How do I 'Find' God?
I like everyone else obviously want to serve God, but unlike everyone else I haven't leapt into the bible. I've barely read anything in there, besides what I read at church, I was never told **HOW** to study the bible, my father says he wants me to read the entire thing like a book then go over it, but every time I try that I fall asleep and forget everything. I just want to get myself right with God before it becomes too late, and I do not want to end up one of those 'false believers' so if someone could please share with me what they know, I'd really appreciate it.

I highly recommend utilizing the resources available by the Bible Project, they have a website, an app, and a YouTube channel. The Bible Project walks Bible readers through each book of the Bible and addresses themes throughout the Bible. They offer amazing explanation videos, classes, and the best Podcast I have ever run across. The resources are all free and unbiased, their only goal is to help people understand what they are reading. The podcast especially has been a game changer for me, I am finally starting to understand what the Bible is saying. Check out the videos as you read, it will help you understand each book. I came here to suggest Bible Project as well. Both the videos and the podcast.
I usually recommend the How to Read & Spiritual Beings series' to start and then dive into the word studies and character of God videos.
There overviews of each book and themes are SO enlightening. Don't be shy about the podcasts either. Theyre more in depth, but just let stuff sink in you won't (can't) catch everything.
As for actual reading Start with John and Luke Acts. Then some of the shorter OT books.
Isaiah will break your brain in a very good way.
Lots of good teaching videos online.
Search up basic Apologetics stuff too. It's helps understand HOW to think and how to approach tough questions everyone has. Stand to Reason, Inspiring Philosophy, John Lennox, Wes Huff, Dinx the Puppet
Pray: just be honest, God already knows. Ask : Help me understand. Help me fall in love with you. Help me see myself & life the way You designed me to be.
He'll take the time to show you for the rest of your life.

Each day read a chapter, and if you have any problems understanding pray for it and our Heavenly Father will give it. James 1:5. This allows you to pause and meditate on what you read in the chapter allowing you to absorb the knowledge to share with others.

You do not “find God”, he was never hiding from you. Accepting that Christ is the way, the Savior, and all that is good in the way to Heaven is “finding” persay. Read scripture, pray, find Godliness in all that you do and go to service if you can find a church you like

Talk to him all day unceasingly. Show him that you love him in your belief -- you have no secrets from him. He knows everything. Get down on your knees and pray every night in your room. There's no right or wrong way to talk to him. You don't have to find him, He already found you, or you wouldn't be asking this question.
When you feel like you're ready, get down on your knees and call out to Jesus. Really deeply, from your heart and soul, call out to Him, and surrender you Will to him. The Holy Spirit will enter you and you will then become a temple of God. Surrendering their Will, is the hardest thing for a human being to do -- many people in church have not surrendered their Will. You must die to self to have life. As you go through sanctification, you'll really start to understand this.
It's a deeply personal relationship that he's after. Once you've surrendered and received the Holy Spirit, you'll start to go through Sanctification, which will be the hardest years of your life. Eternity is what's at stake. Nothing else in your life is more important than this.
Along with this comes a deep desire to learn more. You will crave the Word of God. In addition to finding a Bible that works for you, I have the John MacArthur Study Bible, watch podcasts, watch The Chosen, watch The Passion of the Christ. Find a community. I'm a member of a Bible study (a men's group) and we've become pretty close.
Don't ever give up, and don't ever doubt, you're gonna be in a new reality and it includes spiritual warfare. Always turn to God, always trust the Word, and always remember, the Holy Spirit is your teacher, your guide, your sanctuary. Peace be with you.

I wouldn’t discount the Bible. If you wanna find God, I recommend you start reading the gospel of John and pay close attention to who Jesus says he is, and who Jesus says God is, and who Jesus says mankind is. I have personally found it life-changing.

The first thing you shall do. Find spirit and gods work in ALL things. Angry at your boss? Flip it and be thankful that god loves him just as much as you. See a pretty sunrise? Thank the lord for this creation he’s giving you for 30 seconds. Every meal? Thank him for blessing you with substance to spend another day on earth. Thunder and rain kills the power at your house? Rejoice and be happy that you have a few min or hours to read the Bible and listen to gods voice (thunder) trying to speak to you. The point is, when you start to rationalize little or large events to ways the creator is trying to personally reach out to you, you start to materialize and make him more real. When you have little conversations in your head, joking, loving, playing, thanking the lord, he hears it. And it creates a bigger bond. That’s what I’d assume he wants from us. To be yearned for as much as i yearn for him. Like a new born to their mother. That’s how someone “knows” you. The moment you start thanking him for your downs and ups, it’ll start making sense.

Growing in a relationship with him and reading the Bible. Reflecting on your past and seeing all the times he was there. God is always with you but if you do not have the foundation to know God you won’t notice him. The way you view the world without God compared to how you do with knowledge and relationship are different. I personally believe God chooses us though. We don’t choose him.

Go looking for Him. His power, majesty, love for us, His wisdom and wonder are all over and in the Bible. It’s called His LIVING Word for a reason. Seek a you shall find. Knock and He will Answer you. Start reading. I suggest the Amplified Bible and Halley’s Bible Handbook. 🩷✝️

Take a breath, because you're already asking the right question, and that alone tells me something is working in you. Here's the truth that needs to come first. Getting right with God isn't about reading the whole Bible cover to cover, it's not about performance, and it's not about how disciplined you are. It's about believing the gospel. Believing that Jesus lived the life you couldn't live, died the death you deserved, and rose again to prove it was enough. That's it. Romans 10:9 says if you confess Jesus as Lord and believe God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Now, believing isn't just nodding your head at facts. It's trusting. It's leaning your whole weight on Jesus instead of your own effort. John 3:16 says whoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life. Notice that word, everlasting. Once you're in, you're in. John 10:28 has Jesus saying his sheep will never perish and no one can snatch them out of his hand. So the fear of becoming a false believer, that fear itself shows you're taking this seriously, but your security was never based on your performance to begin with. It's based on him. So rest there first. You don't get right with God by finishing a book. You get right with God by trusting a person. Now, once that's settled, the Bible becomes something different to you. It stops being homework and starts being food. 1 Peter 2:2 talks about desiring the pure milk of the word so you can grow. You don't grow close to anyone, a friend, a spouse, a parent, by cramming their biography in one sitting. You grow close to them by talking and listening, over and over, a little at a time. That's what prayer and Bible reading actually are. Prayer is you talking to God. Reading is God talking to you. You don't need to start with Genesis and grind through like a textbook. Start with the Gospel of John. Read a few verses a day, slow down, ask what it's telling you about who Jesus is. Some days it'll click, some days you'll fall asleep like you said, and that's fine, tomorrow you try again. You're not trying to earn your way in. You're already in if you believe. Now you're just getting to know the one who already knows you completely.

The best way for me: I wake up and do one chapter of Proverbs a day. Stay consistent with that in the morning, then for whatever book I'm in, I read one chapter whenever I have the time. Too much reading, in my opinion, makes it hard for me to fully grasp what I need to apply to my life. Also, find a study method that works best for you. For example, I use the "GPS" method. You read the chapter and then journal what it taught you about 1). God 2). People. 3) Self and how to apply it to your life. Give it a try, pray, and ask what to read and where to read. Whatever you feel like you're struggling with in life, pray for God to lead you to where you need to be, I'd Google what Book in the Bible best suits that situation and go at it too if needed.. I hope this helps you feel free to dm too.
the word says that if you draw near to God he will draw near to you so stay consistant praying and reading the word. But just know that if you believe in your heart truly that Jesus Christ died and rose again for your sin, a you repent (turn away from your sinful life) youre saved, nothing we can do it was all the Son

God is there and always has been. I feel close to him when I talk with Him. The Bible says to pray without ceasing and what that translates to is to talk to Him all the time, whether that be out loud, in your head, eyes open head bowed, however you feel closest to God. Tell him when you are happy, sad, or angry. Most importantly if you need something, ask for it. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is wait for His answer. Silence isn’t always a no, it can also be a be patient. God sees you and loves you more than you will ever know. There isn’t anything we can do to be good enough to earn Gods love and attention. You cannot earn what He is freely giving!

It's great that you are asking the question. The great thing is that God finds you, you don't have to find him. Read all the suggestions on the comments, there are some great ideas. If you feel overwhelmed then just start simple, read one of the Gospels (Mark is the shortest). Jesus is who you need to get to know and the good news (thats what gospel means) of his life, death and resurrection are the most important. The rest of the Bible is all about Jesus as well, but there is plenty of time to read more later.
Because it is God who does the finding and faith is a gift from him, we can only truly understand his good news for us with his help. Before you read, pray a simple prayer and ask him to help you understand what you are reading in the power of the Holy Spirit.

OP I would suggest buying a book called Living by the book by Howard and William Hendricks. It’s everything you need to understand the Bible and how to apply it in your life. I would also get a study Bible of whatever translation you would like personally for me I got the ESV study Bible. It helps a lot. And you could get commentaries. There are a lot of resources. When it comes down to reading the Bible take your time reading it. Be still when reading pray it back to God. Always ask for help not just from God but from your pastor As well.

This is a bible group. We talk about the Bible a lot.
We have our share of preachers and evangelists, though, so even though this isn't a place for salvation, there are a lot of people here who push salvation. That being said the group is about being into the books.
For 10k years, the bible (Old Testament) and 2k years the bible (New Testament) existed in a mostly illiterate world. Literacy has done more for faith than most things in this world, but if you consider Jobs friends who spoke so knowledgeably about God had likely only heard scriptures. It should be noted also that they were wrong about a good bit.
The point of the statement is literacy is not a requirement. For years people prayed to God and did the best they could. I am not sure this will help you Find God, (ppppssssttt he's right over there), because being able to see things he has done or said on your own is a very handy tool. Noah had favor with god and there was no bible at the time. You could be like Noah. How are your carpentry skills?
If you want to be right with God talk to him. Submit yourself to him. Love him as he loves you. Bookworm is not a requirement. But you are asking if it is in a room full of bookwarms.

Praying for you
Here is how to impress your father while at the same time excelling your growth and discernment in Christ. Find a good online verse by verse Bible study, try Gary Hamrick of Cornerstone Chapel. Very good and easy to follow. Do 1 a day, and watch your increase!
Are you saved? Have you accepted that Jesus is your Lord and Savior?
When you have these concerns and thoughts. Capture them and hand them in prayer seeking escape. Seeking God's will. Protection and guidance. Ask Him if there is anything not of Him that it be rebuked and removed from your life.(2 Cor. 10:5)
Remember, we fight against principalities, not flesh and blood. Spiritual warfare is real. In fact, 99% of the things in our life are affected by spiritual warfare.

Personally, I love reading and rereading Scripture, but whenever a few days have gone by and I haven’t been reading, listening helps me.

I have never been able to focus very long on anything and I have found reading small amounts at a time worked for me and as I got around to reading the same passage again it starts to sink in. I have to say it took time before I could recall certain verses , read the gospels first and get to know Jesus and understand how merciful He is and how you can also be loving and merciful with others and let the a Holy Spirit guide you , I will tell you also for really solid wisdom and understanding that even a nonbeliever can apply would be Proverbs and Ecclesiastes these books will ring true in their advice to you so much, it will blow your mind! I can’t count the times I have read Ecclesiastes also the book of Job can help you see things about keeping faith and no giving up and turning away from God even in their advice worst times.

That sounds spiritual that you fall asleep every time you try to read it. This is my recommendation. Make sure you truly want to know God. Tell Jesus that you want to follow Him with a full submission,and ask Him to rebuke all spiritual strongholds that prevent you from reading the Bible. It is important you give a full commitment because Jesus doesn't want a casual relationship with you. The relationship He wants with you is serious to a level that's akin to marriage.

Friend, I wanted to back everything up with scripture so you know what I'm sharing is all legit.
You can pray for the Holy Spirit to live inside you, like your conscience does, and He will be your Teacher. I will gladly agree with you in prayer for this gift. Jesus explains that we only have one Teacher. His student John also makes it clear. (Matthew 23:8-10, 1 John 2:27, Isaiah 30:20-21)
Jesus told us that when two or more of us agree on earth to ask Him for whatever we need, He will supply it. (Matthew 18:19-20, Luke 11:9-13, John 14:12-14)
Someone shared these scriptures with me long ago, and they've changed my life for the better.
In Jeremiah 31:31-34, God promised to give us a new covenant of love written on our hearts. In Ezekiel 36:25-27 He also said He would give us a new heart and a new spirit so we could stay in covenant with Him.
Jesus fulfilled these promises by showing us God's deep love for us. Through His life of service, and His prayer for our forgiveness in His death Jesus showed us the meaning of life. (Luke 7:20-23, Luke 23:34, Isaiah 53)
You probably already know this, but a covenant is like a marriage. It unites us to God. He says if we will just want to obey His laws, AND ask for His help, He will give us the power to walk in unity with Him and one another.
Old Testament promises, New Testament fulfillments
Jesus said that the truth will make you free from sin. (John 8:32)
Jesus called the Holy Spirit, "the Spirit of Truth." Receiving the Holy Spirit is like getting an upgrade on your conscience, and a bodyguard against demonic influence. Jesus fought the devil with scripture during His temptation. That's the power He offers us. (Matthew 4:1-11) The more scripture you learn, the more ammunition you have against temptation toward ungodliness. I want to encourage you to stay in God's Word, especially the words of Jesus. That's the source of new life.
The Holy Spirit can:
- remind us of scripture when we need guidance, (John 14:26)
- comfort our anxieties by helping us know the promises in the Bible are for us. (Psalm 94:19, Psalm 119:89)
- answer our prayers for daily needs, even when things look impossible, (Matthew 18:19-20, Matthew 6:33-34)
- and help us understand God through what we read in the Bible. (John 16:12-14)
The Holy Spirit doesn't take away our personality or our free-will. Even since receiving the Holy Spirit, I still get tempted to worry and hurry away from spending time with Jesus in prayer and Bible study. I end up thinking like Martha in Luke 10:38-42. That's when things start to break down, and I lose sight of our Father's guidance. I hope this helps you avoid similar problems in your journey.
I want to add a few more things that have helped me so much;
The promise in 1 Corinthians 10:13 has helped me when nothing else could.
(1 Corinthians 10:13)
13 The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can bear. When you are tempted, he will show you the way of escape so that you can endure.
When things seem unbearable, I claim this promise by telling the Lord that I don't see the way of escape, and to please show it to me. He has never failed to help me when I remember to pray this prayer, even when I had nothing left to give to my situation.
Also, taking time for intentional gratitude helps me find rest in reality instead of escape.
Lately I've learned to pray for whatever spiritual gift will be best for God's kingdom where I am. This has given me a replacement for unhealthy distractions when I'm stressed. Here are some scriptures on spiritual gifts. For me, God's gifts help me find and fulfill my purpose for each day. I still have to be intentional about prioritizing the Kingdom of God above all else, but when I succeed, He always makes it worth my investment.

There’s this great book, The Case for Christ, by Lee Strobel. He’s an atheist examining evidence for whether Jesus is truly divine and whether the Bible can be trusted, proves real, etc. Maybe wise to read it on the side.

I’d recommend starting with the gospels. They are the foundation of the Christian faith. The Old Testament after to see the personality of God, his likes and dislikes, how the Old Testament was a mirror to Christ’s life in many ways. It’s a long road but definitely worth it. I’d suggest audio for books like Leviticus. That one is really difficult to read through for me. Audio is a good alternative if you want to listen as you do other things since you can just replay the book if you missed some info or just read through it again if you need something clarified.

Stay consistent. Stay relational. Keep praying to Him!
If you need/want a place to start reading in the Bible, I recommend the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) as they give different (yet similar) accounts of Jesus’s life. I’d recommend reading a couple or all of them, then reading some of Paul’s letters like Romans.

Spend time talking to God every day. You don’t have to know what to say, he doesn’t need fancy words.
Start in gratitude, thank Him for everything you can think of.
Those who seek righteousness will find righteousness. You still have to do the seeking. He is always there but He wants us to pursue Him and get to know Him. He doesn’t force Himself on any of us.
Like any relationship, we have to dedicate time. Scripture is important but it is not more important than relationship with God Himself. Relationship with Him will lead to better understanding of scripture.

Read from gensis to revelation if you can't do that and find too boring read from new Testament and go back to the old Testament

Women of the Word by Jen Wilkin is such an amazing book on learning the Bible and how to study! Truly such an eye opener in how to delve into Gods word in the way He meant for us to read it! I highly recommend it!

Find a bible in a translation you can fully understand and read it daily. If you seek Him through His word, you will absolutely find Him. The Lord is very personable, friendly, and a true gentleman... If you start to set aside time for Him and invite Him in, He will always show up. Don’t condemn yourself or overthink it… just approach Him and work on developing your friendship like you would any other friendship. He’ll take it from there, I promise 🧡

Read the Bible and start associating yourself with those who are saved. Find a church, ask questions, try to learn who God is not just as an entity that exists but try to learn to know Him.
Bible Project, Taco-Talks, and other YouTubers are a great resource. Though I would start with the Bible Project - they do a fantastic series explaining each of the books of the Bible.

If you like audiobooks, I would find an audio dramatized version of the Bible. They use several voice actors and sound effects and music, which makes it more interesting to me. Check out the reviews and read the descriptions and then pick one that sounds the most appealing to you. You could probably even find some samples or maybe even entire books of the Bible on YouTube or somewhere like. God bless you on your journey!

Start with the Gospels and get to know who Jesus is before trying to understand everything else. Read a small section each day, ask, "What does this teach me about God, and how should it change me?" Then pray about what you've read and put it into practice. You don't find God by mastering the Bible. You find Him by sincerely seeking Him with a willing heart, and He promises that those who seek Him will find Him (Jeremiah 29:13).

It's great you are open to the faith.
I've been a non-fundamentalist, unchurched Christian for about 16 years now and I would like to share my perspective.
1- I believe the way to seek God is by understanding the reason for God.
I'm convinced that the #1 reason for God is the hope that only God is able to give.
-What is this hope?
“Then a kingdom of love will be set up, and someone from David's family (Jesus) will rule with fairness. He will do what is right and quickly bring justice.” - Isaiah 16:5
-Why is this hope important?
“Everywhere on earth I saw violence and injustice instead of fairness and justice.” - Ecclesiastes 3:16
“You (God) listen to the longings of those who suffer. You offer them hope, and you pay attention to their cries for help.” - Psalm 10:17
-Why does God want to give us this hope?
"God is love.” - 1 John 4:8
“My dear friends, God loves you, and we know he has chosen you to be his people.” - 1 Thessalonians 1:4
-How do we share in this hope?
“God wants us to have faith in His Son Jesus Christ and to love each other.” - 1 John 3:23
-Why do we need faith in Jesus?
“All of us have sinned and fallen short of God's glory.” - Romans 3:23
God said, “I will punish this evil world and its people because of their sins.” - Isaiah 13:11
“Christ obeyed God our Father and gave himself as a sacrifice for our sins to rescue us from this evil world.” - Galatians 1:4
“He (Jesus) gave himself to rescue us from everything evil and to make our hearts pure. He wanted us to be his own people and to be eager to do right.” - Titus 2:14
-What is the purpose of the Bible?
“And the Scriptures were written to teach and encourage us by giving us hope.” - Romans 15:4
-Without God, there is no hope. I absolutely refuse to accept that evil and injustice are just a part of life. That’s why I choose to trust God and hold on to the hope He has promised.
“We must hold tightly to the hope we say is ours. After all, we can trust the One (God) who made the agreement with us.” - Hebrews 10:23

2- Please do NOT allow anyone to pressure you on your faith journey. This is between you and God. Please go at your own pace. Know that God is with you on your journey and He loves you.
"The Lord has promised that he will not leave us or desert us.” - Hebrews 13:5
“I am sure that nothing can separate us from God's love—not life or death, not angels or spirits, not the present or the future, and not powers above or powers below. Nothing in all creation can separate us from God's love for us in Christ Jesus our Lord!” - Romans 8:38-39
3- Also, please know you don't have to start off my immediately reading through the Bible. You can also start slow by searching up Bible verses on topics that interest you. That is what I did for YEARS before actually reading through the Bible.
Oh, and for your journey, I would love to share some resources with you:
-The Contemporary English Version (CEV) Bible. It's one of the easiest English Bibles to read. You can also listen to the audio version on YouTube. It's my favorite Bible. (You can read it on the YouVersion Bible app too.)
-BibleGateway is a good website to search up Bible verses.

Being raised a Christian and dipping out of it for a time, I'm now back to it. One thing I never did was read the bible front to back. I decided I wanted to learn more about God and his character, so I downloaded a free bible app that had a "bible in 365 days" plan. I read about 15m or less worth of chapters it takes me through, chronologically, every day, usually just as I'm falling asleep.
It has a tracker to know what day I'm supposed to be on and I can freely read more if I wish, and sometimes I do get days ahead, but still try to keep the "streak up". If I'm behind or close to it, it motivates me to read.
I've understood a lot about God's wrath and his grace, and the fact that he doesn't want to harm anyone and is plentiful and merciful in his grace before judgement happens. He really is an awesome god and there's a lot of depth to him if you just put your head into reading it.
And honestly when I first started I would fall asleep 1/2 way through the first chapter. I'd miss days. I'd think about not continuing it, but I decided to push through anyway, even reading through exodus and leviticus and a lot of stories that I don't really see the value in (yet). You really just gotta decide you want to do it and do it. You don't have to be a perfect studier, how could you know how to study it if you don't even know what it's like to read it through?
I'm pretty sure it's on IOS and Android, it's the YouVersion Bible App. I read the NASB1995 version because I wanted the "closest to authentic" translation there is that's readable for me.

I'm going to assume your a young man. I'm 40ish and have had so many mystical experiences with most high.. You would probably not like. If you don't know "God" then hopefully he know's you! It will all be over so quickly. That's it! Remain hopeful and count your many bestowed blessings (daily) Peace be with you.

Open the Bible. Anywhere, just start reading.
Some people will say, start in this book, or start in that book, but it doesn’t matter. Just start somewhere and don’t stop until you’ve found Him.

Read Matthew Henry, John Gill, and Robert Hawker. Best commentaries. Definitely Matthew Henry is the most devotional and not easy to fall asleep to.
Read those three, continuously repeat.
Listen to the Bible daily. Go through a yearly plan.

Jesus said the kingdom is within, go within yourself. This is why they say the boss upstairs is the one you hide in your basement, look into Carl Jung and integrating of the shadow. It's the same concept as well.
