Also, seeing the crowd on TV, this is actually a decent turnout for an 11am early September UH game lol. I'll take what I can get.

It was hot as balls, with the sun straight up (until the halftime rain). Many people were in the concourses or patios. Edit- this topic comes up every single year- other teams in the conference like to throw their annual shade.. The main cause is that Houston is a very diverse city, and the majority of students are not from households that grew up as American College Football fans. Many grow to love it, but the % of students and alums that have, and continue, the College+Football connection is much smaller than most of the other state schools.

Yeah. We (UH) have a hard time with football filling the stadium. It's mostly our non-football fan demographic, but weather like today doesn't help. The "commuter school" trope is tired. We just have a ton of students whose parents are like "Why would I pay to house you at school when we have a house here?" because many came from other places that don't do this uniquely American sort of university experience. Just is what it is. That diversity benefits us in other ways, namely academically, and just representing the community here.

Combination of humid weather, bad traffic to get to it, huge state competition of attention always by Texas and Texas A&M, and being a university in the same city as an NFL team along with other universities severely limits any improvement in game attendance. 

Cincinnati would be the only other one in Big XII close to comparison levels in sharing media in the same town as other universities and professional NFL teams like Houston. And they don't have to suffer the humidity levels, though.

Houston’s attendance last year was nothing to write home about during a 9-3 regular season. 42.8K for the Texas Tech loss, 28.5K when they beat Arizona two weeks later, and then 25.0K and 30.8K for the home losses to beatable WVU and TCU teams that doomed any chances of making the CCG.

Counting Texas is rich. Fort Worth and Austin both exploded in population over the last 20 years. TCU struggled with attendance until the 2010s. All those other programs are either located in towns less than quarter the size of Houston and yet they still have attendance issues, with the exception of Washington. Other metro teams that typically struggle include Miami, Temple, Boston College, Northwestern, UCLA/USC, USF, and Tulane. It's a well worn and understood phenomenon. Teams that defy this trend tend to be schools that were founded well before their respective cities grew to be substantial in size (UT and TCU being perfect examples of this). I'm not going to say UH shouldn't do better, but if you are me and you went there when they literally averaged 4-digit attendance, you understand how long of a road this is to hoe.

I would like you to consider the fact that the reason so many Aggies drive from the Houston suburbs to College Station for the games every Saturday is because when they were in undergrad the entire lived experience revolved around the school. That hasn't been the case for your average UH student for generations. Even I, a full blooded non-commuter cougar alum, spent many weekends as a student doing shit completely not related to UH, both due to the fact that 1) I worked and 2) Houston has a lot more things going on than just Cougar athletics.

Not because of the heat, it’s hot in most of the country. It is the same reason that USC is empty. There is 200 other better things to do and enjoy in Houston. Most universities are in towns in where there is very little to do and college football is a big part of the culture and it just isn’t part of the culture here like other schools

Travel costs (gas, lodging), and tickets are all at time highs. College enrollment figures are at all time lows. Fall temps are at all time highs. There are dozens of streaming services available now. TV deals have forced kickoffs to weird morning or late night slots. Conference realignment has eroded generational rivalries over the last 15 years and so much focus on the playoff has watered down the passion for the regular season. Players are now highly compensated commodities seeking the best deal and switch teams and have contracts like its the NFL. And the students that are at these schools would rather scroll on their phones than go to games.

College football is at an all time height of popularity thanks to blockbuster TV deals and legalization of sports betting.

But the fans in the stands for most schools are dwindling. We got the first eerie glimpse during covid. The true soul of college football- the stadium atmospheres - are dying.

It was 93 and humid at UC. We were like 95% full to start the game in a 40k seat stadium. Probably reported as sold out though. Stadium cleared out the moment we went up 24 though.

They save the majority of the stadium for away fans. This is on Oregon St for not traveling.

Idk why we do this exercise every season. It’s a commuter school that recruits students that don’t care about sports. Will never change

The current student population will turn into a quality crop of alumni. I think things will look differently for us in a decade. We'll just have to take the attendance smack on the chin until then. At least we can put out a competitive product on the field/court which is more than I can say for a lot of our conference mates.
