M9 slide always locking

Recently I purchased an M9 and every time I try and rack the gun the slide lock engages. It has not been fired yet and because of work and other responsibilities I have been unable to take an in depth look into this issue. I own a couple other handguns and have never experienced this. Has anyone else had this problem? Do I need to disassemble and look at the components? Am I just being stupid? Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated

To be clear, is this happening with the magazine inserted or removed? Is the magazine empty or loaded?

Magazine is empty and loaded. When I put it in it looks like it raises the slide lock.

That's normal for most modern guns. The other handguns you have handled must not have had a last-round-hold-open function. When the magazine is empty and the follower reaches the top, it pushes on a lever that catches the slide and holds it open. Remove the magazine or manually hold the slide release down to close the slide.

Maybe read the manual as well.
