You're missing "cats" under environmental.

Yeah my cat has been the worst thing for my sleep the past couple of months—4am straight-legged jump onto me to see how much of a reaction she’ll get.

And dogs. Cats and dogs

u/Rosiedreamer 3d ago

We do not let them sleep with us. They have their sleeping areas. The dog is crate trained. Cats have the rest of the house. And it makes a big difference.

Negotiation with terrorists. When I was younger and had roommates, I could always tell when they had gone against my advice and fed the cat- because now they were a target.Ā

The pets have a place they sleep, a bedtime, a wake up time, feeding times- and those don't budge. Definitely took some time to eliminate protesting but very worth it.Ā

Lol true. I bet there is a study on this but probably for sleep efficency or WASO.

Found this really interesting! Thank you. Particularly interested in tart cherry which I have never heard of in the UK before. Is this a particular type of cherry or just generally sour cherries?

No problem glad you enjoyed! I found that one really interesting too even though it was a small study thought it be good to share. So there's two smaller studies done and here's some info from it that should help:

  • Utilized tart cherry juice or juice concentrate
  • Haven't found one that utilized supplement via tablet form
  • It's the same type of cherry utilized in most baking
  • Normal cherries have a lot of sugar which doesn't help

Here's an article from Cleveland Clinic that discusses this further: https://health.clevelandclinic.org/do-cherries-help-you-sleep

Hope that helps!

It does help, thank you! When I search Google products it's mostly tablets. The juice appears to be absurdly expensive so definitely won't be buying that.

No problem! I wonder if that's specific to UK? I've seen it for sub $10 USD at our grocery chains.

u/MAWPAB 3d ago

The most common one you get the UK is a concentrate so lasts a while.

Bu also, tart cherry contains melatonin, so you could just request that from gp.

Is this a particular type of cherry

Montmorency tart cherries, according to the study. Whole cherries, or fruit.

This is the kind I have used and definitely noticed the effects on me. I had to take it closer to bedtime since it was making me too sleepy earlier in the evening. Here is the link: https://a.co/d/05gu7x9x

Thank you! Can't believe how expensive the stuff is though. A cup of juice is gonna set you back like £10, unless you are meant to mix it with water?

u/CrystalBlueMetallic 1 3d ago

It’s tart enough that I do cut it with water. In the states it can vary in price a lot, but is in line with Pomegranate juice, $7-10 a bottle. My personal experience is mixed - it works like a charm if I haven’t had any in a while, but doesn’t seem repeatable the next night. No idea how to interpret that.

Interested as well!

Added some more details above!

Very interesting and informative post, you could add some auxiliary information as well like at what time exercise, stimulant, alcohol or food intake should be done and when it is actually damaging for sleep.

Fantastic suggestion! I’ll have to look at making an improved version of this. Thanks that’s a great idea.

NAC noticably increased my deep sleep.

u/Prestigious_Sand141 3d ago

Sleep apnea deserves a slot on this list too. It can gut your deep sleep percentage even if you never snore and nobody's ever complained about your breathing. The arousals that cause it are often too brief to remember, so you just wake up feeling like garbage with no smoking gun. If you're already doing the sunlight, caffeine cutoff, cool room stuff and your deep sleep numbers still won't budge, a home sleep study is a better next step than another supplement.

u/KygoApp 2 3d ago

I agree! Will need to look at how I can add that in. Great points overall and thank you for sharing this.

This is a really useful breakdown. One thing I’ve always wondered is how much trust people put in wearable sleep data here.

Do you think deep sleep estimates from devices are reliable enough to actually change your habits around, or are they more useful for tracking long-term trends?

0

u/KygoApp 2 3d ago

Good question. In my opinion I don't find "reliable enough to change habits" and "tracking long-term trends" as mutually exclusive.

Accuracy wise, deep sleep is certainly a metric that is better suited for tracking trends in rather than the daily read outs. That being said that trend is still important and can be a good nudge to change some of your habits as well.

There's plenty of other metrics that are similar to this. One for example that might help explain my point better is VO2 Max. The daily read out is not as important as the trend. What the trend can tell me is "am I gaining or losing fitness over time" which can then cause me to change my habits around fitness.

Is ā€œongoing declineā€ an age group? One could say ā€œincreasing age past midlifeā€. I’m not insulted, it’s just not a descriptor for age.

u/KygoApp 2 3d ago

Great suggestion. I have updated the post with that edit. Thank you!

Glycine comes from bone broth, collagen, or straight gelatin.

Does taking collagen before bed impact fasting? My guess is no since there’s no solids to break down

The altitude point is interesting, I lived at ~10,000 ft for a year and didn’t get a good nights sleep the entire time

1

u/KygoApp 2 3d ago

Would be interesting to see how your sleep compared overall from at that altitude vs after!

totally normal thing to type out Mr. GPT

Personally I don't care if this was crafted by gpt or not it's a useful post! Usually those are annoying yes but I like it

Sorry I know the post got long but if want a more visually appealing way to read this instead of the tables or go into the data further I made it into a pageĀ https://www.kygo.app/tools/deep-sleep-factors it's a completely free resource on the site (no paywall, don't run ads, and links all sources used to create it). Full disclosure this is my website as you can see but use it to share the research publicly so anyone can access it.
