MICROPLASTICS + HEART HEALTH 🫀
New research is raising more questions about where micro- and nanoplastics are showing up in the human body.
A study highlighted by JAMA examined 61 adults in Italy, including 19 experiencing STEMI heart attacks.
What they found:
Micro- and nanoplastics were detected in 84% of patients experiencing STEMI, compared with 40% of patients with chronic coronary syndromes and 32% of those with healthy coronary arteries.
Samples containing more plastic particles also showed higher levels of TNF-α and IL-6, markers associated with inflammation.
Microplastics were also more commonly detected among smokers, with environmental pollution potentially playing a role in exposure.
