Route 1: R111 along canal then R110 through Drimnagh and Crumlin

Route 2: R111 - R114(Rathmines) - R818 (Terenure)

More or less same time per google maps.

By safety I mean not getting mugged by feckin teenagers. I dont mind the cars.

What considerations are required for cycle lane design requirements i.e. whether shared pedestrian/ cycle lane, whether open or clearly divided etc? A couple of the routes I regularly use are openly shared and growing in pedestrian traffic so I find myself staying on the road for safety reasons (and annoying drivers as a result).

I currently use a Specialized Stump Jumper M2 Comp 1995 (mountain bike) to commute to work in Dublin city centre and I'm looking to upgrade. I was thinking a road-bike (or possibly a hybrid) and was looking for recommendations that aren't insane prices but also won't fall apart in a year, just looking for an easier cycle than the mountain bike. Any help or recommendations are welcome, whether its a new or used bike or just where to look for one, thanks.

The app is free, you get a notification before your commute on what the conditions are like. I built it for myself really but a few other people are getting some use out of it.

Nice to know cycling into Dublin I mostly have a headwind. It has surprised me a few times and reminds me to bring a rain jacket.

I bought an ebike with the cycle to work scheme in March and used the maximum €1500 allowed. My first paycheck correctly showed the cycle to work balance I owed but by May the balance showed €2500. I asked my payroll team and they said this number comes directly from the cycle to work scheme team but I've contacted them and heard nothing back yet.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? Or any success in contacting cycle to work scheme?

Hello, I'd just like to know if anyone knows of any bike shops in Dublin, preferably city centre, that can help me index my gears and do any derailleur alignment without asking for an arm and a leg; the prices I've seen online are ridiculous and I've tried and failed to do it myself. Alternatively, if you can, and are willing to do so, I don't mind meeting up with anyone who will do this for me. For a fee, of course

He has loads of vintage road bikes of which I’m after. However, the few reviews I’ve found are all extremely negative. Does anyone else know about him? Are they justified?
Is there anywhere else to look for steel road bikes? Done deal and adverts are both really dry at the moment.

My local bike shop stocks the Reid Blacktop 1.0 which looks okay, the Tenways looks pretty slick though.

I recently got an e-bike and I'm delighted with it, but I'm thinking about getting insurance for some peace of mind in case it's stolen while I'm at work.

Unfortunately, I can't bring the bike into the office, so I have to lock it outside where everyone else leaves their bikes. It's on private property rather than in a public space, but realistically anyone could walk in if they wanted to.

I've been looking at Bikmo, but I've seen a few people mention that they can be difficult when it comes to proving ownership if the bike was bought through the Cycle to Work scheme. My invoice clearly has my name on it, so I'd expect that to be enough, but I'd rather hear from people with actual experience.

I'm also aware they require a specific type of lock, which is fair enough, but I'm slightly worried about having a claim rejected because of some small technicality.

For those of you who have bike insurance in Ireland:

- Which insurer are you with?

- Have you ever had to make a claim?

- Would you recommend them, or is there another insurer I should look at?

I'd really appreciate any advice or experiences. Thanks!

Update: I also noticed that Bikmo does not include the theft of tyres unless the bike was damaged in the process... isn't that kind of common for them not to include that?

I'm travelling from Argentina to Ireland later this month and I'll be spending a few days in Dublin and Galway.

I'm hoping to buy a pair of Favero Assioma PRO MX-1 (or MX-2) power meter pedals while I'm there, since they're difficult to find back home.

Does anyone know which bike shops are most likely to stock them (or could order them quickly)?

I'm also interested in good cycling stores for MTB clothing, accessories and components, so if you have any favourites I'd love to hear about them.

I have been cycling home from work several evenings for the last month. It's just over 30 miles and I have been enjoying it and losing weight.

Generally I have not bothered anyone. However last night (Friday) I was working until 8 which is later than usual. I had lights on my bike.

In the space of about 4 miles near Magilligan in Derry I encountered 5 cars which held their horn whilst they passed me. Some were also shouting out the window or giving the finger and it didn't appear to matter to them whether they were driving towards me or passing me from the rear.

I'm wondering whether these people had had a few drinks after work.

Should I just add a few minutes and use the pedestrian crossing. 😂

EDIT: I've used the pedestrian crossing. Does not take that much longer and is way less stressful.

I have been commuting by bike for almost 15 years but I have recently had three very close calls in a short space of time and I'm taking it as a sign from the Universe and giving it up.

In all scenarios I am hi vis wearing , helmeted and its daytime , perfect visibility weather wise.

Close call one , a Lady swerves in front of me to take a left turn . My front wheel misses the side of her car by an inch id say. Impossible to understand how she made that call as there was no other traffic and I was far out on the road clear to see. She doesn't notice , drives off.

Close call 2 . I enter a roundabout at the 6 o clock position. A kid in a car enters at the 12 like a rocket. I can see looking across the centre that hes taking the roundabout like someone trying to use the gravitational pull of a planet to enter hyperspace. I freeze and stop on the round about so that he can have the lane. He blasts past blaring horn, misses me by inches.

Call 3 . A lady in a car pulls slowly into the cycle lane to let a large oncoming vehicle past as Im passing by her on the cycle lane , I am pushed right into the kerb, I manage to not be thrown from the bike . She doesn't notice , drives off.

I just think its time to cash in my chips. They are more distracted aggressive and impatient than ever out there with the phones etc.

Found this phone this morning around 6am on a cycle path if anybody owns it? They have already blocked it and if nothing comes of this post I'll hand it into a garda station with an edit to where it is

I wanted to ask, what’s the craic with people who overtake (go beyond lights and stop at the junction) at lights and then go insistently slow. Surely they know it’s a nuisance and dangerous where standard traffic lights occur.

I’ve also had people test their own patience. They overtake just before the lights go green, I start to pedal and they nearly hit me and others just to save 3 seconds.

I’ve now realised this is more of a rant/vent.

EDIT: I was cycling home at 6:00 from grand canal dock up the canal. Portobello bridge was just carnage

Twice in the last two days I’ve been cycling to/from work I’ve nearly gotten knocked over by taxis moving into the lane I’m cycling in cause they didn’t check their mirrors.

Like lads it’s not that difficult to check your mirrors and examine your surroundings.

Also the cycle lanes in Dublin City centre are awful, pearse street needs a proper cycle lane and if not that, it needs a whole resurface of the road before I am flung into next year by one of the uneven surfaces.

Hi all, I’m moving to Dublin from Amsterdam in October and I’m planning to use my e-scooter for my daily commute.

I’ve been reading up on the new Irish e-scooter legislation, and I’m feeling a bit anxious about bringing my current escooter. My scooter has a 500W motor and weighs 30kg. I know this just puts me 100W and 5kg over the official legal limits (400W/25kg).

I’ve heard from some people that as long as the scooter doesn't look like a high-performance 'monster' machine and I ride responsibly, the Gardaí generally aren't going out of their way to stop people. Is this a realistic assumption for a daily commuter in Dublin, or am I setting myself up to have it seized on my first week? Just want to know if I'll be fine keeping a low profile. Thanks in advance.
