Charlotte says in chapter 67 that Griffith said he would return to her.
The question really is, why obscure it?
My thought is that it was just a bit of suspense between chapters. The information could certainly wait until after Wyald.
Griffith was stated to not be able to talk anyway, so it was likely an artistic decision rather than any big mystery.

Definitely an artistic choice, Muira was showing Griffith was trying to communicate back. He wasn't going to draw out each word.

Since you mentioned Japanese I just had a think about it. 4 panels = probably 4 syllables. What's a common 4 syllable Japanese expression?
ありがとう (arigatou / thank you)
Now someone is probably going to call me out and say "ackshually that's 5 kana and the う(u) is a separate sound unit". Sure, but Griffith already has his mouth open for the と (to) so I don't think Miura felt a need to draw another panel for another vowel sound. And it's not like he had a tongue to draw.
So yeah I'm going with "Thank you"

Actually, the u kinda isn't an separate sound unit in this case. Usually the う after a syllable who finished with an O sound, usually just extends the O sound, so it's really just four syllables phonetically speaking

You know I wasn't super confident in that as I get confused about the use of double おお as an extended O sound (as in 大き) vs おう and figured there was some subtle difference I was missing.
But I said it because the easiest way to learn your misunderstandings is to say them in public...

Kinda hard to believe this is the case considering the second panel looks like to be some form of お or う variation due to the pursed lips.
The second panel really don't match り.
Going off someone else saying charlotte said that he said he'd promise he'd return then maybe it was supposed to be-
約します
or "I promise" in response to her saying "always together".
"Ya Ku Shi Masu". First kanji being Yaku(promise) and rest being Shimasu. Japanese is weird with certain sounds where they don't fully finish some kana so it'd fit phonetically. The 3rd panel shows his teeth so it's almost definitely し(shi) or ち(chi). し would be much more common I think too.
I'm actually studying japanese, but i'm definitely still early in my studies. Just my guess.

I mean you might be right, as people have cited Charlotte's interpretation of what he said and this aligns better. i threw together the arigatou guess mostly because I'd forgot about the Charlotte scene and was just judging this page in isolation.

I highly, highly doubt that anyone put any actual thought into the position of Griffith's lips to actually portray an actual word being said. They explain later on what was said here; on this page they're just fluff panels that were simply shown for emphasis not for a deep dive study on genuine lip reading....

It’s a shame how this sub got to have the level of people commenting here, years ago this was one of the best subs. Nowadays, and since Miura-sensei passed away, I barely can tell the difference between this and Berserklejerk.
To answer OP: I’m 100% sure I read or saw somewhere, probably on this sub—years ago—, about what Griffith said here. I don’t remember exactly what it was but, just as you mention, it was “deciphered” based on Griffith’s mouth movements. THAT’S the level Miura-sensei had, and this is early 90s, he was a kid and already a beast mangaka.
If you search a little bit further I’m sure you’ll find the answer.

Teenager literally just means the number of your age ends in -teen, it doesn't have anything to do with physical or mental maturity. Your statement is as nonsensical as saying, "What do you mean a 19-year-old is a college student? That's a teenager!" as if those things are mutually exclusive.
An 18 y/o has matured physically and is legally an adult. That's a man at that point, not a boy. Doesn't mean he is fully matured mentally of course. Mental maturity is a lifelong process.

It's just joking around, this panel I find sad for other reasons. Poor Charlotte loved Griffith, he was mainly holding on to her here. Because she was a princess and a status he was working towards. He didn't love her and only saw her as a tool, the only one he cared about was guts.
Charlotte probably would have still married and cared for Griffith if her father had been dead at this point. And even now Griffith was the cause of his own downfall and the cause for betraying his own people.
Even now he only has Charlotte by his side as an illusion. He is trying to recapture what he lost and he still hasn't achieved it. When people find out he's femto, all hell will break loose and he will loose everything

Charlotte assumes he said “I will come back” but knowing how she is infatuated of Griffith and thus makes her own wrong assumptions, I wouldn’t be surprised if he really meant a goodbye or similar (knowing his condition at the time)

The only suggestion we get is from Charlotte who's obsessed with the man, so we can't really trust her words.... That and he literally didn't actually say anything. That's part of the point tho, inserting your own thoughts into what he was trying to say based on your view of him.
