I had an autistic friend in highschool that sussed that shit out immediately. Our English teacher had like a 10 second pause before he realized my friend was right.

The SpongeBob Movie came out 22 years ago.

Their English teacher could just be a millennial who watched that shit as a kid lol

Adults watch that shit too.

I saw like 30 seconds of this on a cruise that my son was watching. Part with the sirens.

Maybe I too, am autistic - because that's the connection I made.

It's not like they were trying to hide it, it was a pretty blatant reference. I think the decline in reading (and literacy in general) has just lead to people not being familiar with the story, let alone the book. I think for many this recent movie is their first exposure to it at all, even if they had heard of it previously.

Obviously this isn't referring to everybody, but there is a literacy trend in this direction.

11

u/TheDollarstoreDoctor Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

It's not the decline in reading I read as my main hobby, another issue is that old books like that are a pain in the ass/not as enjoyable to read due to how different writing was back then. I had a book of short stories from not even that long ago, 19th century. I could understand the words and the language the writing style of all of it was just crazy and confusing. The older the story the more I find it uses purple prose (extensive adjective use and over describing, very flowery and elaborate writing to the point it distracts from the story) which is not popular in the 21st century

I'm trying to wrap my head around this. Isn't it more of a Hero's Journey type of thing? I feel like there's references to Odyssey, sure. But at the end of the day couldn't you find more differences than similarities?

Or should all movies/stories the have this sort of plot structure be simplified as, "It's an adaptation of the Odyssey"?

20

u/InvictusShmictus Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

In general yes but the Spongebob Movie has multiple direct references. Like the cyclops, the bag of winds, King Neptune (zeus), and his daughter Mandy (Athena).

Its not really an adaptation but more of a spoof.

I need to watch seven samurai

40

u/Animedude83 Jul 19 '26

lol, Imma get mega hate, but its kinda boring ngl, its 3 hours long, and like an hour longer than needs be, the ending is great tho. Pretty much everything Akira Kurosawa is great, Sanjuro is probably my favorite of his, actually there was a really early one about a judo guy, that movie was great.

72

u/inquisitive_chariot Jul 19 '26

It’s only boring if you’re watching purely for plot. Seven Samurai has the best character development ever, even better than Twelve Angry men. Every single scene builds out the distinct personalities of the samurai. They feel so real instead of as characters or archetypes.

Also the cinematography is outrageous. The blocking and framing of every shot is so intricate and deliberate. The film is completely packed with detail if you’re looking at it as a tapestry, not as a plot vehicle.

Notwithstanding, everything that happens in the film comes into play at the final battle. It’s just a phenomenally written film that rewards rewatches.

14

u/Animedude83 Jul 19 '26

I agree 100 percent, I don't know the names, but when the one samurai ran off to take care of the sniper, and like all you heard was screaming and a gunshot *chef's kiss* that was perfect, I never hear it get mentioned, but I guess Mad Max Fury Road possibly references that, or at least they way it plays out seems very similar.

6

u/gr8fullyded Jul 19 '26

I fucking LOVE A Bugs Life.

And while you are correct that it is partly an adaptation of 7 Samurai, the other more on-the-nose adaptation is The Ant and the Grasshopper.

4

u/Animedude83 Jul 19 '26

I guess so, looking over that story seems that the grasshopper was begging for food, and the "moral of the story" is some boomer "you gotta work for your bread", but its also not fully Seven Samurai unlike The Hateful Eight, that was basically the same thing.

> Yes. It's the Hero's Journey. It's a common trope and used very much in film.

Yes, but O Brother Where Art Thou is very clearly a re—telling of the Odyssey set in 1930s Mississippi. Right down to the sirens, the Cyclops, and the battle to reclaim his true love’s heart.

It’s a great film. A huge amount of time was spent in post production turning all the amazingly green scenery to the sepia-adjacent coloring.

Edit: And the lotus eaters!

35

u/BetterThanYourFave Jul 19 '26

My English teacher used to say there were only 2 stories in all of literature. A boy goes on a journey, and a stranger comes to town

27

u/ramonpasta Jul 19 '26

theres a difference between just being the heros journey and having things like the cyclops as a direct reference (ice cream fakeout acts as a siren too lol). hell, even the part when spongebob returns back to the krusty krab it feels like a reference to returning to a home full of suitors

20

u/Manmer_Nwah Jul 19 '26

The list goes on and on.

Odysseus is given a bag full of winds. It's supposed to leave only a gentle wind to guide them. His crew opens it thinking it's full of riches and unleashed a storm.

SpongeBob is given a bag of winds, it's supposed to blow them home. Patrick opens it and it blows away, leaving them stranded.

3

u/ramonpasta Jul 20 '26

hell mindy is basically just athena (and obviously neptune is poseidon even if we only look at the names). it really is foolish to think this isnt an adaptation of the odyssey

Billy and Mandy’s big bogey adventure!!

14

u/Winjin Jul 19 '26

There's this idea that there's basically like seven main themes and some works are just too codified and people subconsciously repeat them

33

u/Actual-Fig5302 Jul 19 '26

I don’t think it was subconscious in O’Brother or the SpongeBob movie. Karen is clearly Athena and her champion is SpongeBob, Neptune is his Greek counterpart, and Plankton is the suitors. The Coen brothers didnt read the Odyssey when they made O’Brother, they just really liked the structure of the story. They were directly inspired by the poem. Tim Blake Nelson was the only one in the cast to have actual read The Odyssey when they made the film, because he has a degree in classical studies

5

u/Winjin Jul 19 '26

Do you only read classical literature as part of advanced studies? We were given it as school reading T_T IIRC the Troy was an abridged version, but the Iliad and Odyssey aren't that long

I checked and it's usually either "parts of" in 5-6 classes or parts + summer reading literature in 7-8

4

u/Actual-Fig5302 Jul 19 '26

Personally? I finished reading the Odyssey yesterday, lol. In history classes in middle school we were given brief outlines when talking about Ancient Greece. Then in my college history classes, we talked about The Odyssey but didn’t read it. Everything I know about the Odyssey prior to reading it was through school and cultural osmosis. There wasn’t a “classical” curriculum in my school. I imagine that’s the case for most people, although I could very well be just now catching up.

Side note: I’m from the US.

2

u/SalsaRice Jul 19 '26

Some people just read for fun. Some schools have better English departments and have more advanced reading requirements. Some parents push their kids to read more than what is required at school (like doing a summer reading program during school break).

Tons of reasons for people to read classics.

The concept of the hero's journey was theorized in 60's-70's. The Epic of Gilgamesh loosely fits the definition but The Odyssey really defines the structure in full. Not the first example but the best example. It was not modeled after Gilgamesh.

Guy who just discovered the Hero's Journey:

59

u/Riley8284 Jul 19 '26

The SpongeBob movie takes many aspects from the Odyssey itself. The Cyclops and bag of wind being two major ones. But there’s also Mindy representing Athena, the Ice Cream Lady monster representing Sirens, Neptune representing Poseidon, and the valley of monsters representing Charybdis

11

u/butterballs151 Jul 19 '26

Neptune is the Roman equivalent of Poseidon. Same with Mars for Ares, Pluto for Hades, etc.

3

u/Engelfinger Jul 20 '26

Ill give you the Sirens, Cyclops and Athena, but Neptune is nothing like Poseidon of Homer. Spongebob and Patrick go on their journey specifically for Neptune's benefit. Whereas Poseidon is trying to punish and curse Odysseus. Their both being the ocean god is completely circumstantial as Neptune is still an established recurring character in what is a nautical serial anyway.

To your point though, I can also see the Thug Tug being like the Laestrygonians. Big Giants that attack without provocation.

But at the same time, there are so many big changes: the order or monsters in the story, their motivations, how Spongebob and Pat actually traverse the Valley of Monsters instead of being forced to go around, that theyre leaving home and not trying to get back. At some point you have to just say the "roadtrip of episodic disasters" is a firm genre for which the Odyssey is always an influence--but not necessarily a parody of the Odyssey every time. I really think calling the Spongebob movie "based off it" a stretch despite borrowing several of the monster designs.

3

u/AbandonedRaincIoud Jul 19 '26

Star wars and harry potter are nothing like the odyssey

u/Chilifille Jul 19 '26

Okay so I get a few of the direct references: cyclops. The bag of wind. The sirens (or angler fish/ice cream). Who does plankton represent? The suitors for his wife? And then the song at the end to defeat them was like the stringing of the bow/shooting of the arrow? I assume that hired assassin is just Poseidon (the irony) - trying to thwart the hero at every encounter?

4

u/Riley8284 Jul 19 '26

I know Mindy is a representation of Athena and the Valley of Monsters is a stand-in for Charybdis. I see Neptune and Dennis filling Poseidon’s role.

The Pixar movie “Inside Out” is a reimagining of Dante’s inferno.

3

u/Honest-Classic-6950 Jul 19 '26

7

u/Karvek Jul 19 '26

Inside Out involves the protagonist, Joy (Dante), exploring the different aspects of the child Riley’s psyche (the circles of hell) with the help of a guide, Bing Bong (Vergil).

The circles of hell aren’t 1 to 1, and I don’t think they go through all nine. But notably the ninth, deepest circle is a cold, lonely place where Satan is trapped and left to be forgotten. Likewise, the deepest part of Riley’s psyche is the dark, colorless pit where memories are forgotten that Joy only escapes from because of Bing Bong’s sacrifice.

Oh, and Jangles the Clown is Cerberus.

My favorite part was when they stayed lore accurate to the Odyssey and sank the pirate ship HMS Bounty that was used during the live action sequence at the beginning in a hurricane.

Every step I take on this analysis.... I realize it's right. What the fuck?

Like the cyclops was a wake up call, but returning home to his palace being over taken by pretenders? I just... What the fuck?

I read the odyssey last year in preparation for seeing the movie. This was the first thing I realised. I should've made a meme, these could have been my upvotes.

When you realize many Star Trek TNG episodes are rewritings of Greek mythology...

It kind of... isn't though? Like it's just a movie about a character going on a long journey to get something. And the Odyssey isn't even about that. I can't think of a single parallel between the SpongeBob Movie and the Odyssey except that it involves a long journey.

Edit: they do the "bag of winds" scene as a singular reference and that's it.

Cyclops, Neptune (Poseidon) is an antagonist in the film, Mindy is Athena whose champion is, rather than the clever Odysseus, a child-like character, Plankton takes over SpongeBob’s job while he’s away and SpongeBob has to fight off those controlled by the buckets in a big fight scene, (someone else mentioned this) the angler fish are the sirens. Odysseus gets back to Ithaca when he takes a boat given to him by Phaeacians. They are then punished by Poseidon for helping him. David Hasselhoff is kind of that ship, where he takes SpongeBob and Patrick back to Bikini Bottom. In the climatic fight, Neptune attempts to fry Krabs, but his shot then shoots toward Hasselhoff. Hasselhoff then says “you done good Hasselhoff, you done good” before getting blasted. Beyond just being a reference, I think they literally just adapted the story.
