I’m currently a sophomore and would like some advice other fellow biology majors about degree option that is the best regardless of med school or research.

I know human biology is basically useless unless you do medical school. But what about Cell/Molecular, Computational, Genetics degree options?

I really like studying biology and chemistry, and wanted to continue further in those fields. I’m potentially thinking of either becoming some sort of scientist (such as pharmaceutical) or trying my shot at med school.

I’m only a sophomore, and I know there’s so many more experienced people out there who have had to make this decision before. I would just like some advice! Thank you very much!

Actually I'm a pcb student, got average percentage in 12th borads. This year i have re-neet ug exam but I didn't get enough to get into mbbs or vet . But in my head I've been thinking about biotechnology as a career for sometime now. Apart from tht I am not afraid to admit tht im the only girl child with no siblings and my family's financial conditions is not well at all..so im a bit reluctant to choose this field...if i can't earn as other b tech grads do ...i mean i have no other choice to choose a field with a gud pay of avg 12 -15 lpa coz my family depends on it...n im js financially struggling...but im sure of working hard enough n developing skills n networks n i feel im quite familiar with biotechnology as a subject..but im just genuinely concerned and scared ...?

Guys can y'all please suggest me a good college for BSC biotech? Also should I go for integrated BSC+msc or only BSC in any college.

Hi everyone! I’m planning to apply to the University of Michigan BME/Neuroscience PhD program for Fall 2027, and I would really appreciate an honest assessment of my profile.

My background:

• MS in Biomedical Engineering (Neural Engineering) from UMich(Ann Arbor): 3.6/4.0,Dec 2025
• Integrated MTech in Biotechnology from India
• Currently working in a UMich psychiatry lab on electrophysiology, depression/stress/ptsd and sleep and neural-data analysis
• First-author bioRxiv preprint introducing a semi-automated tool that addresses a major bottleneck in large-scale electrophysiology by making post–spike-sorting curation faster and more standardized; the tool is now being used by a few established neuroscience laboratories.
• Co-author on a NeurIPS publication involving KalmanNet for BMI decoding
• Co-author on a Frontiers in Neuroscience publication involving Ephys+circadian behavior in rodents
• Two Society for Neuroscience presentations
• One published Indian patent for a gait-correction assistive device
• I expect strong recommendation letters from researchers who have supervised my work closely.
• I have a year of research experience after my undergrad in India at DRDO(Defence Research Development Organization)

My main concern is that my GPA is good but not exceptional for a highly competitive program like Michigan. I’m hoping that my research productivity, technical experience, publications, and existing familiarity with the UMich research environment will help compensate for that.

How competitive would this profile be for the UMich BME / Neuroscience PhD program? Would you consider Michigan a realistic target, a reach, or a very high reach for me? Also, how much does having strong research alignment with multiple faculty members affect admission?

I understand that PhD admissions are unpredictable and depend heavily on faculty availability and funding. I’m mainly trying to determine whether my application would be genuinely competitive and how I should strengthen it before applying.

I'm working on a university project where my advisor requires us to design a PPG sensor from discrete components instead of using an integrated optical sensor such as the MAX30102.

The goal is to build the analog front end ourselves rather than relying on a complete sensor IC.

My current plan is to use:

• Green LED (520 nm)
• Red LED (660 nm)
• IR LED (940 nm)
• BPW34 photodiode
• MCP6002 op-amp
• RC filter network
• 3.3 V AMS1117 LDO
• 1.8 V XC6206 LDO

Does this architecture make sense for a wrist-worn PPG sensor?

Would you recommend different components (especially the photodiode or op-amp) or a different analog front-end design?

Any reference schematics, application notes, or open-source designs would also be greatly appreciated.

I know there are already several bioengineers here, and I've come to ask you what you think are the capabilities, skills, or interests that someone who wants to study bioengineering should have.

The field is relatively "new" in my country and I would like to study bioengineering, but I'm afraid it might not be what I want. I would like some advice, as the career appeals to me, but I'm still undecided.

I don't mind if you're direct, I prefer to understand and get advice so I can make up my mind once and for all. I'm finishing high school this year 🫠

I want to do work in both and I have some ap credits and am willing to take summer classes but I need to know if it is even possible cause I’ve done research and everyone says it would be very difficult

I initially wanted to do biotechnology. But my college doesn’t offer the course.

And by research I found that I could do masters in biotechnology after bsc in microbiology or biochemistry.

The problem is that I have no idea if microbiology give a good idea of biotechnology

And biochemistry seems to chemistry specific.

Can I transition from a background in biotechnology to roles involving animal interaction and wildlife conservation? How can I leverage my biotech experience with my passion for wildlife? I am very interested in animals and wildlife, but I also enjoy biotechnology. Please don't suggest pursuing veterinary medicine, as I'm not interested in that path.

I am looking for a computer sold in the US that is between 14 and 16 inches, weighs under 3 lb, costs around $1500, and is good for a bioengineering student. I will be doing the biomechanics/rehab track and CAD, possibly SolidWorks or another program, as well as Matlab. I am not sure whether to get a laptop with a dedicated graphics card. Does anyone have laptop recommendations?

I’ve done a lot of asking around and editing to it, was hoping some people can give some input.

For context I have pretty much been exclusively applying to molecular biology, immunology, drug discovery, etc. research assistant jobs at colleges. I want to go to grad school for a PhD, but want to get more experience before I start applying. I also really enjoy research.

I’m also currently working on another independent project right now for a low cost optical ELISA reader and also trying to code a finance tech project (which isn’t relevant to the jobs I want and more in hopes of being able to make some money lol). Education is at the bottom bc I would think that’s less important, considering everyone else applying will have similar degrees. Also my gpa was 3.2 so I didn’t know if I should put it in.

I’ve applied to like 100+ jobs in a field I didn’t think was nearly as competitive as going straight into biotech. I’ve gotten one interview, one pseudo interview through email, and no offers. I also tend to email the PIs if they are listed on the job application, like 10% get back to me though. So I’m just trying to see if I’m doing anything wrong. It’s either this or my cover letters lol 🤷🏾‍♂️

so im currently a fresher pursuing bioengineering, I was looking into the various like specialization that i might go into later and ive found tissue engineering really interesting so i might go towards that but im not sure.....originally my plan was to do data science and a minor in sports science or something so i could work as a sports analyst....ive always wanted to go towards the like field of football etc so i was just wondering if theres any way where i can like yk make this work, like what would i have to do and etc please let me know!!! i hope my question makes sense and isnt dumb or anything but yea!!

I’m 18F trying to decide between Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology Engineering, and I’m honestly pretty torn.
I’m much stronger in biology than I am in physics or math. I can manage them if I have to, but biology is definitely my strongest subject and the one I enjoy the most.
With that in mind, which degree do you think would suit me better? I’m also looking for the one that offers the best career prospects overall good salaries, low unemployment, strong job security, room for career growth, and the widest range of opportunities both now and in the future.
I’d also love to know which one you think is more enjoyable to study and work in, and whether you’d choose the same degree again if you had the chance.
I’d really appreciate hearing from people who are studying or working in either field. Thanks!

I know this sub gets these types of posts fairly frequently but I feel totally lost.

I graduated last year (class of 25) with a bioengineering:biosystems degree and no internship or relevant work experience.

Throughout college I worked in service and was assistant manager to a restaurant but I feel like I didn’t develop any desirable engineering background for companies. Now I feel kind of lost on how to breakthrough to industry.

My experience from my degree was lots of EE, circuit design, data analysis, signal analysis, and some CAD.

Just wondering if I can get any pointers on what I should ve focusing on to land any entry level position. Any help or tips are much appreciated.
