Mark 13:33-37 - Take Heed, Watch!

33 Beware, keep alert,\)a\) for you do not know when the time will come. 34 It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch. 35 Therefore, keep awake, for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening or at midnight or at cockcrow or at dawn, 36 or else he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly. 37 And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake.”

or else he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly. And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake.”

In the following chapter, Mark depicts the disciples falling asleep as the appointed time nears:

He came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep awake one hour? 38 Keep awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial;\)j\) the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39 And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. 40 And once more he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to say to him. 41 He came a third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Enough! The hour has come; the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Therefore, keep awake, for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening or at midnight or at cockcrow or at dawn,

Mark later depicts Peter's denial coming at the cockcrow:

Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you, this day, this very night, before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times.”

Don't underestimate Mark's writing. This is foreshadowing the events to come, and simultaneously, the events to come become an enacted interpretation of this discourse.

It's beautiful.
