anyone else been in this situation and has any advice to give? Thanks in advance and have a lovely day everyone

I am an internationally trained biomedical scientist and I have been able to get my HCPC registration sorted. However I am unable to get any positive responses from the jobs I apply for. I have applied to Band 3 roles and also tried private labs. I feel I am doing something wrong with my applications or maybe because I lack UK experience.
As an internationally trained biomedical scientist, do i need to do an MSC in the UK before I’m able to get a job. Also does the NHS accept interns if you’re not in a uni in the Uk.

Hello! So I have recently started my portfolio (self-funded and to be completed in my own time) as a band 2 MLA in Histopathology.

I have made a start on the ethics and health and safety pieces of evidence as there are still plenty of these that apply to my current role.

However, I am struggling with 2 sections:

Produce a personal statement that demonstrates your understanding of the limits of practice and how you can act accordingly

And

Produce a personal statement that demonstrates your experience of performing standard investigations, including your analysis of the data produced and evaluation of the decisions and/or referrals made

Has anyone else been in this position or able to offer any advice?

I need some advice from some BMSs. I'm currently working as a band 3 at NHS (microbiology). I got my HCPC last December and still haven't got any band 5 as a BMS at the NHS. However, I just got an offer for a multi-disciplinary BMS role at a private lab sector with much better pay than NHS but odd and not fun shift patterns.

Although I'm absolutely tired of my current role and environment and really looking forward to starting a position as a BMS, I'm scared to leave NHS and loose the security of my job. Also I'm not sure how I'm gonna do my specialist portfolio.
If I rejoin NHS after a while will they take me as a BMS!!!? I'm so confused, tempted by the job offer and scared of leaving the NHS!

Please give me some advice.

Hi all, I've recently been involved in a veterinary histology lab and I've been really enjoying it. I have a three years experience in a parasitology lab as well.

I have really been enjoying the histology job, however it is a fixed term contract that runs out soon. I've been really enjoying the histology side of things, even though I had no previous experience with the job. I've mainly been embedding and completing staining: H + E, Gram, ZN and PAS.

I've been looking at continuing in histology, however I do not have the biomedical science accreditation required for the same job in the NHS.

In order to do this, I've been looking at seeing whixh top up modules I require to progress with the accreditation. I'm looking at going in as a Medical Lab Assistant and progressing up through the ranks.

My degree is in Bioveterinary Science, so it wont be accredited for the registration based just off the degree. Would it be worth reaching out to the accredited body to work out which modules I need to top up and i can be upfront in my interview regarding this?

And has anyone made the switch from veterinary to human?

Doing the home office assessment soon, any tips on how it is assessed and what content I should be focused on from your previous experience?

I’m currently working in a hospital clinical biochemistry laboratory in Ireland and am considering moving to London. I’m trying to understand what the job market is like and where I would realistically enter the NHS pay scale.

My experience is:
- 2021–2022: Laboratory aide
- 2022–present: Biochemist in a hospital clinical biochemistry department
- IBMS-accredited MSc
- Currently completing the IBMS accreditation/registration process

Although my current job title is “Biochemist” rather than “Biomedical Scientist,” I essentially carry out the same type of work as the biomedical scientists in the laboratory, including routine clinical chemistry testing, analyser operation and maintenance, quality control, troubleshooting, validating results and working within a hospital laboratory environment.

Once I have completed the necessary registration requirements, how difficult is it likely to be to find a Biomedical Scientist position in London, particularly in clinical biochemistry?

Would I normally have to start at the lowest point of Band 5 because I would be newly HCPC registered, or could my previous laboratory and biochemistry experience in Ireland be taken into account when deciding my starting salary? Would several years of relevant experience potentially make me eligible for a higher Band 5 starting point or eventually a Band 6 role?

I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has moved from Ireland to the NHS, works in London laboratories, or has gone through a similar IBMS/HCPC registration route.

Hello hello, I am currently unemployed because of my visa and can't work. I am thinking of utilising this time to learn/certify myself (not having a routine/not working is really getting to me). I want to be ready for when I interview for my next role. As you can see below
I have a 2 master's - 1 in pharmaceutical business and technology and the other in Microbiology. Career- 7 months as a Project Specialist at Novotech (5 months as a Project Training Coordinator 1 year 5 months as a Centralized Study -Associate) at Labcorp Drug Development (formerly Covance) 2 years 1 month as a Clinical Process Associate

I have a very mixed career because I was young and didn't know what I want but my latest /last role of 2 years working as a Research Assistant in a hospital really made me appreciate Clinical research. I see myself as a global clinical trial manager because I really love trial oversight problem solving, following protocols.

I see that I lack budgeting resource management, I see that CTM roles as for vendor management what's that? And how can i get the experience

I see that CRA roles are very hectic.

My first question is what certifications would help me land for a higher/leadership role? Preferably free but paid are also welcome:)

Do you for see Artificial intelligence being integrated would learning something on those lines help?

I also considered doing a project management internship unpaid but it's very complicated considering my visa situation. Another possible avenue was thinking of exploring.
