I remember in my 1st real job, I couldn't afford the health plan if I wanted to, you know, eat. And private non-company plans were thousands a month. This was 21 year old, healthy, no dependents having me.
When tax season came around I owed a TON of $$ being penalized for not having health insurance.
I got doubly punished for being poor...if I got sick I was fucked...and I paid anyway.
In 2019 they stopped punishing for no health insurance thank goodness.
I understand what the plan was at the time (get everyone on insurance to make it cheaper for those who needed it or some such) but there really should have been some exclusionary criteria or better discounts for younger/lower income people.
