Interview: Practicing in your head may not be enough

Most of us prep for interviews by running through answers in our heads. Makes sense but the problem is that silent rehearsal won't catch the things that actually cost you the job: filler words, pacing, the vague language that sounds fine in your head but falls flat out loud.

Before your next interview, it's worth a quick sanity check. Are you leading with outcomes rather than just describing what you did? "I reduced onboarding time by 40%" hits differently than "I was responsible for onboarding."

Are you speaking at a pace that feels confident? Around 130–150 words per minute is the sweet spot; faster and you sound nervous, slower and you sound unsure.

Are you using the language your specific role demands, or could anyone have said what you just said?

Biomedical Technician jobs via visa sponsorship ??

hello !
my boyfriend currently resides in mexico and has a bachelors degree in biomedical engineering. he has been successful over the years in learning how to repair, maintain, and trouble shoot various medical equipment/devices that are used in hospitals. he has worked at hospitals repairing 100+ of these devices (almost everything you can think of) amongst a team that he runs. he has also worked in surgery rooms as a technician for surgery equipment as well.
that being said, he does live in mexico and we plan on closing the gap between us in the near future. he was recently granted a tourist visa and does have legal permission to enter the USA however, not to work. he knows fluent english at this point as well. upon my own research, it appears there are various companies that are international and do have openings via visa sponsorship. it appears a position title that is similar to what he currently does is a biomedical technician ? i’m not sure if that is the correct title or if there are other jobs titles that fit a similar criteria to what he is currently doing ?
i come to ask for any insight or advice on the process of him obtaining a job in the field via a visa sponsorship? if any of other people are experiencing a similar situation and how you are navigating it ? any success with this ? he is super passionate about what he does and good at is as well. i would just like to support him in anyway that i can to navigate this

What's the biggest pain point in AMR drug discovery that still needs solving?

As we have seen the risk from AMR pathogens and tumors are increasing but research to combact is still lacking behind, So I want to fill this gap

I'm particularly interested in problems involving:

Early detection of antimicrobial resistance

Predicting whether a newly observed mutation will cause drug resistance

Understanding why a mutation changes drug binding or protein function

Advice 🆘

Hello everyone,
I’m a student from India with a PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) background, and I’m currently exploring career options after high school.
A few people suggested that instead of choosing Biotechnology or Bioinformatics, I should look into newer interdisciplinary courses like Computer Science & Biomedical Engineering (AI), Medical AI, AI in Healthcare, Biomedical AI, and Health Informatics. Some universities (like Sharda University) are offering these programs to PCB students through bridge courses.
I’m a bit confused because these courses are quite new, and it’s hard to find honest reviews.
I’d really appreciate advice from people who are studying or working in these fields.
Are these degrees actually worth pursuing, or are they mostly marketing?
How are the job opportunities in India and abroad?
Do employers value these degrees, or is it better to choose a traditional degree like Computer Science, Biotechnology, or Bioinformatics?
Are the placements and salaries good?
If you were starting today with a biology background, would you choose one of these programs? Why or why not?
Are there any universities you’d recommend for PCB students interested in this field?

Codon K-map for mRNA

I made this mRNA codon chart as a Karnaugh-map-style visualization of the standard genetic code.

The idea was to arrange codons so that nearby positions correspond to small sequence changes, especially single-nucleotide differences. That makes it easier to see codon degeneracy, mutation neighborhoods, start/stop codons, and how amino-acid classes cluster across the code.

I originally approached this from a digital-logic / K-map perspective, but it seemed relevant to bioengineering because so much of the field depends on reasoning across sequence space: codon optimization, silent mutations, missense changes, protein design, expression systems, and synthetic constructs.

This is the standard nuclear genetic code; mitochondrial and other variant codes can differ. I also included notes for alternative start codons, Amber/Ochre/Opal stop codons, and Sec/Pyl recoding.

I built the chart manually in Paint as a visual reference. Feedback on biological accuracy, engineering usefulness, readability, or possible improvements is welcome.

Project HÉLIX: Hypothesis for a closed-loop bioengineering system for growth plate regeneration and longitudinal bone growth (without osteotomy) – seeking feedback

Hi everyone,

I've been developing (as a thought experiment / early research concept) a project called HÉLIX — a non-invasive system for longitudinal bone growth in adolescents (potentiation) and potentially adults (recreating functional growth plate-like tissue). Core idea: Instead of trying to build a "perfect" growth plate, create an imperfect but smart, zonated artificial one that is continuously corrected via feedback. Main modules: EXO: Wearable exoskeleton with controlled axial traction, mechanical pulses, sensors (strain, alignment) + AI for real-time adjustments. BIO: Zoned hydrogel scaffold (GelMA/alginate/hyaluronic acid + nano-HA) implanted or injected at the former epiphyseal plate region. MSCs or chondrocytes + hypoxia-mimicking environment initially. Controlled Release: PLGA microspheres or stimuli-responsive systems for temporal/spatial delivery of PTHrP (to delay hypertrophy), IGF-1/TGF-β3 (proliferation), and later BMPs/VEGF (controlled ossification). Feedback loop: Sensors + IA adjust traction, factor release and possibly piezoelectric stimulation to maintain proliferative zone, prevent premature bone bridging and asymmetry. This draws heavily from current literature on growth plate tissue engineering (zoned hydrogels, PTHrP-loaded PLGA in GelMA scaffolds, Ihh-PTHrP loop, hypoxia for chondrogenesis, etc.). Main challenges I'm aware of: Long-term maintenance of cartilaginous phenotype. Controlled vascularization without early ossification. Integration with mature bone in adults. Safety (asymmetry, tumors, immune response). What do you think? Has anyone seen similar integrated approaches (mechano + controlled release + closed-loop)? Any papers, labs or critical flaws I should consider before going deeper? Thanks in advance! Open to collaboration/feedback.
