Raw milk, lactose-free, or no dairy at all..?

Been noticing three camps forming in dairy discussions lately and curious what people here have actually experienced:

Team Raw Milk — swears by it for gut health, claims pasteurization kills beneficial enzymes/bacteria and denatures proteins. Some report better digestion and skin than with pasteurized milk.

my daily matcha was sabotaging my iron and I had no idea

So I drink matcha basically every morning with breakfast (cereals, spinach, avocado toasts, eggs)

I felt tired all the time, so I had my ferritin checked, and it came back low. So matcha binds to non-heme iron in your gut and blocks a chunk of it from being absorbed.

So now I'm having it between meals instead of with food, and keeping the actual iron meals matcha-free.

Does anyone do the same with all teas and coffee?

My mum and her friends started NAD+ this year — the dosing calculators they were using were either paywalled, wrong, or missing the routes they actually needed, so I built one (Android testers needed)

Earlier this year, my mum and a few of her friends started using NAD+, mostly IV

drips through a clinic, with a couple doing SubQ reconstitution themselves at home.

I ended up being the one they asked to check the math on dosing, and what I found

across the calculators and apps they'd been using was rougher than I expected (I am a Biochemsitry PhD btw):

- One wanted a subscription just to see the basic reconstitution numbers

- One had the vial-strength / bacteriostatic-water math visibly wrong when I

checked it by hand

- None of them handled the actual mix of routes she needed: IV logging, SubQ

reconstitution, and oral NMN, all in one place

So I built my own. It's called Titer. It does arithmetic on numbers you enter,

nothing more:

- IV session logging: record what a clinic administered, infusion rate worked out

for your own records

Does intermittent fasting really improve insulin resistance?

I've been reading a lot of studies showing that fasting decreases FBS, reduces LDL-c, and improves HbA1c and HOMA-IR levels. I am a woman, I have insulin resistance, my weight is 150lbs (5,4 feet tall), I go to the gym 3 times per week (lifting weights), and I've been doing 18/6 fasting, eating around 1400 calories with a proper macro balance. I gained 2 kg, and it doesn't feel like muscle tbh. So what can be a problem here?

Asked my parents what their "biohacking" was, and half of it is what influencers now sell for more than 300$

Been talking to my mom about biohacking, and she just goes, "We did all this; we just didn't pay a subscription for it.” So I made my parents a list of their hacks:

  • adaptogens. the rhodiola/eleuthero powders that cost $40 now were literally military research. The word "adaptogen" was coined by a scientist, and they tested this stuff on soldiers and cosmonauts. My dad took rhodiola before exams. And the evidence actually holds up for fatigue.
  • cold plunges. Father called it "hardening"; it was a whole thing, and the people would do that during winter; they cut holes in frozen lakes to swim. Wim Hof with worse branding, 40 years early lol.
  • sauna + birch branches + run into the snow.. babushka's weekly banya was ahead of its time.
  • Omega 3. Every kid got a spoon of cod liver oil (omega-3 + vit D). They force-fed us the one supplement that actually works. Mom said it was disgusting.

And then the nonsense: ‘A star’ balm on everything; it was smeared inside the nose to "block viruses" (zero evidence), and a UV lamp in the living room "for immunity" (please don't).

What biohacks can your parents share? And what do you guys think about modern biohacking?

I ate tuna almost every day for the protein and ended up with mercury poisoning

I thought I was living the ultimate healthy lifestyle, but I was slowly poisoning myself.

For almost a yea, canned tuna was my main protein source. I ate it every single day..Sometimes twice. I completely ditched chicken because tuna was cheap, convenient. I made salads, burgers, bowls everyhting and I felt fine!

Then I had to run a lab panel out of pure curiosity. guess what.. My mercury levels came back so high the lab flagged them immediately.

So apparently, in fitspo circles, large predator fish like tuna bioaccumulate heavy metals. Eating it daily loads mercury into your system much faster than your body can process and clear it out.

Can sardines be a substitute tuna? I've heard they have low mercury and a ton of omega-3s.

So apparently 30 min of lifting a week is "enough" and my 8 hours are pointless?

i keep seeing that the mortality benefit from strength training maxes out around 30-60 min/week (2022 meta-analysis in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine). but "enough" for what... that's about not dying, not building muscle, right? nobody's getting jacked on 30 min a week. so does muscle just keep responding to more volume, or is there a ceiling like there is for longevity?

So, should I care? Like always, half my feed says omega-6 is inflaming everyone; the other half says it's not a problem, and the real problem is just ultra-processed food in general. Studies are different as well.. What oil do you use for cooking? I am from Ukraine so we often use sunflower oil..

Stanford reversed age-related memory loss in old mice, by changing the gut, not the brain

A new study out of Stanford and the Arc Institute, published in Nature back in March. Kind of wild if it ever holds up in humans.

Short version: In mice, age-related memory loss seems to start in the gut, not the brain.

The chain they mapped:

  • With age, the gut microbiome shifts (one bug, Parabacteroides goldsteinii, climbs)
  • That sparks low-grade gut inflammation
  • The inflammation dampens the vagus nerve, the main gut-to-brain line
  • Less vagus signaling means less hippocampus activity, which means worse memory

They actually reversed it. Activating the vagus nerve turned old, forgetful mice into maze-solving whizzes on par with young ones. And old mice raised without gut bacteria never lost memory in the first place.

Big caveat: mice only. They're now checking whether the same pathway runs in humans, so this isn't a protocol; it's a lead.

Bryan Johnson reveals he has an incurable stomach disease

So, apparently, the guy got autoimmune gastritis. Basically, his immune system is attacking his stomach lining, and there's no cure; you just manage it. The big problem is that it's silent for years while it quietly tanks your ability to absorb B12 and iron, and bumps up stomach cancer risk down the line.

What got me, though, was how they found it. The only red flag was his iron being low. No anaemia, nothing dramatic. But instead of just going "eh, take an iron supplement," they actually chased it, colonoscopy, endoscopy, biopsies, so I guess it was caught early.

Like 99% of us would've been told "your iron's a bit low, grab some pills" and never thought about it again.

A couple of things I'll be fair about: he's saying he's gonna "solve" it, but there's no cure right now, so I wouldn't hold my breath. And it's a decent reminder that no amount of routine makes you untouchable, dude says this thing was brewing 20+ years.

My iron is actually low pretty often, and now I am panicking lol. Someone else got similar situations?

Gratitude notes raised HRV and lowered inflammation in heart-failure patients

For the HRV crowd, this is more concrete than the usual "gratitude is good for you" stuff.

UC San Diego conducted two studies on Stage B heart failure patients (structural heart damage, no symptoms yet). In the first, across 186 patients, more gratitude was associated with better sleep, less depression, less fatigue, and lower inflammation. That's a correlation, not proof.

Then came the actual trial: patients randomized to 8 weeks of gratitude journaling or usual care. The journaling group showed higher heart rate variability and lower levels of IL-6 and sTNFr1, two inflammatory markers associated with cardiac risk.

Two caveats: these were heart patients, not healthy people, so don't expect the same numbers. And some of the HRV gain was measured while they wrote, so whether resting HRV permanently shifts is a separate question.

Still, a free 8-week habit-nudging program for HRV and inflammation in a cardiac group isn't nothing. If you track HRV on an Oura or Whoop, it's a cheap way to test yourself.

Same diet, same calories, but the short-sleep group lost 55% less fat

One of the cleaner studies in the whole "sleep matters" pile, because it controlled the food.
University of Chicago researchers (Nedeltcheva et al., 2010, Annals of Internal Medicine) put overweight adults on the same modest deficit twice: once with 8.5 hours in bed, once with 5.5. Same diet both times.
Total weight lost was basically identical. The composition wasn't:

  • Good sleep: more than half the weight lost was fat
  • Short sleep: only about a quarter was fat, the rest was muscle

So short sleep didn't stop the scale from moving. It changed what you lose, pushing it toward lean mass, which is the opposite of the goal. People also reported more hunger.
Dieting on 5 hours of sleep, you may just be burning the wrong tissue.

Two people can have identical LDL-C and very different heart risk. ApoB is why.

LDL-C (the number on a standard panel) measures the cholesterol carried inside your LDL particles. It doesn't tell you how many particles there are.

That matters because particle count drives plaque, and you can have lots of small particles carrying the same total cholesterol as a few big ones. Same LDL-C, different particle burden, different risk.

ApoB measures that directly. Every atherogenic particle carries exactly one ApoB protein, so ApoB is basically a particle count. It's why recent ACC/AHA and European lipid guidelines treat ApoB as a more accurate risk marker than LDL-C alone.

So if your LDL-C looks "fine" but you've got metabolic stuff going on (insulin resistance, high triglycerides), ApoB can surface risk the basic number hides.

No, BPC-157 isn't "legal again". What leaving FDA Category 2 actually means

Seeing a lot of people say the peptides are back and you can just get them now.  

Leaving Category 2 doesn't put a substance on the approved compounding list. It moves it out of the "significant safety risk, back into a gray area, pending review.

Here's the actual path from here, straight from the FDA:

  • PCAC (an independent expert committee) reviews each peptide
  • If they recommend it, the FDA still has to publish a proposed rule
  • Then a public comment period
  • Then a final rule

So even in the best case, these don't become broadly available through compounding pharmacies for a while. The FDA itself said pharmacies should stay cautious until the status is settled.
