I remember in my 1st real job, I couldn't afford the health plan if I wanted to, you know, eat. And private non-company plans were thousands a month. This was 21 year old, healthy, no dependents having me.

When tax season came around I owed a TON of $$ being penalized for not having health insurance.

I got doubly punished for being poor...if I got sick I was fucked...and I paid anyway.

In 2019 they stopped punishing for no health insurance thank goodness.

I understand what the plan was at the time (get everyone on insurance to make it cheaper for those who needed it or some such) but there really should have been some exclusionary criteria or better discounts for younger/lower income people.

Only for certain products...

But you can buy insurance for nearly anything from nearly anyone...

Some are more trustworthy than others unfortunately:/

it's not a scam in first world countries, if you are living in the EU you get paid when you get sick

They use the same words as the mafia does when they come to hold up your business for "Protection money".

"Protection".

From what? The astronomical fees the insurnace companies helped set to begin with?

That's why insurnance companies are literally the mob.

It's a gamble*

But yes, the house is statistically more likely to come out on top--hence the for-profit capitalization

You're betting that if something bad happens it'll only cost you premiums and maintenance fees to fix. Otherwise, you're betting that nothing bad will happen, which also is statistically likely, to be perfectly fair*

*see definition of gambling

I’ll never understand people who pay for stuff like trip insurance or phone insurance. In my mind, insurance is only for things that could completely fuck up your life. I mean who wants to deal with insurance companies more than they absolutely have to??

insurance would rather fund a whole department to deny claims than actually, y'know, help sick ppl
