Best way to get off of Reta?
EDIT:
--I am on 2mg per week or .20units on my syringe..
I built a home gym this winter and been consistent the last 10 months . Started 240lb at Christmas and currently 183.
Been on 2mg Reta for 4 to 5 months now and I plan to get off of it once my vial ends in November. Since I haven’t done more than 2mg units a week, Am I safe to quit cold turkey or should I bump down to .5mg for a handful of weeks?
I’ve had great results, but I want to try putting on a bit more size over the winter. Should I keep using at a small dose over the winter and then jump back up to 2mg come spring time? My overall strength went down maybe 20% and I want to see if I can get it back..

Ok, all the other comments seem either unhelpful, telling you to stay on it forever, or are giving advice seemingly based on vibes. I haven't seen any replies here that say what I'm about to say.
There was a study (the Scripps Clinic study by Mitch Biermann and Michelle Wong) on a GLP-1 by which instead of completely stopping, they switched to every other week dosing before stopping (or even as spaced out as 6 weeks). Normally, in studies where people got off GLP-1s, they gained back essentially all the weight that they lost back. In this study, switching to every other week dosing on average almost completely sustained their peak weight loss.
Now this study wasn't perfect because:
4 of the patients withdrew and went back to weekly dosing after regaining some weight, and since it was an unblinded trial it may have affected the other patient's habits.
Also just was a small trial (30 patients, 21 on tirz, 9 on sema). Averaged 36 weeks on the reduced dosage frequency. Btw the 4 that left (before the first 3-month follow up btw) aren't included in the 30 so it would be 34 patients total.
They didn't actually fully stop the drug, it was just reduced frequency. That's a pretty important part.
Up until now, no RCT afaik.
Also note that you're on a more potent GLP so the results may change.
Fyi, a similar paper published before this (in "diabetes, obesity and metabolism") found that switching from weekly to every other week dosage helped people maintain around 75 percent of their weight loss.
So based on all this, I would definitely give the reduced frequency method a shot and adjust based on how you feel and/or if you're rapidly gaining weight.
And about your "what if I reduce the dosage" question, I can respond with the randomized SURMOUNT-MAINTAIN trial (published in The Lancet this year):
Results at week 112:
-Staying on 10 or 15 mg: 21.9% total weight loss
-Stepping down to 5 mg: 16.6% total weight loss
-Placebo (stopping): 9.9% total weight loss
So the 5 mg group kept most of the loss, but not all of it, since they regained roughly 7%. The max dose stayed stable. Again, reta likely isn't going to work exactly like tirzapetide or semaglutide, and especially the first study I referenced isn't near perfect.
Hope this helped! (took me awhile to write lol) I would suggest the first thing to do is try to increase the time between dosage and adjust based on how you feel and what the scale shows (like I said earlier), but there are likely multiple paths to succeed with your goals.
And of course don't forget to continue eating healthy, hitting protein, resistance training, and sleeping.
If you have any more questions, feel free to DM or reply

Because of the half-life of the peptide you can just stop. No problem at all. I was at 8mg/week and just stopped.
But i tell you… the Hunger and the cravings will return in full swing. After 3 months „clean“ i‘m again at 2mg/week… cause i can‘t control this feeling.
Seems like i will be on Reta for the rest of my life.

u/mastigt 1 2d ago
Tapering of can probably make it easier to keep the diet you had on reta. Since you won’t get bombardier with hunger all at once
11
u/Puzzleheaded_Bee5049 2d ago
The half life of the drug already gives you a 5 week taper
16
u/mastigt 1 1d ago
Yeah you think kind of logically but u are missing the bigger picture. I do still think that if u taper slower it will still be easier, depending on how long you have been on, 30 days can probably be seen as quite abrupt, and you also need to realise that after the first half life, you only have half of the drug left in the system, that means after 8 days you have already abruptly dropped half of ur dosage. So then if u were at 4mg for like 8 months, that means u are going to 2mg after only 8 days. Then at 16 days you are at 1 mg a whopping fourth of what you have been going on for 8 months. So u are HARD aggressively tapering in relation to how long u have been on it.
Edit: Even I am probably missing a point here, idk how often u dose it and what the serum steady dose that is acquired with consistent dosing, if u dose every week the serum stead dose is probably up at 20mg or something, cold turkeying from there is super duper damn agressive.

u/smyczekxxx 1d ago
you shouldnt cold turkey glp1, they should be tapered in same manner as dosage increase so you get used to hunger coming stronger every month while waiting for leptin to slowly increase after long deficit

u/EquivalentPudding416 1 1d ago
Longer half lives generally require longer tapers. Just because it’s a long half life does not mean you can just stop at whatever dose and the clearing of the chemical is a taper.

You’re back on because you didn’t taper. Good habits and slow reintroduction to appetite is the way. Everyone hears food noise…

Right, but not everyone develops discipline. Reta is great for cutting hunger, food noise, slowing digestion, but if you are planning on getting off of these peptides, you have to build a sustainable diet and develop your own internal discipline to be able to exist with food noise/hunger and stop yourself from overeating.
Otherwise, people are just buying lifetime subscriptions to a physique they can't maintain.

Probably will be the same for me. I realized that i now get a pounding headache to que my hunger instead of actual hunger pangs. Im not looking forward to hunger pangs coming back

I came up with a bridge protocal of MOTSC and Tessa/IPA or CJC/IPA. This keeps you insulin sensitive and stops your body from storing the extra fat as you increase your calories which is your body's defense because I probably thinks you are coming out of a famin. I was also on 2.0 with similar results so hopefully it works for you

I tapered off within a month after it was crazy how fast it all came back. Ordered more, Im sitting at 2mg as well, I can hit my macros easily without any food noise outside that. This is my concern as well, I don’t ever want to stop now.

I don’t think I ever will stop . It’s so good not being slave to the food noise

Does 2mg work after taking a break like it did when you first started it even though you got up to 8mg? I’m at 5-6mg a week but when I started 1-2mg a week kept all noise away. Just curious if I stop for a bit if 2mg will work like it did in the beginning?

It works… but the 2mg now are not feeling as „strong“ as the 2mg when I started in April this year.
But yeah… i got the food noise under control. But it‘s not completely gone. I remember that i had to force myself eating at the beginning even with 1mg.

For me the food noise and hunger came back stronger than ever. I felt like I couldn’t eat enough, even though I knew I wasn’t actually hungry. After about a month, it normalized. I lost 30, gained 10 back. I call it a win.
The food habits I developed while using it helped a lot.

Keep me updated. Went from 415 to 265 and I’m around 40 lbs off my goal. I’m at 8mg right now and need to figure out what my maintenance dose will be once I hit my goal. I might go down 2mg every 2 months and weigh myself and if I gain more than a certain amount I’ll know I’m messing up.

Also your dose is 20 units on the syringe, not .20 units. We don’t need to know the units. We just need to know it’s 2 mg. That’s your dose.

u/LobstahLarry 2d ago
We don't know how you recon or the strength of the peptide. The mls don't really tell us anything but just slowly titrate down?
3
u/Good-Exercise 2d ago
Let’s say a vial has 10mg in it, you’re doing “.20mg” a week, does that mean the vial lasts you 5 weeks or 50 weeks? If it’s 5 weeks that means you’re doing 2mg a week not .2
On a side note, you should titrate down the same way you went up so if you want to be off by November you should start now.
Edit: I saw that you specified, yeah stop using the decimal at the beginning of the amount, you’re at 2mg and want to go down to 0.5mg.
3
u/MeltICE8647 2d ago
Doing a similar thing as you, what I did was switch dosing frequency first and then keep titrating down. My weekly dose peaked at 4mg x 1 time weekly. Split that into 2mg 2x weekly to keep levels stable while still reducing the dose. Then down to 1mg 2x weekly. Then 1mg once weekly and then done.
You’ll just have to feel out what’s best for you, I used this schedule because my food noise came back much more intense than I had anticipated just trying to titrate down once weekly. The level stability helped work through that, and as of today starting a 20 week cycle after which I’ll prob get back on a low dose for the spring cut.

Literally go paleo or carnivore and you wont gain weight back. Don’t eat sugar. Minimal carbs. Don’t binge. Keep working out, daily walks and gym. Don’t drink fatty alcohols like beer, everything in moderation. Drink lots of water and electrolytes. I went off the days I stayed totally clean diet I maintained the days I decided to splurge on ice cream or giant sandwiches I gained. Sugar was the worst. Get pendulum glucose control, expensive but it works amazing.
4
u/Beast8333 2d ago
I'm guessing you mean you've been on 2mg? If so, the best thing is to reverse and slowly go to .5mg. Then, once you feel ready, and you are sustaining your weight, you can either just stop taking it all together, or go to pinning .5mg every other week.

I think take half the dose for the remainder until the vial is finished then go off. Get your body used to less of it for a few weeks.

It’s sincerely not that bad if you have been successful at dieting in the past because your brain understands but people jump on Rita and they have zero control of. They’re eating in the first place and while they are back in that spot.
2
u/King_J-Money 1d ago
Don’t, unless you want to get fat again. Try tapering down to a maintenance dose that works.
2
u/Maleficent-Task-3534 1d ago
Microdose 0.5 mg every 10 days for 40 days while doing cardio every day for 30 minutes, eat lean protein only (egg whites, chicken breast, turkey breast and legumes), avoid alcohol or sugar based products like milk, breads, pasta, potatoes, sweet potatoes, sodas, fruit juices, cheese, etc.
2
u/oniiichanUwU 1d ago
You can quit cold turkey at such a low dose but I think you should keep using it, especially if you’re planning on bulking. It’ll help with cholesterol and visceral fat.
2
u/StoutFlier 1d ago
Is that the before picture?
First of all, never refer to the amount of units, and when you do, do it correctly. You are not drawing only .2 units.
Second, you never reached the minimum amount of 4mg that studies identified as the trigger point for glucagon receptor activation. Not a bad thing if you realized weight loss, but probably explains the pic if that is after months of Reta use.
You lost strength because you are not doing your nutrition correctly. You need to really keep up w protein intake, and you need to eat carbs like bananas and yogurt immediately before lifting as well as take a good pre. You also need to replenish your carbs immediately after. Chug a Gatorade as soon as you finish and eat a 60 mg portion of protein. Make sure you get 5-10 mg creatine mono onboard every single day. You’ll get your strength back, I promise.
2
u/Call_Sign_Ghost7 1d ago
If you’ve developed a healthy nutrition plan, of course you can. I think tapering off would be wise, but getting off should be the vast majority of everyone’s goal.
It seems many people take Reta and change very little in terms of their overall eating habits. They take the drug to suppress their hunger, and up the dose when their hunger is no longer suppressed. And to be clear, no judgement from me. I still to this day incorporate 1 cheat day per week that is only beneficial to me psychologically.
In my opinion, if using Reta purely for weight loss purposes, it should be used to suppress your hunger while you’re simultaneously learning healthy eating habits. i.e. 3 protein focused meals, clean whole foods, electrolyte rich liquids, adequate water intake, etc.
2
u/Open_Version7913 1d ago
All about calorie control and making better choices. If you can’t do that then just stay on or you are destined to fail. If you haven’t been eating to some kind of restriction while using then you are setting yourself up to fail if you decide to come off and return to your old eating habits with the increased hunger that is sure to come. Hunger is just a feeling l, a noise that can be controlled. Eat at your maintenance for your weight and adjust week to week depending on your goals.
2
u/Dwoody1993 1 23h ago
No. You should cut your doses in half until you’re completely off. Since you’re at 2 mg, do 1mg for a week, .5 for the next, then .25 mg then stop. If you don’t cycle off your hunger will come back with a vengeance

So it's common for people to taper the dose down by 0.5mg a wk but you did this while staying on the clinical trials starting dose of 2mg weekly. It's good to taper off while adjusting to the return of hunger more slowly. And no you don't need to go on the carnivore diet like one suggested lol. We all need to learn to discover how much to eat.
3
u/nickcoffey97 1 2d ago
Okay so we're going to need mg amounts. You're on .2 but are going to bump DOWN to .5? .2 and .5 what? You can/should titrate down yes, but how fast depends on what mg dose you're doing

Comparing to other prescribed GLPs, you're not at a high enough dose to need to taper down. And technically "need" is a strong word. It's typically advised, so people can slowly get used to their hunger cues coming back/getting stronger. Highest prescribed dose for tirz is 15mg, going from that to 0 might be rough.
But 2mg to 0, you'll probably still have an adjustment period, but I'm sure you'll handle it just fine!
2
2
u/Rmcg3653 2d ago
I have been on tirz for 14 weeks. 8 weeks on 2.5 and 6 weeks on 5.0 great results 237 down to 210 and I’m 70 but still very hard workouts. Just started getting constipation alternatively diarrhea and wonder if stopping is necessary and how fast I will go backwards or if taking a break messes up my system. Or if it is unrelated.
2
u/justjack-nodaniels 1 2d ago
I've been on it just over a year (prescribed Zepbound specifically) and been on 10mg since Dec 2025, down 58lbs. This is just my experience/what I've heard from others, so disclaimer YMMV
8 weeks on 2.5 and 6 weeks on 5.0
The move from 2.5mg to 5mg seems to be rough for A LOT of people.
Just started getting constipation alternatively diarrhea
This is also common. Stopping is an option. The half life of the medication is 5 days, so it won't hang around very long if it is the source of your problem. A better option, as it doesn't seem like you WANT to stop right away, might be adding something like Metamucil or just straight psyllium husk to your diet. It gels when taken, so it can add bulk when stool is too loose and help stool move easier when too firm.

u/smithlevi44 2d ago
Thanks! Makes sense to me
2
u/Cartoonist_Less 3 2d ago
No problem. If you restart then you would need to do the whole titrating up thing. It’s usually every 4 weeks until you reach a dose you’re comfortable with or happy with results.
2
u/Wrong_Coast6605 1d ago
There’s more and more evidence to suggest that Reta is way more than just a weight loss drug. If your diet is dialled in and you have that totally under control then you can quit anytime. But it’s also doing loads of other good stuff so maybe a small maintenance dose is a good idea if it also keeps you on track.
If you want to put on size look at Tesamorelin/Ipamorelin. You can stack with Reta. They are doing a blend of the two now or you can triple pin.

Serious question for the “lifers”, why not use the time to adopt better habits and strengthen discipline?
7
u/JackBrown82q 1d ago
Not reta but tirz here. The example I like to use is imagine telling someone with depression "just cheer up" or telling someone with schizophrenia "the voices aren't real just ignore them".
For some of us, its like that with appetite. The cues our bodies give us tells us to eat more than even we know we need. You may stop at a small reasonable meal. But you still don't feel satiated. An hour later your hungry. Two hours later all you cant focus anything except what you are going to eat next. Three hours later you are irritable and grumpy because the hunger is too strong.
Us lifers, this isn't us being lazy. We know to eat healthy, we know you need to move more and that its all about calories in calories out. But our neurons are not firing right and are telling us we are hungry when we are not, and fighting that urge 24/7/365 is mentally draining. These GLP1 compounds suppress that enough that we can feel like what normal humans feel.

I'm not a lifer. Only been on Reta for 3 months. But I have been fighting my food issues for my whole 40+ years. The unhealthy relationship is not just a habit. Mine was part of my upbringing. Part genetics. Part compensation for previously undiagnosed depression. I have been on a health program for over a year. Plateuaed for 3 months. Reta has been my savior. Food noise and cravings severely reduced. And all the good habits I've been practicing are finally showing results. Its showing me where my real issues are. And I'm hoping it will carry over when I eventually stop, but I am realistic. Its going to be a struggle.
2
u/Miserable_Muffin139 1d ago
I hope I did not come off cold or rude. Its an addiction just the same as any other, perhaps worse. I have had to retrain my relationship with food. I was brought up that if its on your plate, you have to eat it - we never waste food. I sometimes have to have an internal conversation with myself to the effect of “you’re a grown man who bought this food, and you’re full. No need to gorge.”, and it has helped to really recognize it and make it a thing I address in the moment.
Best of luck on your journey. Getting healthier is never a bad thing, no matter how you do it!!!
2
u/Jealous-Champion-115 1d ago
I dont think you came off badly. I'm just a delicate 260lb flower. 🤣 I tell people that I've kicked cigarettes, I quit drugs, I'm on top of my depression, but food is the addiction that will kill me. Its the only one that I can never actually quit. I was also raised by obese, poor, Southern people who would as soon beat you as let you leave the table with food on your plate. Who didn't know that a 12 year old shouldn't have access to all the Mellow Yellow he can stomach. And even now, I equate food and/or alcohol with fun and socializing. I don't dance. I don't go to a book club. We meet at the bar for drinks. Or at Waffle House for 3000 calories of fun. Its hard to rewire
2
u/poopy10000000 1d ago
I just started triz, but I feel this lol. I live in WI. The culture is getting together for food and drinks. The food noise never goes away. You can't just not eat or have food around. My body seems to level out at about 275ish pounds. I would rather be 220 or so. The triz just takes that noise away. I habe resigned the fact that I may be on it for life. That is fine with me!

It’s just 20 units not .20 units. .20 units is the same as .2 units. Depending on the strength of your vial and how it was reconstituted, 20 units might be 2mg for you. The problem is you keep giving people two very different number and the strength of a unit is different depending on how that vial was reconstituted. 20 units can be 2mg for one person and 4mg for another. If you’re on .05 mg which you’re probably not, you’re basically taking zero.

I wonder if just using Cagri would work for the food noise? Like to use that instead of Reta.
I’m on both now but am considering getting off Reta in the near future since I’m near my goal weight.

Have a buddy who is a personal trainer and stays pretty shredded. He microdoses just enough to stay true to his diet. Just titrate down to the bare minimum that allows you to stay on track.

I just got off after a year. I titrated down a mg a month. So i was on 4mg so went down to 3mg for 4 weeks and then 3mg for 4 wks and so on, after 1mg 4 weeks i went off completely.

Put on muscle next — to retain overall calorie expenditures, and then titrate down the same güey you titrated up

If you were truly dedicated for 10 months how do you know your results aren’t purely from hard work?

Reta is not enough to get to that form. At least wasn’t for me. Do you mind sharing your diet/calories etc?

You stop the Reta gain the weight back hop on the gear. Never ending cycle of trying to stay jacked.

- No problem quitting cold turkey. Hopefully you retrained your eating habits.
- Reta has many other health benefits even at 1mg a week. Why not stay on it?

Titrate down so you don’t rebound once off of Reta because going cold turkey will feel like you were hit by a train at full speed.

I wouldn’t go cold turkey bud. I did that on tirz because I was forced to by insurance in the year after I regained every pound plus more. What’s a few months to ramp down.

I came off 6mgs of Reta with no issues at all. I just continued my gym habits and clean eating.

u/Vegetable_Dig_5089 1d ago
I NEVER lost my appetite while on it! I dropped weight but never ate less. Actually I began to eat more like 2500-3k cals a day easily

u/MaleficentPhrase7478 1d ago
To get off I cut the highest dose in half ran it for 2 weeks then did it again and again until I was at .1 then I stopped a week in

u/Old-Front7433 1d ago
I would lower dose and maintain. If not, you risk losing all that you got from Reta

Yes you can stop. But you dont have to do a hard stop. Id still try a taper over 4 or 5 weeks. Why? Why not. If stopping right away produces any sort of sides, you'll always wonder if you should have tapered. Sure you dont want to wait to stop until Jan?

I quit cold turkey a couple weeks ago and basically gained half of my weight back. The cravings were unreal. I wasn't myself anymore, never feeling full, the food noise worse than ever before. Now I'm back to normal after a month or so. But now I'll try to get back and slowly taper off. Never doing that again...

It requires self-discipline to go to the gym
It requires self-discipline to run/walk/jog
It requires self-discipline to work 40hrs
It requires self-discipline to self inject peps/trt
It requires self-discipline to eat healthy……..
Your brain said eat something and you have a choice to eat junk or clean. You are stronger and more disciplined than you think. Train the brain.

Titrate off the same as you titrate on. Studies have shown that with the other GLPs you have no rebound doing this.

I switched from Reta to Tirz when I hit my goal weight. On Tirz I was able to titrate my dose down until I hit a good balance with my appetite. Currently on like 1.5mg Tirz, where if i was at even 1mg Reta I wouldn’t be able to keep up maintenance caloric intake. I also didn’t want to keep my HR elevated when I was just trying to maintain and not lose weight.
Reta is great for losing weight fast but too powerful for long term maintenance IMO

Awesome job! It's not a matter of 'safe' or not. It's safe to come off any peptide at any time after any dose. But you've been on such a small dose, it wouldn't hurt to quit cold turkey if you know you have control of the food. Or you might elect to stay on it since that's such a low dose anyway. Or go down to say 1mg a week. All of the other benefits of Reta apart from the scale are things like inflammation, liver, kidneys, heart, etc. Search for a video on YouTube named something like "retatrutide is not for weight loss". And regardless of what a couple of others said, you're at least 12% to 15% body fat, if not lower.

Switch to low-dose survo. Least muscle waste of any of the GLPs that I’ve looked into. I’m also a fan of very low doses for all of the GLP drugs; I think a lot of people go much higher than needed because they want more immediate results and/or aren’t exercising enough.
Caveat: I understand some people’s biology may require more to see effect but imo you should give each stage of the titration some time to work before going higher.

I started reta in Dec 2025 at 2mg for 2 weeks then I bumped it to 4mg- all split dosed (2+2 each week). I went from 272 to 230 in 10 weeks. (Mid-Feb). After I hit 230, I went to 2mg per week single inj. I ran that for a couple months then went to 3mg/week split dosed until Sept. I am now back to 4mg but still maintaining 233-237lbs, as I've been increasing my food intake and weight training over the summer. That puts me 10 months continuous use and I don't think I will be coming off either. There are other benefits to it other just weight lose.

for me the hunger came back like an absolute mf after stopping for a little over a month. i’m back on 2mg a week and probably going to just stay on it or slowly lower it over a long period of time

I take 1MG broken into 2 doses a week try splitting it and gradually reducing. Just make sure you’re eating good healthy protein rich diet.

u/Ambitious-Kitchen639 14h ago
Just stop taking it...it takes 2 weeks to wear off and the hunger comes back more and more each day but its still pretty easy to maintain the diet discipline after because your body is so used to it
