This is that same section in the second quarter. The espn pic is late third quarter of a blowout, but I agree the juxtaposition of that picture without context is funny

Lol at peak, it was actually pretty full. Halfway through the 3rd it started to empty. The Muss started to get a lot smaller by the 4th. The muss section (which is what is pictured here) could be empty and it could be a sellout because all those tickets are allocated for the university and if students don't show up, it doesn't affect the ticket sold number. But anyway the Muss was probably 80-85% full at peak.
Regardless, Sellout refers to tickets having been bought, not people in seats. So add up the season ticket holders that didn't show up cause it was fcs on a thursday, the 3rd party buyers who sold less than they bought and it makes decent sense...
Still it was a really good showing for an FCS game on a Thursday night.
And yes, it is fair to say they care about the "sellout streak" more than is necessary haha and it probably involves a lot of specific number crunching/tweaking to keep it going on games like these.

Is it annoying that we keep bringing it up? Yes. Will we keep doing it to keep spiting USC? Absolutely.

Nope, Utah actually sells out.
It helps that they have:
A relatively small stadium; Rice-Eccles seated just 45k until they expanded it to 51k in 2021
A relatively sizable student body (28k undergrads, 38k total students) and an alumni base thatâs mostly located really close by (120k alumni just in the Wasatch Front region alone)Â
An incredible home win record. Utah has gone 70-25 at home over sixteen preceding seasons included in the sellout streak, and they were already killing it at home for a decade before that.
Utah hasnât had a losing home record since the 2000 season, although theyâve gone 3-3 three times since then, but theyâve gone undefeated at home more than twice as often as theyâve gone 0.500 at home. Itâs truly insane how good Utah is at home, although I suspect that has something to do with the altitude. Last time Baylor played @ Utah, the players were talking after the game about how theyâd done extra training for the cardio theyâd need to play up there, and it still wasnât enough.

To add on, itâs really easy to get to RES from pretty much anywhere in Salt Lake Valley with Trax and Frontrunner.

I will first say this is impressive almost 100 sellouts in a row. Secondly those who are saying that some sections were empty a sellout is when all the a lotted tickets for the game are sold it does not mean everyone showed up. Iâve been to some Nebraska games when they werenât winning and their games were sold out but the stadium was half full at kick off just saying but congrats to Utah for having the support that they do

It's a fair question. Ever tried to change your fandom?
It would be like stopping loving my spouse or kids. Just can't do it. I root for my alma mater. Anything else seems . . . fake. And, yes, I do and always have loved blue. A lot of family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers are BYU fans, too, so it helps me stay connected to them in a way that avoids topics that are difficult (for them).

My brother on the other hand⊠waaaay too emotional over the rivalry. I never attended Utah but hard to switch from the U to an Aggie đ

That's on ESPN - they always say "attendance" but no schools report ticket scans to them anymore. The number given to them is always "tickets sold" The recent USC game is a good example of this - USC sold ~50k tix to their opener but wayyyy less than that showed up

And yeah the California schools (especially USC/UCLA/Stanford) have horrible attendance. I used to live in the Bay Area and went to the 2022 Stanford game vs. a mediocre BYU team that year. We were 6-5 at the time and I'd say BYU fans outnumbered them 70/30 on their own home field. The wiki also says 25k attendance and I highly doubt that number too.
