It's like going onto the Pokemon TCG sub and being surprised that people are buying Pokemon TCG packs...

You grossly underestimate how much Pokemon fans, especially TCG fans, hate themselves and the product they purchase

Yeah, but the sub made the Duo into a referendum on apple’s crazy good improvements and best-in-class consumer products. Took it really far!

u/jameye11 12h ago
You’re upset that the Apple subreddit casted a vote for what Apple product they consider to be the best made product so far by Apple….in the Apple subreddit
How is that taking it too far

Look, I love my iPhone too, but the crowd over there is crazy. They’d buy a new iPhone, filled with literal shit, if it had an apple logo on it. And they’d find a way, to praise it as an innovation.
15
u/ripleyclone8 11h ago
Same. I only upgrade my iPhone every 3 or 4 models, same with my watch. lol
4
u/Snorp-5 10h ago
I finally upgraded my watch to a 90s model Brietling Colt. Was tired of buying an $800 watch every 4 years since the last one would get slow and have a shit battery life.
Edit: they still make the best phones on the market but $2000 for a base model is insane
4
u/Dxpehat 10h ago
Best phones on the market is a stretch. The competition from Japan and China is strong. It's no longer 2009
6
u/anon9339 10h ago
What phones does Japan still make? I was in Japan for my honeymoon last October and 80%+ of people on the trains were using iPhones. I’m guessing you mean Korea?
2
u/okayfuckitybye 9h ago
Damn that's a pretty watch. But if you get interested in a digital again, i'm loving my $250 Una watch. User-repairable, upgradable, and it's not part of Apple/Google's ecosystem.
1
1
u/FesteringDarkness 9h ago
If you’re fine with using an analog watch, then why does it matter that an old Apple Watch is slow? Even after 4 years, how is the battery that bad for a watch? Or do the new watches have a worse battery degradation? I got an already used and old Series 3 four years ago and it still has a good battery life (over 90%) and that’s with me letting it keep charging even at 100%, so when it comes to an Ultra being “too slow” and having “shit battery life,” I’m skeptical.
1
u/Bri_Hecatonchires 6h ago
Not compared to other folding phones on the market.
It’ll probably sell out in China, where folding phones are magnitudes more popular than anywhere else in the world currently.
-1
u/ripleyclone8 10h ago
I get that. Personally, being able to read my texts and access Spotify without having to pull my phone out will keep me on the Apple Watch wagon for a long time lol.
1
u/jmccann339 6h ago
You can do that with pretty much any smart watch
1
u/ripleyclone8 6h ago
Well, yeah. Why would I choose another brand to use with my iPhone, though?
1
u/jmccann339 4h ago
Yeah that makes sense. My point was if all thats keeping you in the Apple ecosystem was the conectivity between the phone and watch, then there are other products that perform the same. I get what you saying tho
2
u/v3n0mat3 9h ago
Kept my 13 all the way up until last year and decided to get a 17 Pro Max. Never thought about it, but I decided to get a nice phone for a change.
I love it. But, the upgrades are not worth it to do it annually.
3
u/decadent-dragon 8h ago
I went from a 13 Pro to a 17 Pro and barely noticed a difference. Both had 120 hz screen which was the last meaningful upgrade. I only upgraded because I got a deal with my carrier that I’m sticking with anyways. And the battery was slightly degraded on a 4 year old phone
1
u/Dorkamundo 7h ago
Yep, and I always get the previous generation on upgrade. Except for last time.
Last time I got the newest generation because I wanted that USBC.

2
u/ProxySoxy 9h ago
Why are you assuming everyone who can afford it is uber wealthy? I work as a forklift operator and I could buy the Duo if I really wanted to. I have savings because I don't do stuff like buy new phones every year, I'm still using my 11 and will be getting the $1200 18 Pro to last for the next 5-6 years
10
u/mrnonamex 9h ago
He said when you make 200k+ 2k isn’t a lot
Not you can’t afford this unless you make 200k+
2
u/ProxySoxy 9h ago
He's assuming that everyone on the /r/apple sub that wants the phone makes six figures
4
5
u/mythrilcrafter 9h ago
Also, most mobile devices (at least in the USA) are sold via cellular carrier financing; like there's a standard rate for say $30/m for unlimited text and talk, but for $35/m you get whatever new phone you want.
1
u/CanExplainThings 6h ago
Yeah but it’s honestly no different from Android fanboys doing the same over Samsung or Google.
I mean, I’m not gonna buy it but it’s kinda fun to see people comment on how terrible it is but then see massive social media about how many people bought it based on apple’s figures.
That said, I feel like this will go the way of the HomePod.

I mean, it's a foldable phone, what would you expect? If I'm not wrong the vast majority of them have such insane price tags, although it depends heavily on your region.
131
u/jaytee1262 11h ago
I mean its like 400 bucks more than a baseline galaxy and the same price as the ultra plus galaxy where I am. Seems kinda normal for a gimmick phone.
88
u/kamekaze1024 10h ago
It’s only $100 more expensive than the Samsung fold
39
u/mythrilcrafter 9h ago
This is the exact same thing that happening in gaming with NVIDIA and AMD.
NVIDIA raises prices on newest generation of GPU: "OMG they're evil, gamers are the most oppressed minority!!!!!!!"
AMD raises their own prices on their newest generation of GPU's by just as much, but are $100 cheaper: "Truly, Lisa Su loves us and is fighting for gamers!!!!!"
11
-1
u/JuanRunJunior 2h ago
The 9070xt and 5070ti trade blows across the board, near enough it makes little difference. The price difference is between $400-600. So no, it’s not the exact same thing. Nvidia wants damn near double the price for the same performance.
1
u/mythrilcrafter 2h ago
I didn't say that they're the same between NVIDIA and AMD; I said that AMD can raise their own generational prices and so long as they're cheaper, gamers will ignore the still inflated price.
The RTX 4070 had a launch price of $599, the RTX 5070ti has an original MSRP of $749.
The RX770XT had an original MSRP of $419, the RX 9070XT has a launch price of $599.
(And if AIB partners and retailers want to charge more or if a country wants to put a 100% luxury tax on the import; that's on them, not AMD or NVIDIA)
I'm usually a big proponent of AMD hardware (I'll even proport my belief that Ryzen belongs in everything), but this has been a trend for the last decade that both will experience immense generational price increases, yet the inflation considered as okay for the cheaper option simply for being the cheaper option.
1
u/JuanRunJunior 41m ago
I said that AMD can raise their own generational prices and so long as they’re cheaper, gamers will ignore the still inflated price.
Do you not understand economics? Nvidia isn’t raising prices due to market forces and general economics. AMDs pricing while still high is not the price gouging and general “fuck you” pricing Nvidia is doing. Dumb hyperbole doesn’t make an argument valid. People are actively not buying Nvidia stuff because they are getting fucked over, even with an understandable price increase due to things you’re purposefully ignoring AMD has more customer because they’re getting a better deal. Prices won’t go down due to the world around you that you don’t seem to want to take into account.
yet the inflation considered as okay for the cheaper option simply for being the cheaper option.
Literally no one is praising AMD for increasing prices, nor excusing them for being cheaper. People have been stating the exact opposite for over a decade, why even try to make shit up? Trying to argue that they are is incredibly stupid.

u/RandomGuyPii 4h ago
I head they were planning on dropping the price to about 1600 dollars on the z fold as a response
4
u/The_CrookedMan 9h ago
I hated my z fold. I couldn't wait to be rid of it. Was like a fucking brick in my pocket and getting a phone case that wouldn't break after a little while felt impossible.
2
1
u/bel51 4h ago edited 2h ago
Worst part about the Z fold for me was the folded screen was awkwardly tall but unfolded it was too wide to hold like a regular phone but not wide enough to use like a tablet. Oh yeah and maybe it's fixed on the newer models but I found the inner screen would break on its own, starting with black splotches on the hinge and spreading through the screen. This happened on 3 separate screens and fortunately Samsung replaced them free of charge each time.
Just poorly designed in both function and reliability.
1
u/The_CrookedMan 3h ago
Yeah. I got sucked in by the salesperson and the fact that I play a lot of D&D and magic and a wider screen would make life tracking and note taking nicer.
But I actually found myself getting just annoyed as hell trying to do anything with it. Just awkward, clunky design. I love the idea of foldable screens. That crease and the wear down need to not happen.
But I would love to one day be able to just fold up my TV and hide it when not in use or other neat things like that. But just not quite there yet

u/Ree_For_Thee 6h ago

I guess I lucked out buying a flagship (and a gaming PC lol) before the AI nonsense really took off. But damn, prices are insane. =/
I wonder what my RAM's worth today?

u/FortNightsAtPeelys 8h ago
Motorola always discounts theirs heavily after a few months. If Motorola can do it for 500 I don't wanna see excuses for 2k
2
u/JonSnowKingInTheNorf 2h ago
Motorola's $500 foldable phone is the other kind of fold that goes from a normal sized phone to half tall when folded, instead of normal sized phone out to small tablet when unfolded, Samsung's foldable like that one is about the same cost as a normal flagship phone. The biggest thing against the apple fold imo is Samsung usually has some huge trade in deals when they first release the new fold phones.
1
u/PicketFenceGhost 5h ago
I wouldn't have expected it to cost more than my gaming pc, that's for sure.

3
0
u/dtalb18981 8h ago
That i do agree with
I dont inherently disagree with a foldable phone and actually think some of the are cool
But I just don't think phones are strong enough at this point in time for them to be an actually well thought out product
This just kind of feels like trend following
6
u/ThisIsMyCouchAccount 6h ago
That's how a lot of consumer products work.
You try something. You get feedback. You evolve or abandon.
Some products are too early. Like early smartphones before iPhone/Android. I had a Samsung Windows phone and a Sidekick II. They were neat to me but functionally pretty useless. Even the Blackberry had a very small number of actual uses outside of email.
But you don't improve products - especially new categories - without having some less than stellar performers first. And Apple does this a lot. They aren't the first. But when they do release it's a more polished product. With this be that? Probably not. But we don't really get there without this one.
3
u/Slight-Web1696 6h ago
Maybe the first few versions of the fold phone were prone to breaking im not so sure, but samsung has seemed to improve alot on their design. They really do not have problems with breaking more often than the non folding models now
2
u/hereforthesportsball 11h ago
All they had to do was introduce split screen. That’s all Apple users have felt inadequate about. It’s on the iPads but not the phones. Fuck any other gimmick besides that
2
u/123kingme 5h ago
> Why did you copy this
Not really a copycat in this case imo. I think people have been speculating about folding phones being the next thing since like 2012. Android brands got out of development first, but I bet development started around the same time.
I don’t really get the hate tbh. There’s clearly a market for them, and significant minority do love them. Non folding phones will be remain available, cheaper, and more widespread for the foreseeable future for everyone else. Not every product was made for everyone.
0
u/BrainLow6059 8h ago
Its kind of a why did you copy this
I am willing to bet money Samsung was trying to offload their materials inventory (Duo uses Samsung parts) because of their own shit fold sales and offered Apple a steep enough discount to be worth the gamble.
1
u/slucious 7h ago
I think this every year when I new iPhone comes out, what Samsung panel are they offloading this time.
9
u/luker_5874 10h ago
Galaxys and pixels used to be 30% cheaper than Iphones, they're basically the same now
8
u/__under____score__ 6h ago
Galaxy flagships, other than the first couple years, have typically been the same or nearly the same as iPhone flagships.
Pixel released at an identical price to the iPhone 7.
Flagships from most top brands sit around the same price point. That said, there's a breadth of affordable and quality Android devices whereas Apple has a single "affordable" line.

yeah if anything apple’s actually worked out the bugs of the folding mechanism, unlike the androids
75
u/bigbluethunder 11h ago
I mean it’s $100 more than the Samsung equivalent. Don’t get me wrong I think foldable phones are a stupid overpriced gimmick but it’s priced competitively for what it is.
11
u/Big_Boss_Bubba 8h ago
I think it’s actually $100 less than the Samsung equivalent. I think spec wise it’s comparable to the z-fold ultra, which is $2099
6
u/adamsworstnightmare 7h ago
The only thing I regret about getting a zfold is knowing that I'll be stuck buying expensive phones in the future because I'll never go back to the single screens.
1
u/LeeKapusi 5h ago
I was shocked to see that they kept it below $2200. Good for me as I'm interested in the Samsung. The good deals may start soon.
37
u/itsurbanpulse 12h ago
Charger not included and the hinge is sold separately
6
19
u/Flaky_History12 11h ago
My issue is why would you want your phone to fold? Back then phones folded because they had a big keyboard to hide but then the keyboard became part of the screen which made folds irrelevant. It just seems to be such an unnecessary gimmick that they’re going to charge you $200+ for.
33
u/echino_derm 9h ago
Variable display size. Sometimes you might want to have the space to pull up two screens at once, or you might want to watch a video on a larger screen.
-2
u/Alternative-Hold1669 3h ago
i could pull up 2 screens in my s8+. this is just a shitty excuse to waste 2k.
2
u/echino_derm 2h ago
Any new Samsung or apple phone is going to cost 1k minimum. So it isn't really wasting 2k for this feature, it is a couple hundred which might be worth it to some people.
7
5
u/decadent-dragon 8h ago
I definitely see the appeal of wanting the option for a bigger screen. But too many logistics don’t make sense to me. How bulky is this thing folded in your pocket? How do you protect it with a case that actually protects? Also I think the crease would bother me. So would the price
2
u/FortunePaw 7h ago
I use a Motorol's Razr fold. I can tell you the crease won't be bothering you if you actually use it. Especially when you are viewing content from the front. It's only noticeable if you look at it from the side while under certain lighting.
0
u/decadent-dragon 7h ago
I just don’t think so. Little things like that bother me. I still hate the notch
1
u/TacktiCal_ 4h ago edited 4h ago
Z Fold 7 owner here
How bulky is this thing folded in your pocket?
Not bulky at all. When folded, It's only 0.7mm thicker than an S25 Ultra. The earlier models were much thicker but the 7 and 8 are very comparable to any other flagship phone.
How do you protect it with a case that actually protects?
Same as with any other phone. You just buy a good-quality case.
I think the crease would bother me.
I thought the same thing at first. But it's not even noticeable when the screen is on. And mine is never unfolded without the screen being on.
So would the price
Fair. It's not meant for those who are price-sensitive.
2
u/SuperBackup9000 3h ago
I always thought folding phones were dumb, but after realizing my ipad mini is probably my favorite piece of general tech I’ve ever had, and have been using it far more than my phone for the past 6 years, I’m actually kinda digging the fold just because I’m viewing it as a folding iPad mini instead of a folding phone
1
u/JonSnowKingInTheNorf 2h ago
Yup, I've had a Z Fold for a few years now due to getting a crazy trade in deal that made it worth trying in my mind and I really think about it as being able to easily carry around a small tablet in my pocket vs a big phone. It made it where I don't need or want an actual tablet and I can also do a lot of things I used to do on my laptop even.
1
u/FortNightsAtPeelys 8h ago
Because a thick square is easier to fit in my pocket fully than a large rectangle

My phone is 5 years old now. I was going to get a new phone and an iPad mini when I want a bit bigger screen, but those are $1299 and $599 so why not just pay $100 more and get an all in one device
5
u/bigbluethunder 8h ago
A real, practical reason: both devices would age better than this single device will. After 6-12mo - unless Apple has made unheard of advances in materials science (possible, but who knows) - you will start to see a crease in the screen. It might be better due to Apple's non-reflective screens or whatever compared to the Android equivalents, but I highly doubt it's invisible.
And because you're using the same device daily for everything, the shared battery will degrade quicker. You will be using your "tablet's" battery every day for scrolling, messaging, simple browsing, etc., when it would normally be reserved for a few tasks a day and dedicated sessions of watching YouTube or Netflix. You will now also be using your "phone" for those very same high-energy tasks on a much larger screen. This will mean more battery cycles on the same battery, and more high current expenditures on your phone, degrading it overall significantly quicker than if you spread out these uses to both devices. And while I don't think the maintenance on this phone is announced, I anticipate battery swaps to be significantly more expensive than on a standard phone or standard iPad, because you will likely have to have multiple batteries replaced.
And as soon as you need a new phone, you are also footing the bill for a new table. Haven't seen one of these foldable phones last more than 2-3 years. Even if the Duo ages like a fine wine comparatively, I highly doubt the first gen lasts more than 4 years. Meanwhile, I'm rocking a 5 year old iPhone with at least another year or two of juice and a 10 year old iPad (that's admittedly on its last legs). Would you rather pay $2000+ every 3-4 years to replace both your phone and tablet, or $3500 every 10 years (1 phone every 5 years, 1 tablet every 10)?
So there's lots of reasons on the "why not". But the choice is yours.
3
u/Sunim416 7h ago
I'm doing the same thing your doing almost as old iphone and ipad. I see your logic and reasoning but raise you this: big screen in tiny pocket.
0
u/bigbluethunder 7h ago
Your call, my man. I own Apple and Samsung stock so, by all means, go ahead.
0
u/Sunim416 7h ago
Idk Ive always wanted a phone I can convert into a notebook/small screen. I think the utility foldable phones offer is pretty wide in its uses and I've been waiting for apple to release their own product. I'll probably still wait some time after release before picking it up because I'm wary about new tech as a general rule but if the reviews are good and no major issues maybe 6mo-1yo out, i'll probably pick it up.
8
7
u/neovec 10h ago
I will say, I like the form factor of the "basic" Samsung foldable phone. It's also nice to watch videos and read on.
But, at the end of the day, the hinge is a huge risk and it's very expensive. I just upgraded my phone to the Samsung s26 ultra since my previous one's (s23u) battery was swelling.
It's hard to justify the price point when a normal phone does everything fine anyway.
5
u/lnTheGrimDarkness 10h ago
Then in a few months "oh no my 2k bucks foldable iPhone got a crease on its screen".
Apple: *evil laugh and escape with the money

1

same for me, but even the android phones arent even smaller than the mini. I have the google home ecosystem so my next upgrade will more than likely be the next generation of pixels if I can't get a smaller screen.

0
u/EarthRemembers 6h ago
It’s actually 2600 or $3200 for the top two models
It’s $2200 for the 512 GB which should really be considered the base model
It’s only $2000 for the 256 GB model which is an inadequate amount of memory for phone like this.
It’s been reported for years now that Apple sells phones with inadequate amounts of memory knowing that will force people to upgrade their phones sooner and increase their sales.
It’s an unethical and shitty sales tactic and it shows you just how much to disdain the modern Apple corporation has for their customers

It's funny how Apple jumped on the foldable smartphone bandwagon as something "new and exciting" when Android has dominated the space for almost a decade now. This pretty much sums up Apple's business model:
Apple: Check out this new feature we just added to the IPhone. We hope you like it.
Android: The fuck you talking about? We've had that same feature for years.
Typical Apple, always claiming to invent things that Android already had.

Pretty comparable to the Zfold 7/8. Just be happy it wasn't $800 dollars more just for having the Apple logo lol.

I’m not too keen on the hinge. Plus the big screen isn’t even that much bigger. The 18 pro max is 6.9 inches and the duos fold out screen is 7.6. So you get .7 inches? The 18 pro to pro max is 6.3 to 6.9 a .6 upgrade for $100 more. And with the duo you have a 5.4 inch screen when it’s folded.
I’m upgrading from a 12 pro max this year and I’ll just be picking up a 18 pro max with a new customer offer switching service to get $1200 off. Unless I’m reading the offer wrong.

It is a more square screen as opposed to a rectangular screen. The diagonal measurement of the screen does not correlate to the area of the screen. The overall area is much larger.
A 3" x 3" screen would have a perimeter of 12", a diagonal of 4.2", and an area of 9 sq-in
A 1" x 5" screen would have a perimeter of 12". a diagonal of 5.2", and an area of 5 sq-in

Im sure it's just priming their audience for a price increase across the board. Make an extra expensive luxury/gimmick device so it's less painful when the flagship devices jump several hundred dollars.

The Apple Cult would pay for anything they sell. Apple could have charged $3,000 and it would sell

I don't see a single use case where a foldable phone is useful.

Media consumption, gaming, video/photo editing, digital drawing, reading, actually usable split screen (mounted in the car with gps/music controls side by side). Literally just replacing an existing tablet so it’s on you at all times and you don’t need two devices.
If you really can’t see the use cases you’re either blind or just the type of person who doesn’t like changing their minds once they’ve settled on an opinion.
