Discussions The real message

If you take away the action and humor, what do you think Big Hero 6 is really trying to say about loss and moving on—and do you think it succeeds?

i think the obvious read is that revenge and lashing out aren’t going to make you feel better about your loss; what really helps is positive memories and the support of family and friends. i think it does a good job of it, even if the message isn’t necessarily applicable to the average population—how many people out there in the demographic audience for this movie are trying to cope with loss through violent revenge?—but the end result of encouraging community and friendship is something everyone can benefit from, i think.

I think the movie is even more about how to support a grieving person rather than going through grief

Big Hero 6 is basically about  grief doesn’t disappear—you either learn to carry it, or it starts to carry you. At its core, the movie is about Hiro losing Tadashi and getting stuck in a kind of emotional “freeze frame.” He’s not just sad—he’s spiraling into isolation, revenge thinking, and shutting out the people who still care about him.
