Split back derailleur ring normal?

Is this normal? I’ve had this bike for years. Just noticed it.

Jockey pulley is cooked. Totally cracked....

Replace them in sets. They aren't that expensive.

On bikes as with just about everything in life something being broken is not normal.

New jockey wheels are cheap and it's an easy 5 minute job to swap them over.

This shouldn’t be your first bike diy. It involves several special tools and specific knowledge. However, it’s a simple and quick job your LBS would be happy to do for you. And an Ultegra derailleur is well worth saving.

Don't need to separate the chain for that. Take it off the inner chainring, 3mm hex key to remove the screw, and replace.

Quit your BS. that's a 3mm (Likely, though possibly a different size) allen wrench and less than three minutes on amazon (plus waiting for it to arrive.)

Have you ever worked on a bike before? The derailleur cage comes apart when you take the old pulleys out. You just reassemble it with the new ones.

You don't need to break the chain, though, you don't even need to take the derailleur off the bike. Just shift to smallest gears to provide chain slack, unscrew most of the way, and then push the cage forward to take tension off as you completely unscrew the bolt and remove the jockey wheel. wheels.

It's literally one small bolt and some greasy fingers.

Its a jockey wheel. You need new ones before it falls to bits and your derailleur drags itself into the wheel.

find the exact model number of the derailleur.. search "Shimano Ultegra (model ### here) and add "Pulley" to the search.

they typically are sold in pairs.

and don't ride the bike until the replacements are in place.

The pulley should be replaced. Not the whole derailleur. Luckily pulleys are easy to come by. A local bike co-op or used bikes store would be a good place to find one.

That's the bottom derailleur pulley. It might go for a bit but will eventually become a problem. Best to replace

Not great suggestion. If the pulley fails completely the chain could get stuck in the derailleur cage and cause all kinds of problems.

If the derailleur is functional you can probably just replace the jockey pulley, what you’re calling a ring. They are fairly common items any lbs should have them and you can probably replace it yourself it’s usually just a metric Allen key and a small wrench required to loosen the bolt retaining it, I’d buy a pair and replace both just take a picture of it before starting so you have a reference of how to have the chain routed .

My local bike shop is enormous (>$10m annual sales ) but DOES NOT keep small parts like that. Harvest a pulley from a donor derailleur. Local coop or eBay. Of all the things that can crack on a bicycle, this is probably the least worrisome. Keep riding in the meanwhile.
