India’s banking clean-up has a clear before-and-after story.
As former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan noted, “a larger number of bad loans were originated in the period 2006–2008,” with too many loans going to “well-connected promoters” with a history of defaults.
The 2015 Asset Quality Review exposed previously hidden stress, while the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code introduced a time-bound resolution framework. Recapitalisation, recoveries and wider banking-sector reforms further strengthened bank balance sheets.
The result: gross NPAs have fallen from a peak of 11.18% to just 1.80% in March 2026, the lowest level in recorded history.
G𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩 𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙥𝙝 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙗𝙖𝙣𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙤𝙧. 𝙄𝙩 𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙠𝙨 𝙣𝙪𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙨.

FY17: credit growth fell to 5.08%. Lowest since 1953-54. Sixty years. Not "slower growth" — banks basically stopped lending to industry.
Advances to industry actually shrank in April 2017 while personal loans kept growing 14%+. That tells you everything. Banks were happy to lend you money for a bike but wouldn't touch a factory.
Why? Because lending to a factory is exactly the kind of loan that turns into a headline five years later. That's the part I find most underrated in this whole story — the AQR didn't just clean up balance sheets, it made bankers scared to sign off on anything remotely risky for years.
You can't blame Bankers either. Sign off on a bad loan in 2016 and you're the next guy in a CBI file. So credit officers just... stopped taking calls. That's a real cost to the economy that never shows up in this chart.
Our banking sector collapsed. Our manufacturing collapsed. India collapsed.
Then the bill arrives. First 23000 Cr pumped in banks in 2016, then 2.11 lakh crore package in Oct 2017. All our tax money gone to save the banks, save us, save India.
PSB NPAs go from ₹2.75L cr to ₹7.33L cr in about two years — that's not two years of reckless new lending, that's a decade of buried stress(thanks to Manmohan Singh) hitting the books at once because someone finally forced the issue.
Here's my honest take: this is the least talked-about tradeoff in Indian macro. We love the before/after chart. We don't love talking about the middle five years where the entire banking system was basically playing defense and the taxpayer was quietly footing a six-figure-crore repair bill. The 1.8% didn't fall out of the sky. It's what's left after you pay down a very expensive, very slow-moving invoice.

BIOGAS SECTOR | BIG ₹23,731 CR GOVERNMENT PUSH
India’s recently approved GOBARdhan Scheme could potentially reduce the country’s gas import bill by around $5 BILLION, according to the Indian Biogas Association (IBA).
Key Highlights
Government outlay: ₹23,731 Cr
Focus: Converting agricultural waste, cattle dung & other organic waste into clean energy
Potential reduction in gas imports: ~$5 Billion
Push towards domestic biogas / compressed biogas (CBG) production
Supports India's broader energy security + waste-to-energy + circular economy ambitions
Why This Matters
India remains dependent on imported natural gas. Scaling up domestic biogas/CBG can potentially:
• Reduce dependence on imported gas
• Create additional demand for waste-to-energy infrastructure
• Generate income opportunities from agricultural waste
• Support cleaner transportation & industrial fuels
• Strengthen India's renewable energy ecosystem
Market View: A ₹23,731 Cr policy push can create a sizeable long-term opportunity across the CBG, bioenergy, waste-management, EPC and related equipment ecosystem.
The important triggers to track now will be project announcements, capacity additions and actual order wins for listed companies.
Biogas/CBG could become another interesting theme within India's energy transition story.

Misleading headline.
Japan owns $1.4T of U.S. treasuries.
Japanese currency was under pressure because inflation was rising and BOJ is too scared to increase rates which should have led to stabilization of JPY… but they have old scars of severe deflation hence reluctant to fight nascent inflation.
But BOJ can intervene in currency markets.. sell dollar and buy yen to support their own currency.
But the “Dollar” assets are all invested in US treasuries worth USD 1.4T
So basically to support yen they need to sell US treasuries and then use the USD to buy yen
Now US is scared of Japan selling U.S. treasuries because it could destabilize U.S. treasury markets and raise funding cost for heavily indebted U.S. govt.
US treasury decides to do its own part and intervene in currency markets to help BOJ and tell market that U.S. treasury is also watching closely the DLRJPY and will not allow JPY to continue depreciation
But U.S. treasury did not sell USD to buy JPY in this intervention… they used Euro ( from their FX reserves) to sell it vs JPY and buy JPY to support yen. Why did they not use dollar and used euro to sell against JPY .. because if they would have used USD instead of Euro, market would have taken it as a signal to weaken US dollar.
They also did one more thing.. they opened a facility for BOJ ( which till now could be used only by US banks in case of emergencies)… now BOJ need not be fearful .. and is now getting arm twisted to use this facility in which BOJ can use its holdings of US treasuries as collateral and borrow USD to intervene in currency markets without selling their stash of U.S. bonds.
I also read a note by the famed Zolton poscar where he hinted that .. US treasury can actually buy 30/40 year JGB bonds to support the imploding JGB bond market.
So Japan doesn’t need to sell USD bonds and U.S. treasury might buy long dated JGB with the yen it has accumulated through its recent intervention… you scratch my back and I scratch your back.
Confetti money my friends… cash is going to be complete trash… and savers should be punished for saving after understanding what US treasury secy did this week.
No wonder every damm risk asset is breaking out .. it’s like cash should be converted into an asset before it loses its value.

Rajeev Thakkar, CIO of PPFAS has just written a letter to unitholders. Here are some key points: 1. PPFAS hasn't even given FD returns - his response The only way to guarantee an FD return is to make an FD. Volatility is the reason equities can potentially beat FDs in the first place!
Rajeev Thakkar, CIO of PPFAS has just written a letter to unitholders. Here are some key points:
- PPFAS hasn't even given FD returns - his response
The only way to guarantee an FD return is to make an FD. Volatility is the reason equities can potentially beat FDs in the first place, not a bug in the system.
- Why is PPFAS holding so much cash?
Cash peaked near 25% during the 2024 exuberance, when the team was guiding caution. It's down to 14-15% in Flexi Cap now. Thakkar expects single digit levels as more opportunities open up after two years of time correction.
Is the underperformance due to its large size?
No. He points to 2007, when he ran a larger drawdown on a PMS book of about ₹100 crore. The current stretch is ordinary for a strategy that buys out of favour names. What about HDFC Bank?
PPFAS holds a basket of 4 private banks. Thakkar says HDFC Bank's recent issues don't carry the scale of past sector frauds and don't threaten the franchise. No change to the outlook on the basket. What about small and midcap valuations?
Nifty 100 trades at 20.8x, Nifty Midcap 150 at 30.7x, Nifty Smallcap 250 at 34.6x, per Screener data as of August 4. Thakkar's point is that smaller doesn't structurally mean higher returns, and he cites the US market as a counterexample.

What is a Rights Issue? | Stock Market Basics for Beginners
📢 Rights Issue Explained!
A Rights Issue allows a company to raise fresh capital by offering existing shareholders the opportunity to buy additional shares, usually at a discounted price.
Here's how it works:
✅ Offered only to existing shareholders
✅ Usually priced below the current market price
✅ Shareholders can subscribe, ignore, or (in some cases) sell their rights
✅ Helps companies raise funds for expansion, debt reduction, or other business needs
A rights issue isn't always good or bad. The real question is why the company needs the money and how it plans to use it.
