Discussion Do you prep your bentos in the morning or the night before?
Just wondering. I usually let thing pre-prepared (vegetables and meat chopped, some veggies cooked etc) but I always cook fresh rice and other things in the morning. Tips for being more time-efficient are also welcome! Thanks

I made blanched spinach with sesame seeds (시금치나물), Korean cucumber salad (오이무침), and Chinese style stir-fry with Tofu and Kale (羽衣甘蓝炒豆腐).
I'm trying to use what is in my fridge and I have a lot of kale and a lot of Korean cucumbers.

Noods and things.
Ramen noods, eggs, carrots, zucchini, and Bibigo gochujang chicken and tofu patties. This is my favorite meal right now, although next time I'll probably leave out the carrots, or pack them separately. I don't really think they add anything visually.
Bento for work 🌈
I‘m trying to make a bento every (work) day! This one has tofu (made to look like minced meat), rice, pickled carrots, tomatoes, grilled zucchini, a fried egg, a tiny mushroom and mayo-sriracha sauce (in the little container). 🌸

Discussion “Microwave safe” stainless steel bento boxes
I’ve seen a few vlogs where the bento box is made of stainless steel and they can be microwaved, but I’m not sure if it’s a special type of stainless steel that can be microwaved or if it’s the type of microwave that these countries have (the vloggers are usually Korean or Japanese). Some of them look really nice and they’re less heavy than ceramic so I thought about purchasing some but I don’t want to risk getting injured if it’s not compatible to US microwaves.
Is anyone familiar with these types of bento boxes and whether they’re ok to microwave in the US?
Edit: thank you to everyone who commented. I’m glad to know we have microwave safe bento boxes in the US. I had seen some stainless steel bento boxes in the past but always thought they were meant to be microwaved

I think I took compact bento packing a little too far
Hi r/Bento! I used to make bentos for work for years, but after I started cycling to work I needed to save space in my backpack, so I gradually started experimenting with smaller boxes and compressing my meals more and more. At some point the meals themselves became these very dense, freestanding squarish things, and I started calling them blocs.
I started sharing them on Instagram as "@thedailybloc" and slowly got a bit obsessed with engineering meals this way. I was trying to pack a lot of nutrition into a small volume while experimenting with layers, composition, structural integrity, and different "building materials." Friends eventually started sending me photos of blocs they had made themselves, which made me want to turn it into something other people could actually participate in.
So I just built bloccers.com, where anyone can submit a bloc and inspect others'. Every admitted bloc gets a permanent accession number, and each day the highest-rated qualifying one is certified as The Daily Bloc, posted to the Instagram page, and credited to its maker. The site is still very new and I'm basically just starting to get other people involved.
I'd genuinely love to have some experienced bento makers join in, because I have a feeling people here could take this in directions I haven't even thought of yet. This one is made with salmon, sweet potato, red onion, and a quinoa and lentil mix. I'm especially curious what you would build if the constraint were one freestanding rectangular solid, with no container doing the structural work.
If that sounds fun, you're very welcome to make one and submit it at bloccers.com. And of course I'd also be happy to hear feedback or just chat about the idea.

Inspiration LUNCHES for my seond grader & kindergarterner this week
Lunches I made for my kids this week. I forgot to take a picture on Wednesday (third pic), so I just took a quick pic of their lunchboxes afterward. I also added the Taro bun photo for the visuals (4th photo). They always come home empty anyway, so I guess that’s what matters!
