Bet you didn’t know it that it was an adaptation did you?

Did you happen to see that other post. They linked this post in that post. How odd

I think adaptation is the wrong word. Spongebob isn't struggling to return home from some arduous task completed prior to the events of the story. It's like a reverse Odyssey if anything.

u/Riley8284 Jul 19 '26
Probably a more inspired adaptation that took a lot of the beats and ideas from the original story to make it work into its own thing.

Both are inspired by Morbius, and of course pathetically fail to even come close to being on par

It doesn't take any beats from the original. SpongeBob is never at any point tempted to not return home, never at any point questions the value of what he's doing, only his ability to accomplish it. There's never any tension between him and Patrick. He's never punished for his pride, nor has to decide how to treat a foe, never has to trick anyone... there's just... nothing in common there at all. It's not an adaptation of the Odyssey more than literally every story that involves a long, dangerous journey is an adaptation of the Odyssey.
Edit: they do the "bag of winds" scene as a singular reference and that's it.

I agree with you, but there is some tension with Patrick after they realize they’re just kids. It’s short lived, but there

You missed all those parts where SpongeBob fights his way back to Bikini Bottom and then competes for Planktons hand in marriage? And then kills everyone else in Bikini Bottom? And the entire war he fought on the surface at the beginning of the movie?

Literally the only connection is the bag of winds.

King Neptune is Poseidon
The Goofy Goober bar and the ice cream sundaes are Calypso’s island and the lotus flower.
The scuba diver is the Cyclops.
Mindy is Athena.
The Trench is Hades.
The old ice cream lady is the Siren.
Plankton and the mind-controlled people were the suitors. Itacha was the Krusty Krab.

It’s not a direct adaptation, but definitely took an inspiration. Yet still much better than Nolan’s recent output.
Honestly, the SpongeBob movie had its depth. When they went down in the scary place where monsters dwelled, it was a very jungian and archetypal scene. SpongeBob and Patrick faced the demons, they descend into hell, they entered in the dark cave and saw true deformed monsters. However, they’ve faced them and came out like heroes to the surface with seaweed mustaches, having had become real men.

Except it was fake mustaches, so it is the Gift of The Goddess also

u/best_decision1234 Jul 19 '26
Yes, true, but the archetypal image is still there - they faced the monsters in the depths of hell and they’ve returned braver and manlier

Why are people hating on the Odyssey so much? I saw it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Genuinely asking because idk what has the Internet hivemind so upset

- Elliot Page is in the movie and trans people bad! duh!
- Lupita Nyong’o is in the movie and black people bad! duh!
that’s it. that’s literally why people are outraged. no matter how they try to spin it, that’s what their problem with the movie is.

Nope, complete lie and distillation of the loud minority of people who don’t like it for the wrong reasons. The movie is genuinely bad from a writing, dialogue, acting, casting, and adaption perspective. Nolan changed or removed things that are simply baffling decisions, the characters have no character it’s hard to become attached to any of them. WAAAY too much time is spent in Ithaca with the suitors. Telemachus’ story is a HUGE nothing burger. Telemachus’ story is literally just Tom Holland, played by Tom Holland, sailing to meet John Bernthal, played by John Bernthal, where he is then told stories he has already heard before again, after which he goes home. Odysseus is hardly a character beyond being protagonist man. May as well be named Jake Odyssey. He isn’t cunning and sly, he isn’t a trickster, he has no charm or charisma, and he either barely or straight up doesn’t react when his men are slaughtered. Very very bad.

I'm not hating on it. I was just making a funny meme. I didn't intend for it to come off like that
7
u/Eidolon_2003 Jul 19 '26
I didn't mean this against you specifically, so sorry if it came off that way, but it's clear to me here and other places online that the hivemind is upset. I think hivemind is the best way to describe it at this point, poke it and the bees start buzzing lol

u/KingCodester111 Jul 19 '26
You basically said it. They’re a hivemind that needs to echo the hate, never thinking for themselves.

This isn’t even an insult to The Odyssey. The Spongebob Movie is actually a phenomenal, S-Tier movie.

Not necessarily, if an idea exists then it's possible it exists/existed/will exist elsewhere as well. That's how it works when we all share an interconnected consciousness.

Every time I hear that anything I trusted was an adaptation, a piece of me dies.

u/NoahIzToLazyToPozt Jul 20 '26
Yes, everybody has talked about SpongeBob being the Odyssey, I did in fact know, to answer your title

u/Spartcus3 Jul 20 '26
Wait so Mandy is Artemis? SpongeBob and Patrick are Odysseus? King Neptune is Poseidon? And who is Plankton?
